Life is like a book and if you don't travel, it's like only reading the first page..... Followed by, I like to shoot my rifle and I like to kill, and Africa is where you go to do that.... Followed by, If there is lead in the air, there is hope in the heart.

They are magical laser beams of death. Only Weatherby branded rifle I have owned. West German 300WBY with claw mount scope and double set trigger. Brake was removable, but I bought it without a thread protector replacement. Really liked the open sights on this gun, I think they were Recknagels of the time period. Might be the only pic I have of it, shame, damn good rifle that paid for a hunt in trade......
-
This 300WBY is in a tupperware Blaser R93 stock, around mid 7 lbs sans sling and ammo. So far the only animal I have taken with it.....180 gr TSX broke offside shoulder I've owned a number of 30 cal magnums....300RUM,300Win Mag,300H&H, and this WBY. I like them, good overall performance on 300-700lb class animals that I like to hunt and at distance if required.

He's got a glass shoulder and thinks anything bigger than a 22 Hornet is a magnum kicker. LOL Doing a cull and trophy hunt with a 300WBY and 180 TSX's this year......sure make nice tiny groups.

Tried to get my schedule worked around to attend SCI, but just to busy with work and upcoming trip. Rigby bought Corbetts original 275 Rigby (some folks might recognize that by 7x57 Mauser as its the same thing) and his 450/400 double. Would have just loved a look at one of Corbetts guns, to have both there is really something. More on the new rifle and originals on Shawn Joyce's blog; http://diizchesafari.blogspot.com/2016/02/sci-2016-john-rigby-co.html For those who like a great read google "Corbett" and man eaters of India for some great books.

What's on Your (not hunting or fishing related) Bucket List?
Dinsdale replied to wildcat junkie's topic in General Chit Chat
That'd be cool.... The electrics I built were rip off copies, mostly "B.C. Rich" designs that were popular at the time; did a pile of custom paint jobs for folks. I went as far as talking to several European old school trained Luthiers in NYC when I was doing cabinet installations there and had lots of free time, some really talented folks. Then the hunting thing came along, but I still think about having a crack at an acoustic sometimes. Too many things in my bucket to get to all of them. -
What's on Your (not hunting or fishing related) Bucket List?
Dinsdale replied to wildcat junkie's topic in General Chit Chat
Years ago I used to build electrics (necks are the hardest part)....sold a bunch to finance college books; always have wanted to try my hand at a acoustic from scratch. But I don't play, I'm musically challenged. In a similar vein, I had way more tied up in a registered Red Angus herd at one point than all this hunting crap I have. Guns and optics are cheap fun ;and you don't have to worry some puke is shooting a pellet rifle at a $5000 bull in a pasture for kicks. -
They are way ahead of you.... Oakley (and many others) sells interchangeable prescription shooting glasses with different colors based on use. Many clay shooters favor rose/vermilion tints. I have a hard time picking up movement and swear by yellow tint lenses that help with contrast and always hunt with that particular pair.

None. But like any lense, the cleaner and scratch free the clearer the site picture. Its like adding see through crappy plastic covers on a scope and expecting to see the same image quality. Its 2 more surfaces that degrade the image (Actually 4 with both sides)

I just happened to stumble across it thinking I would print some sort of form to mail, and a link was on the Leupold main page. Good company.....I'm sure they'll process stuff timely.
-
The 4w has the ballistic turret (and it works great) and for field shooting I would prefer twisting a preset elevation turret to the BRH's reticle for a longish shot.

I filed mine using the on-line option and received a tracking number. They sent an email notification about 2 1/2 weeks ago they were sending rebate, and it came last Friday. Bought scope later December I think?

Look around.... Leupold VX3 are discontinued in favor of the new VX3i. The new "i" is supposed to retail about $100 less....yes less....than the older model as Leupold claims eliminating some versions will reduce price across the board. 1....I think the "i" designation is stupid; as other major manufacturers use that to signify illuminated reticles. 2...they already outsourced glass to Asia and the scuttle at SHOT was they found a cheaper maker for grinding lenses. And we all now cheaper is better and you never get what you pay for. They had a $100 rebate on the old models through 12/31 last year (already received one) and I think if you shop around you will find old inventory at reduced pricing. (Camerland had some inventory listed the past several weeks)

So I take it Turnbull got the engraving right this time?

This years Maple Fest dates...thinking of pancakes and fresh syrup
Dinsdale replied to greg54's topic in General Chit Chat
Generally speaking sap to syrup is around 40:1....so 40 gallons of sap will get you 1 gallon of syrup. I'm doing good at 50:1, an early run will be even less at 60:1. My sugar content runs on the light side due to several factors; trees, soil, etc. Good info here; http://maple.dnr.cornell.edu/FAQ.htm -
A beagle? Uh. Poor Jenny. She can come stay at my place and get some peace and quiet.

They are a cool animal.... Got with in 75 yds over the top of a shooter billy after a stupid steep climb, but he was on a rock outcrop with several hundred yd drop below him, so left him. Would have been busted up when he fell. In the Pyrenees seen a good one and got to 200yds, but he was in and out of rocks with no shot and ran out of walkable terrain to set up for a shot and he walked out of sight. Seen a bunch of nannies with in 125 yds like the ones in the video a few times on both hunts. Maybe next time it'll all come together.

I've owned the 870 and a gas operated semi auto to shoot slugs. Bought the 220 a few years ago; damn accurate (Hornady SST's), its rifle origins allow a low scope mount and rifle like handling. Put a Aimpoint red dot on it with a EGW rail and it shoots better than it ought to for the price. Shop around, there are some good deals that come up on these. Did I mention its stupid accurate?

Have hunted Chamois twice now, and that young bird has been closer than I have to one. LOL That's some tumble they took.

Been so busy with work and have a hunting trip coming up in just a few months, haven't even given making syrup a thought. May have to skip tapping this year:<( -
Screw that..... Have a major addition to start on Feb 1 and a pile of windows and door replacements to do before that one starts. Dusting last night was enough for me. LOL

Thanks all for the comments. First time using this taxidermist, but have followed him a few years as he's gained a reputation of quality and quick turn around times(about 6 mos, which is very good for "exotic" game). Dennis Harris, The Artistry of Wildlife did the mount. We talked basic outline of what I wanted and let him work out the rest of the details. He did several mounts for me at the same time as this one. There's more than a few outfitters who have private property hunts where 4x4 vehicle access can get you up where Tahr like to hang out to make a stalk. I chose hunting on foot, but private land, where success rates do run higher. Still struck out on Chamois though, and hunting is never gauranteed. Day rates run very similar to Africa plains game that your familiar with, some is high fence, some free ranging like this Tahr. Flight is like the direct to J'berg......tediously long. Layovers is what kills me, some time at LAX and again at Auckland. But New Zealand was great and had a terrific time; would like to go again.
