  1. Nice! That'll look great on the wall.
  2. Mount is complete from this hunt;
  3. Hudson? The reason for the low graduation rate there is not because of hunting and fishing..... Unless shooting the rival drug dealer is hunting and fishing for a crack pipe counts. Should list City of Pougkeepsie as "redneck" too.
  4. Any taxidermist worth taking a trophy to can make what you want, that is a simple modification.
  5. Mmmm; thoughts of good wings and beef on weck'..... Make it the weekend of March 12/13th and I can be there.
  6. Not sure of the diet they have there, but fallow is outstanding tablefare where I have chewed on some local ones. Shot 2 chocolate colored some years ago on a trip and had it again last year when out on a hunt. That'll make a nice flatskin.
  7. Alex finally opened a proper showroom too! Thank god I don't live any closer, I spend enough there as it is now! I think that scope is around 15 oz's or so; he still has them, just bought one a few weeks ago for a stand rifle where a few ounces doesn't make a difference anyway. Wish they still made the 1.8-5.5x38.
  8. Deerthug hunts over that way.... Maybe he should pay this dude a visit and bring some NYC "friends" along.
  9. NRA is attempting to be a more proactive in hunting issues.... http://www.americanhunter.org/articles/2015/12/28/nra-hunters-leadership-forum-throws-social-media-punch-for-american-hunters/ I've never been a big NRA fan; I think the fact the won't use their own name connected to NY issues and hide behind NYSRPA is chicken $hit;but if they can pull off something that helps hunting issues I may have to change my stance.
  10. Owned a 256 Newton for a spell, first model 1916 gun. Shot a chuck and a grey fox with it IIRC; never did take it deer hunting. Sold it when times were a bit slow with work and needed some cash. Still have some headstamped brass and dies; at some point I would like to own another or a 300 Newton. Soft spot with the connection to growing up in Buffalo I guess. LOL
  11. Nice bear (!) If you are asking would I send someone out with a 243 for a big bear like in the pic; probably not. They have a bunch of fat on them that can plug up wounds. But like you have stated; I'm sure there are folks that would or have done it, just not my choice.
  12. Good thread here so far. FWIW..... Try some of the 165 gr's also and see if those are as accurate or better than 150's. Have taken close to 2 dozen critters in the 400-700 lb class; and bigger is better IMO.(Chambering would include; 270win,30-06,300RUM,375HH) A big fan of stiff contruction bullets and have had good results including shots from multiple angles. I get very few recoveries, I happen to like Swift Aframes and Trophy Bonded Bearclaws; but I did some volume culling on some smaller animals with a 243 and TSX's and they had excellent results. Loaded the 180grTSX in my 300 WBY and with now one animal down, I hope to use it for several hunts in the future; impressive stuff. I want 2 holes and be able to reach vitals from any position; and I want to break bones, preferably the offside leg if possible. Back to your first posts. I have two rifles I have 2 loads for (270win and 30-06), another with three ( 375 has a 300gr soft and 300gr solid to same point of impact and a Partition in 260gr with a second scope) . No big deal to work up 2 different loads if you want something softer for whitetails (and cheaper to plink with for chucks and targets). If grouping well, doesn't take more than 5 shots (or less) to get a scope zeroed, I use QD mounts and sometimes leave a second scope zeroed for another load. That extra scope always gets packed when travelling so with a few shots I could be back in business if required in case of a bad drop or accident to primary optic. Good luck on the hunt! Edit to add......Plenty of Elk have dropped to smaller calibers and the Partitions in all chamberings, good bullet. Most of the hunting I do involves a day rate and trophy fee; once that bullet leaves the muzzle, you own it. Positive blood trails, broken bones, and being able to possibly follow up very quickly make things just a little more stress free.
  13. I have glass that is less and a few that are more..... Use the Zeiss liquid cleaner or pre moistened wipes and can't say how many of those kits I have given away....$6 for the spray and a few of the wipes in a carry case. Swarovski instructs to run water strait from the tap to clean their stuff. I do that for all my binoculars to get grit out of the mechanisms; and as most of my scopes are QD, I run them also under the faucet. Have hunted some really dry enviroments with very fine sand, you can feel the grit in things after a day or two.
  14. Nice report! That's still a fine deer. (them Whitetails ain't too shabby either) Good luck with Elk and hope you post a report.
  15. That is a great deal..... Optics Planet had some decent discounts plus the rebate......even applied a bonus card I had for $50 on top of discounts. There's some good glass around right now for terrific pricing.
  16. Every Leupold dealer has the $100 off the VX3 line. Discontinuing early next year for a revamp. Try calling around some other dealers.
  17. I have "African Game Trails" by Roosevelt..... Cronicals a long safari(about a year in length) with his son Kermit, interesting read. Easy to find a used copy around.
