Hopefully this will make you guys feel better!! Last year after sitting through a storm that dumped about and inch of rain and had strong winds I missed a Hog of a 10 pointer!! (I did kill the branch though)..............Nor' Easter....what Nor' Easter, I didn't think I would see anything last year on that day and honestly I thought that I was the only idiot in the woods in the state of NY, but I came face to face with Mr. Big. Stay optomistic...good things will happen!! Good Luck to all!!

I was actually thinking the other day along the lines of women hunters and the specific fertile time, if that would attract anything. Personally, believe it or not I find "skoal mint" as a great attractant. While hunting and dipping, spitting right under my stand...many deer have come to check it out!

I only secure the top portion. For the bottom, I just watch my foot placement...but once it is set it is very sturdy. The new climbers are great and easy to use

same here...I climb all over and pretty much on any size tree. Obviously the larger the tree the more secure you feel but i have climbed a tree that was about 5 inch in diameter and was fine. Gut, i think you right...as long as you take your time and make sure to set the platform. I do strap the top section to the tree as i have hit it while going to stnad and it has lowered but (knock on wood) haven't had a problem with the bottom. Although i have it tethered to the top so it if does fall it's not going to far. (I climb with the Summit Viper)

I haven't even looked at my tags since I got them but I will now. I would keep them out of the car for now, that may have something to do with it, the heat and the moisture. This is off memory, butt he backer of the tag should and possible portions of the front may have been printed with "ink" but for the most part the front of the tags are imaged by heat (that is why they tell you watch it by fire), there is no ink. If the head of the printer isn't hot enough, the "burn" doesn't get deep enough into the paper and the image will start to fade. It also depends on the chemicals used in the sustrate (our tags are not paper)...it may have too much of a coating.

DoeWhacker you right....this is from the Hunting and Trapping Guide regarding legal implements. " Long (Stick), recurve or Compound bow with draw weight greater then 35lbs"

Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)
Paulie replied to TheHunter's topic in General Hunting
I think that we all should wear some orange front and back for our own good. Wearing orange isn't going to kill you but not might. I was walking into the woods a few years ago along a very long field that was kind of arced...as I approached the top of the arc i saw a few deer about 100 yards off grazing towards the woods. Behind them there was a hill that went almost vertial for 150 feet (great background for shooting)....on one side of the hill the land was flat for about 30 yards (of woods) until it went up the mountain. The deer were in no hurry, so while I was watching them to see if I could pick up any more I was also checking the the woods on the side. (Probably about 40 yards from where I would be shooting). Long story short was that there was nothing there....I had the gun up and was getting ready to shoot when the deer took off! What the hell just happend I thought to myself as I lowered the gun. Just then I see a guy and his 12 year old son walking out of the woods in full camo (faces painted and all). I said what was on my mind and a bit more to them as they were trespassing as well. In any event, I started playing things out in my head...if the deer ran the other way towards them (and it wasn't me hunting..cause I wouldn't take that shot) they would have been right in the line of fire and I highly doubt anyone would have seen them through the scope...could have been a really bad situation. Sorry for the long post, but just thought it could put some perspective to it..... So since then I make sure I have orage on my chest, front and back as well as my head.......i don;t think you need to look like a pumpkin but have enought to be seen. -
The "Official" Where are you from, where do you hunt / fish thread.
Paulie replied to burmjohn's topic in Introductions
Another one from Dutchess. Do most of my hunting in Rhinebeck and a little in CT. Working on trying to get a few spots closer to home as I lost a few spots in the last couple of years...... -
Same here....wish i hunted there, haha!! Those are definitely some dandy bucks!!! I do have a question though, in the first pic, what is that in the background in the top left of the pic? is that a scarecrow?

My sister live in Stormville (not to far from Ninham) and had a black bear across the street from her just last week. First time they saw that. I live in Pawling and we have a few that frequent my neighborhood. Last year my neighbor saw it twice, once in his back yard playing with a garbage bag. The second time the bear was in his garage... I had only seen some tracks (yet to see the bear in person)...the sucker walked between my garage door and car on x-mas eve..... I think that we are hearing more of the encounter for multiple reasons. 1. The internet. 2. Surbaban sprawl 3. bears are spreading their territory

With limited time to hunt, rain really kills me. Last year I was pretty much hunting only mornings due to time constraints.....I was able to get out one sat afternoon. The weather was not looking good (I was hopeful that it would hold off). Sure enough, once i got on top of the mountain it poured. Instead of climbing, I settled under a large pine in hopes that it would shelter me from the rain.....within five minutes, I was soaked straight through (I couldn't even keep my Blackberry dry in my pocket under all my clothes. Needless to say, the rain let up a little and a doe appeared in front of me. I was getting read to take her when out of the blue a huge 10 pointer came running in and stopped 20 yards from me. My shot was right on (probably a double lung) if it were not for the small branch that reached out and grabbed my arrow. Needless to say that was the biggest buck I have seen in a long time......so yes I will hunt in the rain (although with the bow, the shot needs to be as close to a slamdunk as you can get or the bow doesn't get pulled back)

I shoot Spitfire's...went to mechncial's about three years ago because I figired there was less Broadhead to catch a branch....that was until last year when I missed a nice 10 pointer cause i shot the branch instead....I am thinking about going back to the ole Thunderheads. Also, think about decreasing the poundage in case you have to hold at full draw for a minute or two.....I shoot 70lbs as well and have no problem pulling straight back easily, but when you have to hold for a minute it sucks....

Thanks sits...yeah I am behind the times a little....the Ukrain was great, I was over there hunting Bigfoot but came up empty handed ;D

I was wondering if anyone can confirm for me what I have just heard. I was told that it was in a loacl paper in Putnam that Crossbows are now legal in NY but only during gun season?? I apologize if I missed this in another post, I am still trying to catch up on all of them...
