  1. I really haven't been following it.....but from what I have heard, 5,000 black birds and 100,000 fish died in Kentucky, 50,000 crabs washed up onshore somewhere in the world along with more fish, some turtles and birds.....Have you been following this? if so, what do you think? Government testing, terroist's, the earths axis changing a few degrees or simply the news picking up on something and all other news stations reporting on similar things, or somthing entirely different?? I apologize if my "facts, states and numbers are wrong", but i just wanted to get a thread started to discuss and didn't have time to find the exact numbers and places.....I had an interesting conversation today at work regarding this and figurred it could make for a good discussion....
  2. Thxs Culver, I was just curious as I have never been in a situation like that
  3. Culver, not to divert here but... The NZ ML early season is before any of the SZ seasons, is that correct? What happens when the deer crosses that line into the SZ..how do you tag it?
  4. My old man was an English teacher. If u wrote that essay in his class you would have gotten an A without him even reading it!
  5. I've got a CVA with no scope on it..but want to put one on it this year as I want to hunt with that primarily next year. Bubba, what elese you got for us?
  6. Burt, when are we going? Haha
  7. I've been in the market for some new gear as my camo fleece suit is about 20 years old (and holding strong)...i just can't bring myself to spend a few hundred on new cloths when my family needs things....although I did buy the old many some new gear about 5 years ago. Everytime i go to the store or look in the catalogs I pick out what i want, but when I add up the price, I'd rather get a new gun....after all, I have been hunting in these cloths for a long time and seem to keep warm enough.....can't justify it.
  8. That would have been funny! Me with my own sign. I wasn't at all insulted in her being there, everyone is entitled to there own opinions and beliefs in my mind. Nomal I don;t give those people the time of day but I just had some time to kill....and figured I would just hear waht she had to say. I wasn't even going to bring up that I was a hunter until my buddy did....then she just jumped all over me. I have actually thought about bringing my mount into the city with me and walking down Park Ave petting it to see if anyone would even give me a second look. hahah I have seen some strange things happen and people don;t bat an eye.
  9. Have you ever been so aggrevated at someone that something slipped out? It took a lot on my part to not to say anything, my one little "mean" comment to her was said so that only she could hear it..it was one of those things where you are thinking something and it comes out of your month. I probably could have said something different but that is waht I was thinking becasue of the insults she was throwing at me. When I stop and think about it now (after writing this and things don't always translate the same in writing as in person) I probably did more for hunters buy only making one comment of a mean nature and walking away....I showed that we have self control even when faced with people like this. The guy I was with told me afterwards that he was suprised at how much self control I had not to go off on her...that if anyone could listen to that converstation "we" just got a leg up...and he is very liberal. If you would have met this person at a bar or a super market and she insulted you the way she did me, I'd bet you would have hit her..(if she was a man that is)
  10. Valid point! However at that point in the conversation it wasn't anti vs hunter...it was person to person..I made all my points in a very educated and polite manner...she was the one that started insulting me personally. Even when I threw out my one comment I did it in a polite manner and said thanks for her time and walked away. I am not the type of person to go after someone, unless provoked. And the insults she was spewing deserved much more then my one comment.
  11. I bet your right.... WNY, the only reason I stopped was that I had some time to kill....and figured at least I would be amused. By the end of it though I was getting aggrevate. Everyone is entitled to there opinion, but when you rudely try and force your's upon me (as she did) that began to chap my ass....so I made sure to set her straight. The best part of it was that after I call her a dyke (again no offense to anyone), she ran up to her husband and screamed that guy just call me a dyke.....there was probably about 50 people within ear shot who heard her and the majority laughed...I guess they felt the same way I did...haha
  12. Elmer, I am definitely going to use that one!! haha Burt, I'll ring you up!
  13. just to lay the ground work...I was in New York City working this morning and happend to walk through Grand Central Terminal. On my way out of it, I saw an interesting person protesting.... She had a picture of a calf in a box with a chain around its neck, since I had some time to kill I figured I would see what she was all about. The conversation between her, myself and a collegue started out OK. She was protesting the slaughter of animals (she was a vegan)..as we progressed I innocently asked if the killing of wild animals was OK? Abruptly she responded with "Hunters are the worst, they have no balls". With that I looked down and said I have 2 balls right down there....yet she did not pick up that I was a hunter. My collegue was playing along as well and then decided enough was enough and told her that I was a hunter.....the whole conversation changed after that. She began to tell me about the "reserach she did", on the internet...my question to her was if she believe everything she resd on the internet or if she is talking from experience in the field.......i was rebutted with, "I studied this at Ohio State, and did a Thesis on it!". I couldn't hold it back when I tolde her that she wasted a ton of money if protesting was all she got out of it. She proceeded to "educate" me on the fact that hunters are the ones that are increaseing the deer population.....the food plots that "all" of us put in are makeing the deer healthier and more fertile, therefore having more offspring....since the majority of hunter's shoot bucks and deer are not manogomus the other males impregnate all of the other does and the population keeps growing.....When I asked, "In your research, have you determined the % of land food plots take up compared to the overall/statewide land" No response except that hunter are to blame........She was from Ohio and her father was a big hunter; when I asked her what her father thought of his tree hugging daughter I think that is when she got mad! She began to insult me personally with the your fat and can never get a girl (talk about out of nowhere)....I showed her my ring and said yes I am a little overweight and i don't need to get a girl..as well as.. it takes a lot of money to fill this up (grabbing my gut). After that, I was a little pissed off then and told her that she mustin have gottin laid in a long time or she was a dyke (no offense to anyone)..She told me that her Husband was right over there...! He was looked like a terrorist and was heavier the I am..talk about the "pot calling the kettle black"...... Sorry for this long rant.....I just needed to get it out...to people who know how I feel....I wanted to slug this asshole! Her arguement's were fact less and quit frankly ignorant....i am surprised the anti's even have an arguement with people like her on there side!!! I gave her the opportunity to speak her mind and sharre her opinion...the minute I spoke mine and "poked holes" in her theory.........the conversation went to shit.
  14. I looked into a DIY combo elk/deer in Montana. If memory serves me correct, it would cost me just under 5k for me and my father (flying out for a week) I think the combo tags I mentioned were 650
  15. DoeW, you called BS on double lung or heart shot dear running a few hundred yards. I'll call BS on you! Haha In my younger years, hunting with my father he shot a doe and blew the heart apart!(There was no heart when we dressed her) She ran 150 yards in a circle. They are probably the most resilent animals out there. I've also witnessed a huge 10 get shot with a bow (from my vantage point it was right in the boilermaker) thought to be a double lung shot (although it could have only been one)...needless to say a blind person could follow this blood trail, it was everywhere, on the ground, bubbles, waste high on trees and shrubs. We tracked too quick because the shot looked so good...jump the deer twice and he ran over a mile. To this day, I cannot fathom how he ran that far losing so much blood... In any event, you need to exhaust all options once a shot is made. Without knowing the details here its tough to c omment.
  16. Culver.....to answer your earlier questions....if we bring in someone new we would put them on watch with someone in the group that is experience (not by themselves)... The scary thing here is that this is not rocket science but I guess some lack common sense...we all should know NEVER to: Shoot over the crest of a hill Shoot into a drive Shoot at "something" unless you are 100% sure of target and background I mean really...a driver or the drive is going to be coming from one direction, wait until the deer get past you and are moving away from the drivers before you shoot...what the hell is so hard about that??
  17. I don't think its the driving...its stupid people! People who shouldn't be in the woods in the first place! I don't do much driving anymore just due to the land I hunt. However when and if I do, I have full trust in the people I hunt with....otherwise I wouldn't be hunting with them. I make sure the people I hunt with share the same standards, saftey considerations and ethics...so I trust them fully.
  18. Thanks guys! Actually, the reason why I was asking is that I was talking to another guy I recently met who hunts on the same property as myself and a buddy of mine. He said that he ran into a few guys last weekend that were giving him a hard time (for being where he was supposed to be and where they were not supposed to be...figures!!).....and one of the guys had two guns with him. I'm assuming that they were ML's but I'm not sure...just didn;t know if that was legal. Personally, I wouldn't want to take two guns as I feel it defeats the purpose/excitement of hunting with a ML.
  19. I'm on a train home an curious. Does anyone know if it is legal to carry more then one ML in the woods at a time?
  20. I got a 35 Rem also and what a peach it is to carry!! Back to the good ole days...well for me (hunting 18 years) we are going to the early to mid 90's. My brother in law got my father into bow hunting and I followed them every where until I was old enough to hunt myself at 14 in '92. My brother in law had a landscaping business and construction business in Westchester (down state) and it seemed that everyone he talked to wanted to get rid of the deer because they were eating their $100,000 shrubs....so we literally had about 100 spots to hunt. Most of the hunting was deer drives so we would go, he would drop my father and I off and then push the ridge or whatever and after about an hour we'ed be off to the next spot. I must say it was great fun, fast paced, never getting bored or cold for that matter....and we saw a lot of deer. One place in particular was a gold mine!! We had permission right next to a larger tract of land with a 10 ft fence surrounding it. The drive was a little over a half mile and produced a huge amount of deer as they would run the fence until they got to the end and then turn to where we were on stand. I will never forget the day my brother in law told me "you are going to see over 100 deer on this drive....the does will be first. Don;t move when you see them. The busck will follow....as soon as you see horns on the other side of the dip pull back and wait, they be on top of you in a few seconds." Never in my wildest dreams did i think 100 deer would come....!! Well let me tell you I lost track at about 87 and they were all does with still more coming and that is when i saw horns. 12 bucks ran by me and jumped over my father that was kneeling behind a stone wall.....these were all buck over 120".....needless to say I never got off a shot and I just kept following the differnt bucks as they ran on either side of my tree!! All in I would saw about 120 deer ran past me and I was sitting in the tree for about 45 mins..... What a hunt!!
