  1. Welcome to the forum. There are a lot of good people on here. Sometimes there is a bit of ribbing between some long-time members or persons who know each other in person. If you want to see what is out there, go to the trail cam area. Take a little time read the help page on how to post, add links and attach pictures. Happy hunting.
  2. This is a good place to start. I know there are other Long Island hunters out there. You can read or post a note on the area that focuses on your WMU to find others out there. I am further out from from Elmo, so it is not practical for me to head down to your area. If you have some questions on public lands up in Orange County, I can pass on what I know of the area. I am still gathering knowledge about my area, as I am transplant to NY. It's my third year hunting in this state on public land. Most people here are glad to help out.
  3. Growalot, My gardener (guy who cuts the grass only, not actual gardener) tore his rotator cuff. He tried to post-pone surgery until the season is done - Dr says it can't wait and booked his surgery. So we get his nephew to finish the season. The doctor is trying to get you fixed before you have a complete tear and can't move it at all. This will help with the recovery. If you tear it up too bad, you will end up in leg cast, then a walking brace, and then finally get to PT. One of my classmates tore 3 out of 4 tendons and ligaments in his knee. They had to screw things into place and cast him for 2-3 months. Then the knee-brace and PT. Think it took about 5 months after the injury before he was allowed to walk without that knee brace. Get it fixed. Someone can toss you on a wagon and take that out to a hunting spot so you don't miss the season entirely. You can play Queen-bee for the hunt and have someone else do the hard work for you if you have someone around that do this for you.
  4. I figured he would be filled-in by gun season, but not too big for a long drag out. Already has two nice handles to grab him by. Most of the time I am out by myself and may be a mile in. I don't want a monster deer to drag that far and then load up.
  5. I was thinking a large woods or dog tick on it until I enlarged the view. Not a bad looking deer otherwise. My wife and kids would be skeezed out by those growths.
  6. Growalot, Hope all went well with the MRI. I did not get my results back for week after mine before having the knee surgery years ago. Being completely still for a long time was difficult for me. Maybe you can get a temporary disabled permit and go out hunting on ATV like a Gator if surgery is necessary.
  7. Paula, I have do sunscreen thing too - Dr's orders. 4 years ago had pre-cancerous lesion taken off my back - right between my shoulder blades. No heavy lifting or stretching for a couple weeks due to the stitches. For hot outdoor activities, I have moisture-wicking SPF 30 pants and a SPF 30 Hat. Then i just slather up the remaining exposed skin on arms and apply a layer on the ears and nose. Hat keeps the sun off the forehead (and a "thin" spot on top) this way do not have to put sunscreen on my forehead. When you sweat, sometimes sunscreen will come off with sweat and roll into the eyes - that burns. Try taking out contacts while your eyes are burning after running up the stairs half-blind from sunscreen in the eyes. You have to avoid getting a sun-burn on any portion of your skin once you have had a pre-cancerous lesion or skin cancer. Remember on a cloudy day you still can get sun burned. Be careful while outside.
  8. My neighbor who is a NYC officer and another officer I know are very unhappy with the NY "Safe" Act, but this is off topic for this thread. It is suppose to be about another attempt at micro stamped ammunition - this time trying to force it on the manufacturers and have the vendors track who they sold what to and the "unique mark". I saw no proposal on what he unique mark requirement is. In theory they could simply put their company logo on each bullet they produce - making this a useless law that does nothing to track who shot the bullet. All it will do is create longer lines and wait time to purchase ammo. This will hurt local sport shops that are near the borders of the state - customers will go to NJ, CT, VT, & Pa to avoid the wait and hassle. This will in turn hurt the state in their pockets - no sales = no taxes collected. To think to that they are trying to tout that this is sportsman friendly state. Look at Cuomo's letter on the inside cover for the current Hunting regulations issue - I almost laughed while reading that. This to me this proposal also appears that it could be illegal in terms of interstate trade. We need to start persuading our state legislators to get this proposal axed now they are going back into session and remind them of our disgust for the NY Safe Act.
  9. We have to keep my assembly woman in office - she voted against the NY "Safe" Act and is petitioning for its repel.
  10. I think part of it was for Cuomo to grab national spotlight to run for President in the future and show how he gets things done. Of course this was by declaring a emergency on a non-emergency need and force it through the state legislate without any review by the public, or provide our legislators time to make an informed opinion before voting on it. I think the rational was to find a away to legislate preventive measures to keep a future Sandy Hook from occurring in his state while it was a hot topic. Of course they dis-missed actual research that most crimes are done with hand-guns, the majority of the offenders are not allowed to possess or use a firearm in the first place, and the implements used were illegally obtained. God-forbid they consult a firearms expert, understand the existing laws, and ignore the rights outlined Constitution, Bill-of-Rights, and our own state constitution. I think there should be a requirement for political officials to study and pass a review on the existing rights, laws, and legislative processes that must be followed. I'm not saying these people are not smart. I know a few highly intelligent and educated people, but they just are short on common-sense and are very gullible. I suspect that is partly how this "Safe" Act got pushed through. They may not even realize that you can vote yea, nay, or abstain. If you don't understand what is up for a vote, demand competent clarification, or abstain from voting on it.
  11. It feels like he is starting year 7 already. Circumventing the Constitution and Bill of Rights by Executive Order should be impeachment and automatic repeal of the illegal act. But that is my view of things. Hope he is persuaded to not to do the wrong thing. How many instances of shootings are there with the M-1 Garand or M-1 carbine, or a Mosin-Nagent? I can see disallowing RPG's and functioning full-auto machine guns, but older-to-antique bolt-actions, and 6-round semi-automatics? Guess the venerable Colt 1911 and German Lugers would be on the banned list too. I do agree on stopping felons from getting a firearm because it is registered to a corporation and not the individual. Isn't there be a law banning felons from working armed security jobs?
  12. the Obama administration announced new steps Thursday on gun control, curbing the import of military surplus weapons... ...under the new policy, only museums and a few other entities like the government will be eligible to reimport military-grade firearms. http://news.msn.com/us/obama-offers-new-proposals-on-gun-control say goodby to the Mosin's and other old, but usable out-dated military arms from past conflicts if Obama gets his way.
  13. Booked up by the wife - her birthday this weekend so she made plans for all day Saturday, and then Sunday afternoon through the evening for a concert at West Point. If not raining, hope to look for squirrels on Monday and do some scouting. Somewhere need to squeeze in some gardening/yard work, finish stripping a dresser to refinish it, and cleaning up the garage too. Gawd, I need a weekend to go camping and relax.
  14. I'm not sure for this state, I grew up further south with a different deer season. It may also very a bit by what part of the state you are in - different climate, slightly different rut period. My first deer that I dropped was a doe. Then I got a 6 and a 4 pointer. Since moved to NY, only see does. Just not been in a shooting position/range to bag one.
  15. Forget the bow. Looks like you could walk up with a hammer or a nine iron and still get one. Upon seeing that, my thoughts were: is that a petting zoo that is a lot of "speed" beef
  16. I'd look for a used Browning A-5 in 12 or 20 gauge. A lot of them were plugged to limit to 3 rounds for Federal migrating bird restrictions. I have seen some between $400 and $500 (field models, not the fancy gold tiggers or Ducks Unlimited versions). Easy to swap-out barrels or remove barrel to clean it. Easier to put barrel back on the A-5 than when re-attaching barrel on a double-barrel. If you go that route, look for Belgium or USA made ones. Avoid the Japanese made barrels on the latest models before they were retired in the 80's. Over course if you are looking for a camo stock and barrel, you have to look elsewhere. Don't see the point of a camo gun. We never had problems getting ducks, geese, deer, or rabbits in my family with hardwood stocks and blued barrels on our shotguns and rifles.
  17. Had Arthroscopic surgery to clean up some scar tissue in my knee from a collision playing football in high school. One day of pain meds, maybe a week of OTC Tylenol after the surgery when needed. A week or two after surgery drove myself back to college. Needed 3 months of PT to build strength back up as I had been limping on it for several months beforehand. Took 4-5 months to get full flex range back. Sometimes change of season or really cold weather still bothers it. Had to stop running/jogging, as it's just not the same since high school. I can run for 1-2 minutes at most, then the knee says time to start walking. Sucks since I was a distance runner in high school. I can still backpack or kick the brush all afternoon for bunnies and birds. Regret the surgery, no. My knee use to lock up some days and then on another it would just give while walking on a sidewalk. Those days are behind me. If PT resolves the issue, you will have faster recovery than to have surgery, and then wait 3-6 weeks to start PT.
  18. Yes he can get does tags. Just wait until he turns 16 - it gets expensive fast. Full license cost but still needs to be supervised for deer and have to pay for doe permits and turkey tags. I think it should be more of tiered system - a minor is a minor. I think they should have 2 levels of junior licenses and keep the fees down for all licenses for minors. Something like entry level and then graduated junior license to hunt small game alone. My son went out 2 times last year for deer season - now he is sixteen and doing more stuff at school over the weekends (building sets for school productions, working on/testing special effects for the productions, SAT's & ACT, getting service hours for graduation). He has to do some hard thinking before we get his license this year.
  19. I do well with Remington sluggers for deer and Federal #6 for small game in my 16 gauge. My son's H&R 20 gauge slug gun seems good on Hornady sabots - or at least that because what they used when dialing in the scope for 120 yards.
  20. I would have thought he would have started from the belly or chest to peel back the skin, cut the meat off, and then bag it as he moved along rolling the carcass over onto the freed skin to access the other side. Then bag the skin. I would have preferred to keep hide intact as possible, sans the head, and cut off the antlers - slitting the legs and peeling that towards the back to keep it more intact. Guess I want just to save a hide for a rug or jacket.
  21. So, I guess there are no hybrids elsewhere in the state? No one had any domestic turkeys escape to breed with the wild ones or had wild ones come to score free food and breed with their domestic farm flock? Not very likely. I am sure there are a few other ones across the state. Of course they may take the road that they do not want spread hybrids in the general turkey population. This leads to the question, do these hybrids improve the quality of the turkeys in the long run (domestic or wild)?
  22. Happy birthday. Hope you got something you needed for this season.
  23. Jason, You can hunt parts of Long Island, or go up to Putnam County, or cross the Hudson and go up to Orange County to Stewart buffer lands by Newburgh (zone 3m), or get a permit ($5) to hunt in Sterling Forest by Tuxedo (zone 3P, or apply for a deer permit for WestPoint (zone 3P). If you go to the Stewart buffer lands, it is shotgun and archery only. NO RIFLES including rimfires. They have rabbits, squirrels, deer, turkey, ducks, pheasants, groundhogs, and snapping turtles. You do have to watch out for the occasional mountain biker who ignore the hunters only signs during deer season. Sterling Forest has squirrels, pheasants, turkey, deer, ducks, bear, foxes and coyotes. Hunt off-trail to avoid day-hikers in the early part of the season. Some portions of Sterling Forest are archery only. If Sterling Forest sounds familiar to you, that may be because of the NY Renaissance Fair is held on a portion of the property. Parts of West Point are shotgun only, others areas allow rifle. Must register at fire control center each day you hunt and sign out when done. If you are into archery, there are some areas in Westchester county to get you a little close to home. If you are using a shotgun, get a couple snap caps. Practice dry-firing with them to avoid the flinch some people develop in anticipation for the kick of a gun. When you actually take a shot at a deer the first-time, you will not feel anything due the excitement of your first deer shot. Good luck out there. Always err on the side of caution, and welcome to the forum.
  24. I miss those days hunting rabbit, dove and quail. Now the family farm is gone. My great uncles' that had the beagles have passed on as well. I moved to NY for better job opportunities several years ago, so I not hunted with my dad in 10 years. Too expensive to get an out-of-state license to hunt only a couple days (no Sunday hunts back home) when go back to visit on some weekends. Of course the foxes moved in an took out most of the rabbits before the land was sold. Now I only see a rabbit in the yard by the garden (that bunny is never in season as I live in town), and see a couple others after sunset as I drive out from a deer hunt. Maybe I just need a rabbit dog for the local public lands. Maybe the wife will let me get a dog that bays while hot on tail of a rabbit - not!!
  25. Stags vs hunters. They get the ball, I take first shot. (click, BANG, thud) Honey I dinner for us from the pick up game
