  1. Every area is different and that is why its divided. That is why we have WMUs. The fact that only 900 DMPs were given out in my area doesnt affect me, and I dont care how many the neighboring WMU is giving out has nothing to do with my unit. Their area can possibly hold more deer and more permits are given out. The DEC are the ones that know why.(More homes?)
  2. Deer numbers were down throughout the entire state, dont just look at the AR zones. I have no problems seeing deer, and if you look at burmjohn's photos you can tell there is no shortage. His place is right down the street from me and have had the pleasure to meet him and his family during the hunting season to discuss deer hunting and from the amount of does and bucks he saw there is no shortage of deer. If you dont hunt it you dont know. I didnt get a dmp and still see no problem filling tags if I choose. I'm not going home with a pocket full of tags and I have proven that to you 2 years in a row so far.
  3. Buckstopshere The reason PAs herd is down is because of all those doe permits they gave out to balance the herd, not cause of ARs. ARs was probably the carrot, I don't know. Never in one of those videos was ARs even mentioned for being the downfall to their deer numbers. In my area where we have ARs I have seen more deer and more bucks in the last few years. They are barely giving any doe permits. I dont see it going the same direction as PA. I dont believe that ARs are the answer to all but it works, the part that makes it mandatory is the reason why its working. It has been the best hunting I have had in the entire time I have hunted there.
  4. I need to ask a stupid question. How in your mind do you think that ARs are the reason for the drop in the deer population in PA? What are you trying to show everyone how corrupt they are? How they lied to sportsman on their FACTUAL SCIENCE to get what they wanted and not the sportsman. I believe that he was a great speaker and biologist and told the truth on how you cant believe what they tell you is fact and science. The fact and science is the hunter himself that is afield and knows what is happening. In all eight segments it proves who is on the agenda. If you were trying to prove that ARs are a bad thing, sorry to tell you you wasted your time and also mine and probably everyone elses. It only proves the corruptness of the ones you want to believe that have the fact and science you are all waiting for. The TRUE fact and science are the ones that are out there knowing what is actually happening. The HUNTERS! Keep waiting on the DEC to bring you fact and science.
  5. How is the 3 inch spike rule an effective way to manage a deer population? They all have a death sentence. Bucks aren't going to manage the deer population, does are. Older bucks in the woods are going to give you more of an exciting hunt. reguardless if a spike makes you happy a bigger buck is always nice to be able to get and would make any hunter happy.
  6. Culver, You are fortunate to see deer like that where you hunt, and I could guarantee most of the state doesnt describe their hunting experience in NY like you just did. If most people would be able to see deer like that it wouldnt even be an issue to discuss. You are probably a small percentage of hunters that sees what you see. Hunting where I hunt I have never seen 6 150 inch deer in my entire time hunting. I would love to see one in a year.
  7. I have said it that they have been working for me and everyone else I hunt with and others in my area I know and talk to. They will only work if everyone around your hunting area does the same. The people I hunt with havent shot any bucks that are 1 1/2 years old reguardless of how many points they carry knowing that they have seen bigger deer that are around where they hunt. They are not expecting 170 inch deer to pass them but they do know that there are at least 2 1/2 year olds frequenting the area that they could have an opportunity to take. I'm not talking about one 2 1/2 year old either, I have seen at least 5 different 2 1/2 year olds on one camera where I took my buck. My stand sits in the bottom of a valley next to a small swamp. The deer come off the top of the hills and drop right down in front of me Crazy setup, perfect spot.
  8. We havent seen alot of movement cause of the winds, but we have all seen deer. My close group of hunters has already taken 3 nice bucks in the first week. A couple of guys have been busted by the bucks before taking a shot the others have seen some bucks but nothing they wanted to shoot or the bucks were too far. So far so good. Noone has taken a doe yet, they have all been waiting to take a buck. That normally changes after the first week if they havent taken a buck.
  9. Like I have said, You can only go after what you have in the area. If I knew there was a good chance of shooting bigger I would let those go. There are a few 3 1/2 year olds in the area that I have seen driving around, but in 4 months of watching my trail cameras I have not seen any of them near my hunting property. If everyone allows them to get older then then chances increase, the same way the 2 1/2 year olds have increased with antler restrictions in our area. Many bucks of this age group around on my cameras so that is what I went for. If some of those make it through the hunting season we will see them bigger next year. Then after knowing that I have older bucks walking around my property is when I will go for the older ones. One person cant make a difference in what we do, but everyone as a group can. It takes the cooperation of everyone around to make a difference. People have said that I was going to eat tag soup waiting for a rack to shoot. So far two years in a row within the first week.
  10. The more people want change, the more chance of it happening. Change happened in my area cause the people wanted it. It doesnt have to be ARs cause I'm sure there is better than what we have. But I'm pretty positive in saying that any change would be better than what most of the state has. Hunting is a tradition. 3 inch spike rule shouldnt be considered a tradition.
  11. If you shorten the gun season and make a longer bow/crossbow. it would make bow hunters a longer season and gun hunters a chance to be in the woods when its quieter. Take some and loose some
  12. Shorten the gun season and see how many people pick up the crossbow. Many that just gun hunt will be hunting with a crossbow during archery even the ones that cant draw a bow back. youngsters and the elderly
  13. Crossbows are in the wrong season right now to bring in new hunters. I'm not a big crossbow person, but I feel they are in the wrong season due to them being so inferior to the gun. If we want more hunters staying and joining put them in the archery season and shorten the gun. See what a difference it would bring. Guaranteed more hunters than the prior year. The older hunter would still be in the woods during the bow/crossbow season.
  14. It is sad when any type of change for better hunting is proposed there is always others to knock it down. I being pro AR am for ARs cause its all we have in our area as far as something that is working for a better hunting experience. Is it the answer to all? No, but it works cause it is way better than what we had. For those that feel that it is all about us and not for the deer herd just read what you have been writing. "The first time hunter cant shoot a spike." "Some people can't find the time." "Why should someone tell me what I can or can't shoot." These are the real selfish reasons on why we cant have change. It's not the guy who wants a rack who is being selfish, but the person who refuses all types of change reguardless of what they are cause that is what they have been doing their whole time hunting. I believe that if we do get a better management plan that will produce a better hunting experience it will bring in more hunters that would be making the DEC more money. New York IMO needs change to keep the number of hunters they have and to create a better hunting experience. The whole 3 inch legal buck thing is a bunch of crap! Put a 3 inch buck broadside and put a 140 inch ten point broadside at 20 yards in front of you and see which one you would shoot.
  15. Culver, were you able to get any info back from Maine. I remember you saying that you were going to try to get some info from them about a month ago. Just curious
  16. It is very possible to still get a buck during the rifle season with 3 points on one side or better. The chances of a DMP in that area are very slim. If you do have a bow and get a muzzleloader you chances of harvesting any deer have increased cause of the extra tags. There are alot deer around good luck. You can also go to long island state land during the shotgun season. unlimited does in that area. Not sure how far it is from you. That area has alot of deer running around
  17. Regular season you can shoot a doe if you have a DMP and a buck. Archery and Muzzleloader you can shoot a total of 2 does for both seasons. or one buck and one doe
  18. I could only talk about the area I hunt. If I would of set a goal (before ars came into affect) example "From now on I'm only going to shoot a 2 1/2 year old buck or older. It would of probably never happened cause these bucks were really non existant. Since these restrictions came to our area it honestly alot different. The couple of years I have harvested at least a 2 1/2 year old within a week of hunting passing on all 1 1/2 year old bucks. This year 3 out of 8 of us already got a nice buck within the first week and a couple of others had the opportunity on a nice buck but got busted before the shot went off. This is last years buck and this years for me
  19. You cant practice it volunatary cause on small parcels of land you would go ten years and never fill a buck tag if you were the only one within 400 acres doing it. That hunter is forced to have to harvest a yearling cause he would never fill it otherwise. I wouldnt consider these people to have phoney support. I consider it not having an opportunity to practice their type of management. They could practice it with absolutely no results.
  20. For the hunters that dont have ARs they are forced to only harvest what is availible to them. If a 2 1/2 or a 3 1/2 is rare in the area what do you expect that hunter to harvest? Unless everyone in your area is doing some type of management that is the only way something like ARs will ever work. That is why the percentages dont change in NY state. You can only hunt what is there. You cant hunt something that is not there. Tomorrow I am going to kill a mountain lion in NY. :-X
  21. Another one bites the dust. He is now only a five point cause he is all broken up. This morning 845am, 20 yards. 195 pound live weight. 155 dressed
