Yes, I believe you can safely use a barrel from a regular 870 Express ( or a Wingmaster for that matter) on a Supermag reciever. Rather than do it on MY say-so, please confirm that with the manufacturer or a gunsmith before you do it.
-
For what purpose are you seeking a cantilever barrel for your 870 ? If you want it for a slug gun, the 3.5" supermag is not necessary. Do they even MAKE 3.5 " slugs..??.. Jeeze, I hope not..I'd hate to SHOOT one...<<grin>>.. If that's what you want it for, I suspect a regular 3" or 2 3/4" 870 barrel would work on your supermag receiver. Just a thought..

I don't know if they are available or not, Jimbo. If you can't find one, there is always the option of buying an aftermarket cantilever that will attach to the rib on your vent rib barrel. I used one for my 11-87 for awhile when I was using a Bushnell Holosight for turkey hunting. I got mine from B-Square Inc. It came complete with scope rings and could be bought for several different vent rib widths.

Don't overlook the obvious..Make sure that all screws are tight. After that, try a couple of different sabot slugs. If it is an ammo issue, you should see an improvement or at least a change. Be realistic in your expectations. A 3 or 4 inch group at 100 yards is pretty good accuracy for any shotgun and is perfectly acceptable hunting accuracy, IMHO. A pump shotgun is a hunting tool, not a benchrest rig. There are SO many options available today , that you can spend a good deal of cash just trying different slugs. My rifled slug barrel never cared for the Remington copper solids, giving mediocre accuracy at best. Many hunters report excellent accuracy with them, however. Every gun is an individual. I have never tried many of the more recent slug loads, because my gun shot very well with Win BRI standard velocity sabots.. Since they legalized rifles in my area I haven't used my slug gun, and probably won't since I prefer to use a rifle and my own handloads. Good luck and keep us posted.

Lasso deer..... Tie deer to tree..... Force deer to watch re-runs of "Leave it to Beaver" until it dies of boredom, WITHOUT falling asleep yourself.

Your M70 was manufactured in 1969 or 1970...

I got my usual lump of coal... That's what I've been getting EVERY year since I accidently shot Rudolph on one of my caribou hunts. Of course, considering the cost of fossil feuls these days, there could be WORSE things to find in my stocking...

Lawdwaz...Glad to hear I'm not the only one who dislikes detachable mags. <<grin>>. Having SAID that, my M7mm08 Rem Mountain rifle has one... I would have much preferred a hinged floorplate, but it was not available in that model, and I took a liking to the looks and feel of the Mountain Rifle. Sometimes one must compromise...

Howdy, Ken...My daughter and SIL live in Norfolk...She's a school librarian and he is an IT type employed by SUNY Potsdam. Not to be nit-picky, but I think you have your year wrong for the Ruger M77...I believe that model was INTRODUCED in the mid to late 1960s. The only centerfires that Ruger was making in 1953 were single action revolvers.

LOL all you want, Doc... Some of us still choose to support our basic freedoms... There aren't a whole lot of them left...

Good luck and thanks for your service to our country. I have 2 stepgrandkids serving..One just returned from Iraq and the other from Kyrgistan. lawdwaz gives good advice on the short action chambering.. The 7mm08 is well established, sweet shooting and capable of killing deer at any reasonable distance. So is the 260 Rem, except it's not as mainstream as the 7mm08.. Consider that BOTH rounds developed thier popularity by knocking over steel rams at 500 yards in metallic sillouette competion.

Nice new toy buckboy....Looks like a COYOTE KILLER extrordinaire... I like the Win-Tuff laminate stocks..My M70 lightweight .280 has one. They have the beauty and feel of wood, but are nearly as inert as a synthetic. HAVE FUN....

What Culver and Lawdwaz said... I always used regular rifle scopes on my shotguns. So have nearly all of my hunting buddies. Just be sure to get one with sufficient eye relief. It just so happens that the scopes I've used on my shotguns have been lower powered, El Paso Weavers, but there are many other good options out there. I have a 1.5 X 4 x 20 Leupold in my gun room that would be a sweet scope for a slug gun.

So you're considering buying the gun with 3 barrels...?? I think you are overcomplicating things, Rev... In the first place, I don't think the Supermag is necessary. In many cases 3.5 inch loads are overkill. I have never been in a turkey hunting or waterfowl hunting situation where 2 3/4 or 3 " shells didn't get the job done at any reasonable range. My suggestion would be to buy a standard, 3" 11-87 with a 26" choke tube barrel. That would serve you well for turkeys, waterfowl and small game. Then if you desire, buy a rifled slug barrel for deer.

Tentatively,, I'm planning a hog hunting trip on a friend's lease in Souteastern Georgia. Bunny hunting with a retired friend and his beagles. As long as the weather stays reasonable, there is a wonderful open water winter fishery on Keuka, Seneca and Cayuga lakes. Last year we had so much snow that I couldn't get my boat out of my backyard. I have my fingers crossed that this year will be better. Steelhead fishing on the Lake Eie tribs can be great, once again depending on the weather. The walleyes are biting well right now in the Chemung River system, including the Canisteo and Tioga River. Did I mention that I like to fish ?

Oh come ON, Boys and Girls...!!.. We're not done flogging this expired equine YET are we ?? I just cracked open a Genny Light and got a big bowl of POPCORN.....LOL...

Skillet...I had a BSA Sweet 17 on my 17 HMR also....It wasn't a GREAT scope optically, compared to my Leupolds, but it wasn't a BAD scope considering the $$. It worked fine for what I used it for, a squirrel rifle. I suspect it would serve you well for your .22.. Now if it were for a big game rifle that might get rough use in bad weather conditions, I'd say go with better quality, for dependability. I doubt that you will be using your .22 in the wildnerness in a monsoon, however..<grin>...

I decided on half of my next toy
Pygmy replied to Suilleabhain's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Good luck, Sully....I have a young friend who does some hobby gunsmithing. He has made up several older mausers with Mannlicher stocks, and they look cool and shoot well. He's done 8 x 57s, 7 x57s and 6.5 x55s. Presently he's doing a 9.3 x 62 and talking about doing a 9.3 x 57 for a nice woods carbine for deer & black bear. I'll ask him if he knows the location of a decent candidate for a full stocked Swede.. -

Hmmmm... The issue Arisakas were nearly full stocked anyway, as were most bolt action battle rifles of that era... The 6.5 Swede is an excellent choice, as is the CZ 550 FS. I have a CZ 550 American in 9.3 x 62, and it is a sub MOA shooter. The 550 FS would be an excellent hunting rifle.. Good luck. -
CONGRATS, Dave..!!... Great news...!!.. My first grandchild is due in February..!!.. I am happy for you..
-
Jennifer... An old guy (long since departed) who lived near my boyhood home told me that he ate red squirrels on a regular basis and they were as good as greys, only smaller.. Surprisingly, I never ate one, although I've eaten woodchuck, beaver, coon, snapping turtle, barn pigeon and some other weird stuff...

I LOVE hare hunting..I just never found a way to cook the critters so they TASTE good..

A doe that dressed 168...?? Amazing...In 45 years of hunting I have seen less than a dozen bucks that dressed that heavy..Awesome doe.. Generally, here in the southern tier, where we have plenty of dmps and guys get to cull the bigger does, a doe that dresses 120 or 130 is a pretty big doe. I'd guess the average 1.5 year old doe dresses out around 100.

Kwazy WABBITS...Hehehehehe... I have a good buddy ( also retired) who has two good beagles.. I'm looking forward to hunting with him this winter.
