  1. definitely a partially educated loner and a racist murderer who avoided integration into society at all. Instead looked at materials that espoused hatred of other races and cultures. Wait - is he a Manson child?
  2. i have stomped out small grass fires from idiots playing with fireworks in the dry grassy field by an airport - figure should do what I can since the fire dept was putting on the real show in town 2-3 miles away. I have had people 3-4 cars away in a parking lot set off fireworks between cars. All of that was in a state that bans fireworks - period. My sister has witnessed people lighting some and tossing them under cars. I have seen people give lit sparklers to 4 year-olds. There are a lot of idiots that just don't know how dangerous the stuff can be - third degree burns requiring grafts, hands blow off, people blinded, loss of hearing, etc.
  3. One daughter of mine is very ticklish, so she comes with a built-in alert system. Just no where near dating age... yet. Since she was at least nine, she has figured out guy's weak points to hit. She is loud a lot so if she's quiet, something maybe up. She is like a human GPS. Been there once, she can get you back there again - so if someone tries to divert where they are going, she will know when it is not right very quickly and say something. To bad my son is graduating this year, otherwise he would be looking out for the soon to be freshman next year. She is not into the social media thing at all. She uses a tablet (Kindle) for reading, candy crush, and Pinterest for project ideas - otherwise not a computer fan (usually has the school computer crash on her and loses her work). She can be tough - played a little lacrosse against her brother for fun (with pads ,etc) boys style. She tried the girls version, didn't like it - no contact and no pads (especially helmets). Team members were not following the rules and she took two hits to the head as a result with the lacrosse ball. The getting hit in the head without anything other than a pair a goggles really turned her off. She and her brother use to bash each others sticks and arm pads to knock the ball free from each other, so she was not wimping out. Having balls flying at your face without protection is not fun (like playing catcher without a face mask and helmet). They both can dish out some pain if they have too. I do have software that I can install on a Windows or Mac PC from the police dept to monitor things if need be. They may still give it out for free if you ask for a copy to monitor your kids computer usage. Once they are out of the house, it will be harder to not worry about them. Establish a particular time and day(s) to check in with each other until you are both comfortable with perhaps just a Sunday evening phone call later on. We did this last year with my son spending 6-7 weeks at Harvard taking classes last summer. He had to let us know if was going off-campus, where that place was, and when he would most-likely get back (suburb kid in a city taking subway from Harvard to Boston for concerts and shows for the first time). We had plenty worry about with him away - his food allergies, taking public transportation for the first-time, advocating for himself (has learning disability), and his lack of sense of direction(gets lost). We will be more relaxed this Fall for him as he has had 5 campus visits already and he will have an on-campus internship in July to learn the campus and area better. He will be taking the train to campus as it is only a part-time gig. He already has experienced some college-life as attending college in the summer while a high school student (and has 8 Harvard credits to show for it - 4 in theoretical physics). He did take part in campus events there (movie, semi-formal dance, etc), and use resources as need (tutor for complex calculus equations, campus security for lost keys). He will also be closer to home 1.5-2 hours vs 6-7 hours if something came up, or come home for the holidays.
  4. You have more options if you go with the a shotgun, and better chance if they are not sitting still (although you have longer range with a .22 or .17 caliber rifle). For rabbit/squirrel, you can go from the lowly .410 up to a 12 gauge. A 20, 16, or 12 gauge would give you more hunting options - pheasant/geese/ducks/deer/bear just by using a different shot shell or rifled slugs.
  5. put in a couple of those tiny house that are constructed on trailers designed for off-grid use, put in a hand-pump well and you have yourself a camp. The tiny houses could be removed easily if it need to be done.
  6. Next year I will have a girl in high school, but she is currently not interested in boys. She is smart, quiet, and likes to read (some of it is college level). She doesn't like to dumb anything down, so at least is they should be intelligent decent guy(or at least I hope so). She does like to go for walks/runs and is stronger than she looks. My son is not allowed to have parties, We have had a few gaming sessions of a couple of friends and a couple social events at the house for the stage crew. They had music, games, snacks, and made s'mores over the fire-pit. We circulated every so often, "check" to see if there were enough snacks, need to replenish the ice, another bottle of soda or water. Never more than a room away. If someone left the gathering from the social event, they were not allowed back (remove chances of slipping away for drug or alcohol use). No one was allowed in any bedrooms. Limited everyone to the living room, dining room, kitchen or the deck. Same rules apply for any friends coming over (exception being helping to carry out all the scenery for any War Hammer gaming sessions). If people get to close, some times even our dog will intervene.
  7. Their heart is in the right to protect kids, but kids need to taught to not touch any firearm and assume that it is loaded too. Willing to bet most of the incidents were involving handguns and not long guns. They will probably screw up the way it is written and the first responders (police, sheriiff's dept, etc) will not be exempted with regards to their service weapon. If I lived anywhere that jailbreak, I would probably keep something unlocked and available for quick use and a couple rounds for it stashed nearby. I happen to have a LEO and a judge for neighbors, if something does occur, it is a quick response on my block.
  8. Nice looking animal. Guess it stayed warm by the radiator. Bet it was a bit lost when it was freed. Not sure I would have shot it where is was - you got the radiator, AC coils there, perhaps transmission cooler too. Then there is the possible ricochet from the road surface. If had a dart gun to tranquilize, it yes.
  9. The most deer I have seen together in season was three. They were running through a thin strip of woods on public land next to a county road, right behind a post office. All I got sight of was three tails. You don't see herds of deer on huntable public lands by me. Perhaps on some farmer's private property, but not on the public hunting-allowed lands. The last time I saw a herd of 20 or more deer, was probably 1989 in Maryland on private land bordering a scout camp on one side and swamp land along a navigable creek on the other, and perhaps that many in a large meadow in Shenandoah National Park 8 years ago.

How UC's were they trying to extract and using this as a cover for their "arrests" by making a mass arrest?
  11. Another place to go and they do link up to AT as well is Stering Forest. The NY-NJ Trail Conference makes those maps too. You can hike in Sterling, pick up the AT to access Harriman/Bear Mountain. Both Sterling and Harriman have old abandoned mines, lakes, streams, and wetlands. The views from the tower on Bear Mountain are great on a clear day (view both sides of the hudson and see parts of NJ too). You can order the maps on line for either/both, pick them up at the Bear Mountain book store (south of the long meadow circle in the center median), or the gift shop in the Sterling Forest visitor center. If you need gear and head into NJ, Campmor has some of the maps too. I know one the NY-NJ conference guys that worked on the more recent editions of the maps. The made a bunch of corrections using a GPS. The iron deposits greatly affected the compass readings when the older maps were done. So the old maps may say you head south and compass read on the trail is the same way, but the Sun and GPS would indicate going east when by the old iron mines. If you want additional fun, there are GPS and letterbox caches in Harriman. I have found couple also at Stewart while hunting. The stacked rocks into a boxy shape with something shiny under them just didn't look right. So i found caches without any clues, but clues are easier.
  12. Are we sure its not some new trend for the mob. Are they using deer heads instead of horse heads these days, and he was their source?
  13. Online is only part-one to getting your basic hunter safety permit, most still go to a day class for the exam and filed test. By sitting through the classes, you also get some real world tips, examples, and demos at each session. My daughter took hers this spring in Sullivan Co.. They had 4 firearms on hand (breach, bolt, pump, and a demo pistol [non-firing]) to show different actions and go through with each student the handling proceedures. They even had a "field" walk carrying practice in her class (3-person group carrying down a wood road making turns and navigating trees, bushes, and a ditch safely). Last day had lot of daylight left and the instructor had ammo to do some shooting, so they got to shoot .22's, .410, and 20 gauge at stationary targets and practice their safey skills when handling and loading. That also provided a demo of what a 22 and 20 gauges can do when they imapct a target to drive home the importantance of safe handling and knowing what is beyond your target. That was great for the total newbies (never been out with hunting friend/relative, let alone fire a gun at a target) like couple city people, as in NYC residents, that were in the class. Those people were also instructed to file permit for having a firearm in NYC since this was all new to them and did not know that there are also local firearm laws that have to be followed.
  14. Funny thing, I was talking about needing ID for everything earlier today, even credit cards you could be asked for ID when using them. College campus buildings at some colleges require showing ID (or swiping it at a scanner to open the door) to get in the building. I am not talking dorms here, I am referring to buildings for classes, particularly ones that have labs (science and engineering). Verizon asks for ID in the stores to sign-in for support when dealing with billing or account changes. DEC asks for ID when doing hunting/fishing license checks. ID to get on a plane. Schools can ask for (or demand) ID before releasing your child to you. Want to vote, step right up here to get your ballot. All have to do sometimes is to give last name and say there I am, 3rd one down.
  15. How about The Band (Up on Cripple Creek and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down ) The Guess Who (American Woman), Neil Young, and Loverboy Actresses Evangeline Lilly and A.J. Cook Actors Rick Moranis, Martin Short, Mike Meyers, Michael J Fox Anyone got a bottle of MooseHead beer around?
  16. Hope the psychologist crap gets dropped. People go to one for all kinds of reasons: kids that are targets of bullies to rebuild self-esteem kids that need help with some social skills like reading people (aspbergers syndrome) eating disorders (self-perception of being too fat/skinny) stress behavoir-modification (nervous tick, OCD, etc) None those are threat to society.
  17. How about making a requirement to hold a public office, they must carry a $10 million liability policy. They screw-up, therefore must pay up. I got another idea, propose at all Democratic leaders (state/federal level including President) are banned from being protected by armed guards (police, military, or otherwise). If the citizens in this country can't have a firearm even though it is in our Bill of Rights to have one, then they don't need protection by one either. It's like saying stealing a hammer and killing somebody with it makes the original owner of the hammer the responsible party. (or other commonly used items of murder [knife, screw driver, bat, pipe, etc]) It's not like guns ever get stolen from a police car either. ... wait didn't Tommy Lee from Motley Crew do that once after stealing the police car for a joyride.
  18. Forgot to take pics of the hens - hindsight. Picked up my hen decoy and some stalking. The lower field about a 1/4 mile away by the swamp had been plowed. Gotcready to try calling when a tom gobbled. Couldn't get him to come in from the woods. Circle around to the swamp and he still wouldn't budge. A bunch teens came through the area very loud and the bird shut up and vanished. Heading back out saw odd looking rock or tree root. When got closer. Saw it was a large turtle with lots of bugs swimming around it. When to poke it with the barrel to it it was dead and snapped right onto my gun. Definitely a large live snapping turtle. Got pic of him on my camera. Have work the rest of the week,so I know where I plan to start out on Saturday first thing.
  19. Called in two hens as 8. Got them to come 110 yards across the field so they ended up 30 yards away. Hope to have stick and call in a Tom, but they moved off. I moved to the other end where they took a dust bath and more shade for me,
  20. I am not a snake or spider fan. Not deathly afraid, but certain species I will give a wide berth too. Black Widow spiders I snuff out. Had a childhood friend spend a couple days in the hospital after a Black Window bite. Daddy long leg spiders I do play with and let them crawl over my hands and arms. Daughter is freaked about me playing with them, but then again she doesn't like any spiders of any kind or size. Gets interesting when we go camping sometimes. Growing up I had to watch for copperheads and cottonmouths, and I have backpacked in rattler country, so I steer clear from anything with a pattern on it.
  21. Colder than I expected this morning in Sterling Forest despite the late start. Wore my insulated jacket and had to add thermal hat while sitting listening to the creaking trees, crows, and a few other birds. Last four times out in that parcel there was a gobbler that just would not come in or show himself. Set up closer to where he seemed to be last time, but heard nothing from him. Maybe too windy or perhaps he has moved on.
  22. Turkey hunting, finish putting in the garden, and some R&R. Not sure if any of the in-laws are BBQ-ing, Will probably end up at one of B-in-Law house's at some point, since wife's grandma is in town at one of their homes. Never forget what he holiday is about. If you know of a veteran's grave, leave flowers or flag there to honor them for their service. Or do something for a family who lost someone in the most recent conflicts. I am sure they would appreciate it.
  23. Sawyers has worked well for me so far for past couple years that I have used it. Once last year had a tick crawling on at the end of the season when Sawyers would be pretty-much wearing off and had washed that layer a couple times (got hot and sweated up the outer-layers too when hiking out). Noticed that it didn't quite keep the mosquitoes out of my face. This year, spraying a fresh dose of Deet on hat and around neck seems to help. Just have to keep hands covered with gloves or they target them for a meal. Don't think I will try garlic thing, bad for at work and will have to beat the wife off with a stick (she's Italian and likes garlic) lol
  24. If they really wanted to reduce the does, why charge for doe tags (besides the money/greed aspect)? Or wouldn't make more sense to hand out the doe tags and make the buck tags be in the lottery? That would force more people to hunt the does. Or something like West Point's restrictions, you must take a doe before harvesting a buck? But you guys have had it good. Seasons were very different where I grew up, plus no Sunday hunting to boot. No rifles allowed in 3/4 of the state except 22's for squirrel and groundhogs/woodchucks. Oct. archery only 1 week Nov. gun either sex (Saturday to Saturday) rest of Nov archery/primitive weapon (ie. black powder) 1.5 weeks in Dec. gun antler-less only 1 week in January gun season antler-less There was no small game/migratory bird seasons during gun deer season. So no shooting annoying squirrels while deer hunting. If found afield with anything other than slugs or 00 Buckshot during deer gun season, you were fined at a minimum, or could face more serious penalties. So, twenty years ago where I grew up, you had only 7 days to harvest a buck in gun season and max out at two deer total for the year. You guys have had it good and didn't really know it. Not saying don't fight potential bad game laws or season changes. Just realize that at some places it is a lot worse that what you have now and they are just trying to keep the deer population at good levels without bringing in Pro's to do it.
  25. If you have an Office 365 subscription, you can also go to an Android based tablet or a Chromebook laptop. You can pick up a 10" tablet for less than Surface tablet. Note that at the moment, Office 365 for Android works only on non-Intel processors, so you would to check the specs before you buy.
