  1. I find they are best opened indoors or in the car before hitting cold air. I have often experienced them not working when opened outdoors in low temps.
  2. Gotta love a snow fall. Found some good big Buck tracks leading to bedding areas. Moved my cameras over them.
  3. I think we need to distance ourselves from the idea that we are all hunters in some kind of communal love-in and we shouldn't criticize one another.. Just cause someone DB picks up a bow or gun a few times a year and shoots animals does not mean he is my kindred spirit. Some of the worst and most unlikable people I know are hunters.
  4. Some trails have a distinctive and dominant directional emphasis. I have noticed that several of our trails generally see deer going in a particular direction most of the time.
  5. Pretty much the major reason I use cheapo cameras. It's like leaving dollars hanging off the trees.
  6. I don't know how harvesting will save the younger animals, who seem to account for most of the mortality.
  7. Just in. Had a doe come tearing past me at 50 yards. Didn't appear to be anything in pursuit. Not that I could see anyway. A flurry of desperation gunfire at 5pm as I was walking in. Snow tracks seem to indicate BigBoy survived yesterday. Let's see if he turns up on cam during the coming week. All in all, a somewhat quiet opener in 9H.
  8. Yard work goals accomplished. Heading out for the rest of the day. Gonna see if Big Boy is laying low in his love den with a doe.
  9. UN’s World Heritage Sites Infringe on US National Sovereignty The UN and the Feds in cohoots: http://canadafreepress.com/article/1968
  10. The Adirondack park is UN biosphere preserve. We don't control what happens there anymore. It's all under UNESCO now
  11. Deer definitely getting pushed around this morning. Heading back to the house for coffee and yard work, I walked into a reasonably large group of doe moving to cover as a group. Likely for safety. Back out for magic hour later.
  12. Strangely quite this morning. First shot was 7:22. There was a 3 shot barrage about 8:45. One or two distant shots. All in all, a very quiet opener. Wait til this evening and everyone starts driving their little parcels. Then we will hear some action
  13. This was me last year. Saw 1 Buck twice, a basket 7. Passed him up during bow, brought him down for the freezer at the tail end of gun. Oh, I did see the Big 10 (he was a 9 then) in the Snowvember storm also one time but I was not really in a good position to try for a shot.
  14. and screen them minus their paperwork, coming from a country at war, that likely has no properly functioning bureaucracy right now. He's magic.
  15. I suspect the novelty of need will wear off on this score. I do not foresee a long and fruitful marriage coming out of this.
  16. I prefer to call it willful stupidity. And of course gun hunters who don't bow hunt hate the thoughts of bucks being taken before they get to storm the woods
  17. I dunno, but as an avid bowman I feel bow season drags a bit. I would be quite content with a shorter bow season. It's really more the palpable shift in attitude that occurs as one season goes into another. And the shift is not for the better either. And for those hatin on the trophy aspect of hunting. It exists, get over it. I hunt principally for meat. but I want to enjoy my hunting too. This means, as the years stack up, that my goals have changed and my needs for a challenge have developed and expanded. This invariably means focusing on those larger bucks that are around and figuring out their patterns. It also means necessarily passing on younger animals in order to have a tag for the bigger boys. I would be tagged out on day 1 if meat was my sole consideration. Where's the fun in that? Why are people down on having fun with the hunt?
  18. From the Link: Good article. Of course the untold truth here is that a lot of hunters will kill what ever they feel is legal, with no regard for the state of deer population in the area. I have a self imposed Doe ban on this year because I have seen a stark reduction in their numbers in my area. But will it make a difference? I know for a fact that the neighbors will be bringing in gangs of their buddies who are unfamiliar with the area for opening weekend. Brown and Down Clowns will dominate the land for the next couple of weeks. Gun season is trespasser season for me also. Can't wait.
