  1. If a manufacturer is producing firearms for the military, They may push the look of the AR's. Some of the externals are probably shared with the civilian models. Economies of scale. Less different parts to produce = more profits. Home defense weapons tend to have the military look. They are designed to allow a greater range of body types and strengths to shoulder the gun. A gun that is designed to fit a 6' 3" 230 lbs guy will not comfortably fit his petite 5'6" wife/girlfriend. So it is a buy 2 or one that its adjustable on the fly in an emergency. If money is tight, which would buy, 2 or one that has an adjustable stock? You also need to remember that in past wars, you could bring home a souvenir gun and sword captured from the enemy. Lots of people have these old German, Russian, and Japanese military rifles that grand-dad or great grand-dad brought home from the war. Younger persons may want that military look, but with a modern gun and caliber. I am not into these AR types, but they have a rail/multi-rail system to make is easy to swap out scopes, lights, etc. that other groups have interests in. I prefer the look of a nice wood stock, not the synthetics. But that is my choice. A look is a look. Just because a kit car can look like a Ferrari or an SC Cobra, doesn't make it as fast as the real thing.
  2. In looking up info for something else. I discovered another option if you both have Facebook accounts. VNC has an app call deskhop that you can use through an invite from Facebook.
  3. Last I knew, Webex and GoToMeeting are paid services may work short term on a free trial. Remote Desktop is basically turned-of by default on most Windows based computers, and you would need to be on the same network ( like both connected to your home Wifi). Best options would be LogMeIn free, Join.Me, or TeamViewer. I have used all three to assist someone I know who lives a few hundred miles away at no cost to me. I used a paid service for work.
  4. Not sure about parking down the road. Usually there some places to park a car near an AT trail road crossing. Just not sure about this area. I know of two-three spots around Sterling Forest and Indian Hill to access the AT. Worse case is to just park at Pochuck. I know at least 6 cars/trucks fit in there. One of my kids puddle-jumped until the clothes were falling off from being so soaked. All we could do was laugh and grab a towel. Same kid a few years later sat in the rain to see how long it would take for it to put out the campfire completely. Now they dart for cover. If you go, don't forget the hot coco and marshmallows. That is first thing my kids ask about as we pack up to go. If you drink coffee, here is an option to reduce carrying a coffee pot. Campmor has a single-serve coffee strainer/filter. Put in the coffee and pour hot water into it. It filters down to your cup. Toss out the grinds and rinse the filter when done. Wife drinks the coffee, not me. So I got her that. If car camp, we take the 2-cup perculator pot. She is happier with her coffee. The wife likes car camping to have the air bed. But then again, she was a city girl.
  5. Duck and cover of course
  6. Turkeys by me are hanging out between a catholic church, a synagogue, and a golf course. They must have god and golfers on their side. I may head out to Pine Island area to see the turkey situation there to plan for the upcoming season soon. With the predicted rain for all week-end, I will not make out there for a week or two. Are you looking to camp out at Pochuck Mountain State Forest? If so, plan for a muddy entrance and parking area. The puddles were car-sized at the entrance at end of the deer season. Now you have the snow melt added to it. Unless you are heading in the to the stream (which is a bit of a hike), suggest carrying in water. You will have to pack out all trash from there and dispose of at home. No portables for bathroom there either. The Appalachian trail is just outside of Pochuck Mountain. I have not hiked that part of the AT, so have no way to advise on that trail, but that is another option for you. I passed through part of Sterling State forest yesterday. Due to similar cover and terrain, there most-likely will be some snow on the ground, especially in the sheltered/shady areas of Pochuck Mountain and Appalachian trail. By the way, I got the camping itch too. In my teens and early 20's the first "spring" camp out we did was usually the weekend of the time change.
  7. Join Me and Team viewer can do the trick.
  8. I only drove cars for years until it became difficult to get home in the snow (not enough ground/snow clearance). Bought a used 4x4. Didn't snow much for two years - temporary weather insurance. Was driving 100/day, gassing up twice a week. That hits the pockets hard - especially since got rid of the Camry. Now driving a car for daily commute to save some money and use the 4x4 for bad weather and hunting. Don't want to give up the 4x4 unless have too. Got me home with about a foot snow on the road. Save some funds and pick up an old Cherokee, Tacoma, or Ram Charger 4x4 beater truck later on. That way can still toss the kids in for those truck times. I can say that putting 3 kids in the back of a Cherokee is tight. Other wise get a min-van. Stow/remove the back seats and put it down a tarp to use as a hauler. Done that for lumber and drywall a few times, and moved a washer and dryer in it. It is not a truck but can do some truck things with better gas mileage. Nice thing about a minivan is that you can separate the kids if the need arises.
  9. My dad does not usual lose things. He drop his truck keys help a friend in his 1 acre garden. Gets a ride home to pick up spare set. He purchases a metal detector to find them in the garden - no keys found. He packs up the metal detector and chats awhile with his friend. Heads back to the truck and see his original set laying on the lawn. At least he got a new toy out of the deal to explore the beach.
  10. The spare car key is now my car key. Wife needed to use my car 4 months ago - someone blocked her in. Left my keys on the night table a usual and told where they were and jumped I the shower. Took the Jeep to work since she had the car. Of course next day want to take the car and no keys. Now she says she used her set and not mine. My keys are missing. Happens to be the only set with the remote for the doors that is missing. Went to get a copy made and find out that they are micro-chipped keys and cost about $100. Of course she has 4 pocketbooks/bags that she uses and switches between. Swears she does not have the keys in any of them. Meanwhile I have moved the bed, night table, checked night table drawer, checked my slippers, emptied laptop bag, checked my jackets 2 twice and searched the entire car. The only thing I can come up with is the dog ate them.
  11. Even some of the people who go camping to spend time in the outdoors/woods leave their trash laying there. I ways end up having more garbage to dispose of than I created every time we go camping. Even witnessed a few scouts dropping their candy wrappers on the ground instead of using the trash bag 15-20 away. We loved to make those we caught doing this have site clean-up duty. They tend to learn after a while. I know where some hunters are taking their shots because I find 2-3 empty shotgun shells in clusters on public lands. Sometimes their plastic water bottle or juice bottle is just a few steps away too. These guys give the rest of us a bad name and degrade the place. Believe me, you don't want to find a glass bottle under the leaves when wearing lite-weight running shoes. The glass can and does go the sides of the shoes. Got my inside arch. No more trail jogging for me. Just walk with hiking boots these days.
  12. Forgot to mention, always take spare clothes and a sweatshirt for both of you. If he lets go of the rod, you may have to go in after it - prepare for it, but always assume it will be the best day out for the two of you.
  13. Bobbers are easy, but hard keep the kid patient with them if there are others nearby that are spin-casting with lures. Try to be a bit secluded from others fishing if possible. Don't add on additional kids - gets difficult to manage. Try having 1-2 adults supervising 4 kids between ages 5 and 11 from a shore line. They all can't wait, lose worms, want a different lure, and tangle the lines (or catch a tree). Just you and your son should be good. Take some juice boxes and snacks along to take a break for a bit and re-enage in fishing if he gets bored for while. Watch birds while out fishing to provide some other visual stimulus during the wait for the line to be hit. Tell a few stories of times you went fishing. If he enjoys it, may want to consider getting him kids a tacklebox later on. After a trip out fishing, let him pick out a bobber for himself or other non-impaling fishing accessories, like the fake worms you can add to a hook. I put a luggage lock on my and my kids tackle boxes. Lessens the accidental spillage and keeps fingers away from the hooks. Don't forget kids must have a fishing licensed adult supervising them, so keep your fishing license current. Keep a life-preserver on him just in case. Believe me they all eventually will say, I will be careful and won't fall in.
  14. Just another reason why I refuse to work in NYC. Take a few Tylenol before leaving so it can kick in at the time you hit the rowdy loud noise levels.
  15. The shotguns should be fine as long they are not designed skeet shooting with a full choke. Deer hunting in NY required using a single projectile, so must purchase slugs for deer hunting with a shotgun. Single, Over-Under, side-by-side, doesn't matter as long as you are comfortable with the gun and know how it shoots. If you use shotgun, this opens you up to use Stewart Forest buffer lands, just west of the Stewart Airport near Newburgh/New Windsor. Have to be careful if go to Storm King Mt. (rifle or shotgun) if the weather is nice, will have a lot of hikers go through. Had some with dogs off lease go by, so watch for yellow labs. If you can get 3P permits, you can try to get a permit to deer hunt at West Point. Requires that you shoot a doe first on base. You have to apply for a West Point permit - requirements can vary year to year. Cadets and active army personnel came first. They have shotgun only zones and rifle zones.
  16. Sorry to hear that. Cancer is a tough thing to deal with. Six survivors and 4 deaths from it in my family. One loss was a 12 year-old cousin - brain tumor. Another was my wife's grandmother - succumbed to lung and liver cancer from second-hand smoke. Be strong for your wife. Support her the best you can in dealing with what is happening with her sister.
  17. Crappy Ice, I know a few kids who don't hunt and wear camo. Some do fish and go camping. Others are just "styling" in the camo (you know, Duck Dynasty). Others are wearing to it show support for relatives in the service. One of those kids I know has an uncle that is a Marine stationed in Afghanistan. I don't know of any school shootings involving the assailant(s) wearing camo. So not sure why that teacher is linking camo with school shootings. The school science labs are more dangerous than a kid wearing camo sweatshirt (Bunsen burners, boiling water, mixing chemicals, burning magnesium, etc.)
  18. I rather see a kid wearing an NRA t-shirt then some girl wearing those pants with bold letters across their bottom saying JUICY. Those pants are inappropriate attire. Just makes more people look at their butt, cause distractions or unwanted advances. If the school has an issue with the t-shirt, they should have given a warning for it first, not a suspension. That is ridiculous. Might as well ban T-shirts from StarWars, Avatar, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean, Hunger Games - there is fighting in those movies. Maybe add ones supporting any bands with songs about teen angst, fighting, revolution, bullying, sex, etc. Next thing will be disallowing Civil Air Patrol, JROTC, etc from wearing their uniform to school. What about a scout that is part of a Venture Crew with the Police dept - that would be supporting guns - would they be banned from wearing a something associated the Police dept or their Venturing Crew? The liberals need to get over this. Unless the schools have a certain dress code (suits and ties, dresses/skirts) or school uniforms, they need to get back to normal reality. The funny thing is some of these schools have an archery program for the girls Phys. Ed classes. Last time I checked, a bow can be a weapon. What hypocrites they are.
  19. Thought I had parked the Jeep until its time to drive through the mud for Turkey season. Not much snow predicted coming my way, but with freezing temps all day bound to have some icy roads. Not much salt left in my town, so may need that 4 wheel drive to get back uphill to the house.
  20. Here is my list snow removal equipment list: snow shovel salt hot shower A bottle of Aleve couple glasses of lemonade recliner At least this time I had 2 additional helpers for a total of 9 man hours. First 30-45 minutes was shoveling path and freeing the gate down the back step for my dog crossing her legs.
  21. The yearly hot air session for the President to announce his plan and have everyone applaud him so he thinks he is doing a good job. I need some aspirin before it starts. Been lucky to stay employed, but I am worse-off. Recession over.. right. put a Stay his existing funds and put him to work with the working and middle-classes. See how he thinks things are then. Obama-care - sucks. Website does not work well and the system is not working correctly. I have friends that had to sign up and are still waiting for the healthcare card. Nothing has been received in the mail. They had to call in to make sure they are actually covered. For now they have to carry around a print-out of the confirmation number from the website. At least my company still offers health insurance. Of course Obama will just stay he fixed health-care and ended the recession... now we need to do something about those "assault" guns. If looks like a rose but doesn't smell like a rose or grow like a rose, is it still a rose?
  22. If you follow their list of prompts for a .22 semi-auto that has a 10-round detachable mag on a thumb-hole or telescoping stock, it is an assault weapon. Hunting rifles not affected -- if you believe that, I can sell you a bridge in Brooklyn. At least so, far I am legal and don't have to register anything. If they start making bolt-action or lever-action that have a 10 round mag on one those competition thumb-hole stocks, or telescoping stocks be classified as an assault weapon, I bet more gun owners/hunters would take notice.
  23. bluecoupe, I was referring to the semi-auto's. I can use a pump-action, but not comfortable with it. With a semi, I can keep my eye on target easier for a follow up shot. The balance changes while you pump the pump-action. It just feels wrong to me. Maybe that's from starting out with a sxs in my youth. Minimal body movement, easier to keep on target.
  24. Don't forget that this ridiculous law includes semi-auto shotguns (thumb-hole, collapsible, or fold-able stocks that have a pistol grip or the capability to have a muzzle brake or flash suppressor screwed on it). Now can't get an adjustable stock that fits you and the mrs or teenage daughter and have muzzle brake to reduce the recoil so she doesn't hurt herself on a 12 gauge. Now would have to but a 12 gauge for you and a shorter 20 gauge for her. Most of these guns are design to hold 3-5 rounds only. A revolver with spare, preloaded cyclinders is more of an assault weapon than the civilian shotguns are. I doubt you need a certificate to by ammo for any caliber, otherwise you would one to purchase ammo for a 20 gauge single-shot too. But then, we do have many idiots in office, and some that are too lazy to read what they are voting on. My rep vote no, due not enough time to review the bill to make an informed decision. However, they are not running again
  25. Besides looking at kennels/breeders, you may want to see about rescues at animal shelters too. Our dog was a rescued puppy that was shipped here from southern Texas that we picked up at the local shelter. Met one hunter who got his best "coon hounds from a ASPCA shelter. You just never know. Stop by a couple shelters and let them know. Some of them will let you if one comes in, or even keep a look out for one when they transfer dogs in from an over-loaded shelter.
