Welcome, Jerry....I'm just over the hill from you in Addison...I lived on the Cranberry Lake Rd. for 35 years, but now I'm right in beautiful, downtown Addison. I frequent The Campbell Legion ..We probably have some mutual aquaintances. I've lived in the area all my life and I know quite a few people from Campbell, Thurston, etc. Let me know if you want to stop by the legion sometime and chat face to face..

Thanks, Biz-R.. I have a friend who has his guide's license in NB. I took a bull hunting with him in 2004, the only time I drew a tag up there. I appreciate the info, however..

Damn hard to beat the .223... There are other chamberings that might work as well, but few that work better, as WNY says, the ammo issue favors the .223.. A friend of mine from Ontario uses a 22-250 in Browning BLR and has killed a bunch of coyotes with it, but that ain't to say he would not as killed just as many with a .223..

I'm about to apply for my NB moose tag. Odds of drawing are significantly better than any US drawing ( except AK, which is mostly OTC). Quebec and Ontario have tags available, but success rates are much lower than NB. A guide or outfitter IS required for non-residents in NB, but rates are reasonable and harvest rates are fairly high compared to Quebec or Ontario.

Anyone ever have to use your pistol in a real life situation?
Pygmy replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in General Chit Chat
Nope..Never been shot at or directly threatened with a firearm.. However, I have been threatened with a knife, and consider myself lucky that I was not injured...I very well might have been injured or killed if a patrol car from Brooklyn's finest did not come down the street while this was taking place. This took place outside the Brooklyn Naval Yard in 1971. I made a vow after that, that if I ever NEEDED a firearm again, I would HAVE one. That's one reason I will not return to NYC..If I can't pack a pistol, I ain't GOING there.. -
Skillet...Your recipe is similar to mine... Here's the way I do it...Works great for rabbit also.. I always skin and disjoint them right in the woods.. Shake squirrel pieces in flour seasoned with salt, coarse black pepper and poultry seasoning.. Brown in a skillet in butter and olive oil ( this helps to make the seasoning stick to the meat). Place meat in a roaster ( I use disposable aluminum roasting pans). Slice up an onion over meat. Add liquid...I have used beer, wine, and chicken, turkey or beef broth. All are good according to your taste, but my favorite is chicken broth (canned or box). Cover roaster and place in very slow ( 280-300 degree) oven until meat is fork tender...usually 2-3 hours. Remove cover, raise temp to 400 and roast until meat is nicely browned and liquid is reduced.. Make gravy from pan drippings and serve over rice or taters. YUM..!! I have a roaster full in the oven as I type this, with a rabbit and four squirrels...I am salivating just smelling it..<<big GRIN>>...

Welcome to the forum, allblue.. I have a soft spot in my heart for blueticks. My Dad was a coon hunter and his alltime best hound was a bluetick.. Elmo...Without hounds/dogs, coon hunting is pretty much a hit and miss situation. I have spent many, many hours in the woods at dawn and dusk, between hunting turkeys, deer , small game and waterfowl and while it is not unusual to see an occasional coon, it would be difficult to be consistently successful without some canine assistance. There are coon calls on the market, and now and then I have read about hunters calling them, but I personally don't know anyone who has ever killed many coons on a consistent basis without using hounds or steel traps..

It depends on WHAT 7MM you are considering... The 7mm-08 has fairly light recoil, but handles heavier bullets than the .243. It is in my opinion close to being an ideal whitetail rifle. Easy to shoot, but capable of 300 yard + performance. The 7mm Magnums are capable also, but you pay for it with much more muzzle blast and recoil, plus a longer and heavier rifle in most cases.

I wasn't suggesting that 460 grain conicals were necessary to kill deer. Actually, most of my ML deer ( including my biggest EVER buck) were killed with 180 grain PRB's and around 90 grains of pyrodex 2F. Back in 2004, I had a ML elk hunt scheduled and wanted to work up a good elk load. 50 Cal. round balls are a little light for elk. I settled on the 460 NE and it shot so well and loaded so easy, I decided to use it for deer, also..Not surprisingly, it kills them as well as it did the elk I shot with it. I use 80 grains of 3F 777 loose powder. PRBs should work fine in your rifle. I would suggest using loose Pyrodex, black powder or 777.. Lyman Great Plains bullets are another good alternative,as are the TC maxiballs or maxi hunters.. Depends on what your rifle likes...

Very cool... Just an educated guess, but is your 32-20 a M 92 ?... Rifle or carbine ? I was once in possession of a M92 takedown rifle in 32-20. It had belonged to my ex-wife's father and was originally owned by a fellow here in Steuben County who commited a double murder back in the 1920s. It was not in good shooting condition.. It had a broken stock at the wrist ( repaired with wood screws and black tape) and had several fairly crude carvings on both buttstock and forend.. The sear was worn badly and it was not safe to cycle the action while loaded.. Still, it was quite an hierloom.. When my ex-wife and I separated, I gave it to a nephew, because it was a hand down from his grandfather and I did not feel right that I should keep it, not being blood relation.

Your Hawken has a 1-48" twist. It will probably shoot very well with patched round balls. That twist was chosen by TC because it also will shoot well with TC Maxi balls.. It is kind of a compromise..Should shoot either round balls or conicals with acceptable accuracy. My advice would be to try the Noexuses 460 grain conical. It shoots GREAT in my 1973 TC Hawken. Shoots flat enough for 100 yard shots and simply flattens anything you hit with it. It is very accurate in my rifle and loads easy to boot..

Welcome to the sport... I live in western NY, so I can't help with hunting spots in your area.. However, as far as choosing between a .308 and a 30-06 for deer hunting, flip a coin.. One is as good as the other, and any deer you shoot with either chambering will never know the difference. The .308 , due to its short action chambering, is available in somewhat shorter and lighter rifles than the standard length 30-06. Other than that, it's a WASH. There are many factory loads available for both...

Is your rifle an original or a repro...??... Not that it matters for hunting, because either the original Winchester or the Browning repro would be a quality firearm.. If you shoot it much, you might consider getting into reloading, or perhaps having a friend reload for you. That would cut your ammo cost by as much as 75%, if you have your own brass..

Coyotes wouldn't likely be running in packs this time of the year.. They are not true PACK animals, like wolves... The groups that you hear howling together are family groups, not true packs.. And they are starting to mate this time of the year.. Groups of more than TWO would not be that common.. Call the DEC and talk to someone who knows something about coyote behavior and ask thier opinion. Sounds like you have a domestic ( or feral) DOG problem... Once again, I offer my deepest regrets and sympathy for the loss of your pets..
-
Sounds more like dogs to me... Coyotes are more interested in eating...Dogs are much more likely just to kill for sport.. Coyotes might come over a fence or dig under it, but if the fence is busted I would say that dogs are more likely the culprits.

I weigh every charge on an old fashioned beam balance powder scale. Mine is a Herter's that I bought in the early 1970s when I first got into reloading. My reloading volume is low..Seldom do I load more than 40 rounds at a sitting, and often it is less than that, so I don't mind the extra time it takes me to weigh every charge, and I am confident that every charge is accurate.. I bought a powder measure years ago and never use it. If I were loading high volume, like pistol ammo,it would be different.
