Penny for your thoughts
Two Track replied to scolopaxmatt's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Thank god this was not a batch of brain-washed kids and some are confident enough to speak up. This proposed legslation is almost like saying someone stole your car and killed somebody with it - now you go to prison. Unless everyone is locked up in a padded cell wearing a straight jacket, you just can't keep everyone safe from everything. Not saying you shouldn't properly and safely store your firearms to keep away from mentally unstable and small children. But you should still be able to keep something handy in an emergency. If they arleady broke in the door, the police will not be there fast enough to help you, neither will having to unlock two different locks to access a firearm and ammo to protect yourself. -
Those who claim they are against eating any living thing need to starve to death, as they are complete hypocrates. You have heard the type before - "I won't put anything in my mouth that was once alive." Plants are living things too - we constantly eat their babies (fruits, vegatables, and grains are all harvested from their parent plant and consumed). So maybe we should start referring to the vegans as the exclusive baby-eaters. Protect the plants - eat more meat! If your personal beliefs don't match with where you are employeed, then you should work elsewhere or suck it up and do your job that you are paid for without harrassing customers or fellow employees.

If re-incarnation existed it would really suck to have been a fisherman and come back as a worm.

3 walking around the parking lot at the office. Two are Toms. They know they are safe here from hunting here - housing developement across the street and the Thruway on the otherside. They have chased people in the parking lot and hung around the front door of the building, so there are coyote decoys set up to try to persuade them to move elsewhere.

Sweet Old Bill, Did you mean Stewart Buffer lands or the actual airport? I know a few persons on this thread do go to Stewart buffer lands. Not sure how many vehicles can fit in the main lot for the Stewart buffer lands. Never counted the spots when headed in for a turkey hunt. I guess we would need to get approximate numbers to see if fit everybody in there. Would we set 1 date rain or shine, or also back up date in case of foul weather (like thunder storms)?

Safe act confusion
Two Track replied to Borngeechee's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Gee, don't the military have more training than the Police. By Cuomo's logic if it extended to miliatary personnel, someone that uses a SAW on active duty therefore should be able to own one for personal use and keep it after retiring from Acive Duty Military service. Miltilary personal have to take the same pistol classes and register their pistols and anything the Safe Act made illegal by how it looks like the rest of us. What about someone that was not a Police field officer, mainly had desk duty and very little range time - they are exempt by association, not actual skill. We know Police officers (or retired ones) never have a mental break down, kill their kids and then commit suicide - like what what happen a fews ago in Westchester county. They should have to go through the same process we do. Police officers are supposed to be well trained. So, why do they need more than 3 shots for a personally owned gun let alone 7. They should not be exempt on personal firearms. -
Probably hard to find out since they did away with the Deer check station at Sterling. One hunter I talked with in Sterling said his buddies got 4-5 out Sterling close to Harriman (the village). He had 0 at that point. I had a chance at a yearling doe (very small) on top of a ridge (same one I was standing on at the time) that overlooked a county road, and some houses (which was the direction the shot would have gone). This was just south of Indian Hill. Bears went through two of the areas I set up in this year. At least one was a cub. They may have messed up my deer hunt for those two spots.

Democrats Reload On Ammo Ban
Two Track replied to Mr VJP's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Thank Bllomberg and Mom's against guns for this mess that elected these people into office. If you have the tools and time, any rifle caliber could have a pistol made to fire it. If I lived in brown bear/grizzly country, I would want a pistol that packs a real punch to carry when a long rifle is not practical. The typlcal police officer does not carry anything to drop a bear, or even kill a deer in my area (5 shots with a 9 mil to finish off a deer that was hit by a car). So you have to be able protect your self and family. Congress to trying to take away that constitutional right to be able to do so. They may not see it that way, but they are making it safer for the gang's and other criminals to continue violating everyone else's rights. -
The plan is to take my daughter out, but haven't ben able to get her into a class nearby. She does have after-school stuff she is involved in, which doesn't help in scheduling. This wil be her first year to go out hunting. She helped skin and clean squirrels, so there is no gross factor, just have to see the patience and quietness come out hopefully.

that sound more comfortable than sticking the other ones on the underside of your socks. If find you some place or online shop that carries them again, let us know.

I buy Hot Hands and am just finishing up Wicked warmers by LL Bean that I got as a gift. Prefer the Hot Hands, they last a bit longer, especially the foot warmers. It really sucks to change foot warmers in the cold and snow, so I stick to Hot Hands Toe Warmers for those. Somewhere is my grandfather's Zippo hand warmer. Wanted to try it out this past year, so i picked up fuel for it but couldn't find it. Guess it drifted back to my parents house on a trip for my son to hunt with his grandfather on private land. I always toss some into a emergency bag and a couple in the glove box for the unexpected need.

Growing up, we used a portable blind on skids the we could drag to change position. It was a heavy one. Wooden sides of 1/2 in plywood and partial slanted roof all covered with corn stalks. Even had a locking door on on it. For decoy's the five us carried sets of silhouettes, about 14-16 each on rubber bungee straps so could carry gun at the same time. The geese did come in consistently with the blind out there, but only after it was too dark to shoot. They circled around and wait for us to load the truck up to go home. Birds never committed for us, even when using calls. They seem to know if there was a truck or car parked on the field edge by the road, someone was out there. Didn't matter if we used a pickup or a station wagon (they were different colors too), vehicle there, no landing. I would suggest parking in a spot that is harder to spot from the air, to reduce chances of being spotted.

'net' neutrality

Remember the "free" digital signal to replace the old analog signal. Initial phase of it I could receive the broadcasts. Then FCC decided that stations could use a lower minimum power output to broadcast a couple months later. Now no free digital signal by me. Town signed another exclusive 10 year contact with the cable company, blocking out Verizon FIOS again. Nice job the government did for us. Force to pay cable company to have TV and a stable internet connection. DSL is unreliable in my area. Can't get basic package and just HBO added on, has to be a movie channel package that includes HBO. cable has blocked recording anything in standard definition so can't have as many shows recorded. Can't watch something on the DVR if cable connection is out. If it is saved to my cable DVR box's hard drive, why does the cable connection need to be live? We just get screwed by government and big companies. One seems to always bribe to the other to get their way. Guess people don't matter to either one. -

Sounds like a good way to trade info on different areas (not saying give up your best spot), skills/methods, or find a hunting buddy. Week day evenings are pretty much out for me. Are you thinking something like a restaurant/bar in the evening sometime? If had to wait until May, I suggest a large public tract after a morning turkey hunt. Do a lunch or snacks and the like before heading home as another idea.

10, guess I am getting old ? But to clarify, there are a few things that could have gone the other way: used my uncle's Kodak Brownie box camera when I first learn how to take photo's had milk and eggs delivered to my house recently as 7 years ago from a local farm listened to some of my dad's old records from the 50's & 60's which included a couple 78"s, like Davy Crockett truck stop/Travel plaza in Carilse PA still had mini-juke boxes at their tables in the late 80's and saw some at a Johnny Rocket's diner recently Still had that lovely TV test patterns in the early 90"s at my parents (no cable service by them, and only three local stations via antenna when satellite service is down) My grandmother still had some ice trays with the metal lever release 20 years ago been to a few flea markets and antique shops with the wash tub ringer for sale Anybody drive a crank-start tractor? There were two of them on the college research farm that I worked on for a summer job. Used them to haul irrigation pipe and fertilize a small test plot in the 90's. At least they had a push-button start so I didn't have to crank it. One was a Super 8 and the other was a Farmall Cub.

Buying ammo in Vermont
Two Track replied to grampy's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
All I know is my dad got asked when he purchased 22 ammo this fall for his 22 bolt-action he uses for groundhogs at his friend's farm. I wasn't there. He mentioned it to me on one of our phone conversations. They may have stricter laws regarding ammo that may be used for pistols where he lives these days. We hunted with shotguns growing up and dad had his 22 since before I was born. Don't recall him purchasing ammo for it while I was growing up and last time I saw him hunt with it I was in elementary school and he took with him to hunt in PA when i was in 5th or sixth grade. I have not lived in that state for over twenty years and some laws have changed. -

There are some states that will check for id if buying 22 ammo. They may also ask if you have a pistol permit for 22 ammo. Happens to my dad when purchasing 22 ammo in shops like Gander Mountain. -
A good dog, you will never forget, and it can hurt a very long time from its loss. My dad still misses his hunting dog that broke loose and got hit by a car back while was in high school. My grandfather couldn't catch her in time and had to tell my dad about it when he got off the bus. I still sometime think about the mutt that we had from when was in 5th grade through most of college. She was mainly my dog. She got old, blind, and other health issues while I was at college. I had my parents put her down instead of letting suffer for 3 more weeks until I came home for Christmas break. The memory of it is still almost bring tears to my eyes. We miss my b-in-law's lab mix too. Mischievous puppy, but turned into a good dog. Saved my son from falling off a set of steps that was missing a guard rail. Dinner was just finished cooking, table was being set, football game on the TV, everyone has getting ready to go the table, and my son slipped by and crawled up the steps. The dog went from half-asleep to sprinting across the room and blocking him from falling off the edge. It does get better with time, hang in there.

I think Avella and his kind should be taken on hike on an over-grown trail and to a Christmas tree farm. If they ask why are both a mess, reply should be its your fault, you banned the tools... And how did you think they thin out a corn field or removed diseased corn stalks, you whack them off at the root with a corn knife (basically a specialized machete).

Remember to not put boots too close to a fire, melting boot soles stink and you lose tread. If they have steel toes, well lets just say some people learned the hard way about having steel-toed boots get hot by a fire. They were bootless for awhile. On one winter outing there was a trail shelter. Used that for gear storage and shelter to cook under. Someone over-filled a backpacking stove and it leaked onto the shelter floor unseen... that is until the stove was lit and the floor too. It was smothered out in 1 minute with fresh snow, but did cause a bit of excitement with everyone's packs in there.

The wife can't stand either of these: what-ever floats your boat don't give a rats a$$ When I have had it and don't care, I tend use the second one and then have to her on how she hates that phrase.

Slice thin and fry in canola oil until lightly browned on the edges. Place them on paper towels to drain and cool, salt to taste or other seasoning if desired. For a larger batch, we use a large cast-iron skillet. The last few slices cook with the burner off.
