sunday hunting restriction in Western NY
jimbodwb replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in Deer Hunting
I understand now that the no alcohol before noon Sunday is a leftover blue law. I was saying that I had never heard it referred to as a blue law before. And the first amendment reads "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". That means that no law can be made using religious beliefs of any one religion because that could prohibit the free exercise of another religion or no religion at all. It is obvious that the blue laws were made because of the Sunday worship of Christianity and that is unconstitutional. I have no problem with people practicing any religion they want but I was just saying that I would hate to live in a time or place where the government restricts my actions based on religion. -

Wow, I never heard of Blue laws. They never taught anything about it in my school. I am glad they didn't also. They are the silliest things I have ever heard of. They are the complete opposite of the freedom from forced religious views that the constitution gives us. How were they ever allowed? I am glad I did not have to deal with them. I guess the no alcohol on Sunday's before noon thing would be like that. I always thought that was stupid. -
sunday hunting restriction in Western NY
jimbodwb replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in Deer Hunting
I had no idea that there were some states that don't allow hunting on Sundays. Why do they not allow hunting on Sunday? I have always hunted on Sundays in NY since I started hunting in 1991 but wztirem's post says it was not open till 1996. There were always plenty of other guys out there hunting too so were we all breaking the law? -
I have no problem with people being too lazy to do all the leg work themselves and have someone else put them on a good deer to shoot in a pen. It is nothing I would ever do. I am a hunter and that is not hunting. I have a buddy who used to raise buffalo in a pen. When he was out of meat he would go down to the pen and shoot one. He never called it hunting. I do have a problem with you having the audacity to use a disabled veteran as an argument for your cause though. I know a few disable veterans who love to hunt but need help. They hunt on private land where the owner brings them to the blind and that is it. Everything else is up to them. No fences, no pen raised deer, just wild free ranging deer. If people want to pay out the %$# to shoot something then go for it but do not ever, ever call it HUNTING. And one other thing, I find it very disheartening that you would take advantage of a disabled veteran who gave his all for the freedom of our country. To take money from someone like that is sickening. If you want to let them have the thrill of shooting a deer in their disabled state that is fine but you should not take money from them. That is lower than low! >

Larry, you can't spin the #'s. Your math is incorrect...kinda. 876 is 70% of 1245. And yes, 70% is 30% less than 100%. But that is not how you figure out an increase. You have to divide the DIFFERENCE of the 2 #'s by the original #. Burmjohn was correct in his calculation. I love how a simple debate on whether putting a restriction on what type of adult deer you can can shoot turned into math class. This is a great site and I am glad I found it. By the way, I am still sticking with my opinion that hunting is not all about the antlers and the current 3" on one side rule is just fine. I would never shoot a deer that small until the last day of the season because I would like to try to get a bigger body sized deer. But if that is my only chance of putting meat in the freezer (and ultimately that is what I am trying to do) bye bye unicorn!

I used to work for Verizon Wireless as a sales rep and if I had about 100 hours and unlimited writing space I still could not tell you all the horror stories I would hear from people who either have, or had Sprint. I would say that 40% of my new lines were switching from Sprint. Their coverage map is a joke. Their customer service is consistently ranked the lowest of the major carriers. There is a reason their unlimited plan is $30 less than Verizon...they need a gimmick to get people. I used to have sprint long ago and it doesn't seem like they have gotten any better. I would choose Verizon and pay a little more for the better service.

Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)
jimbodwb replied to TheHunter's topic in General Hunting
A seat belt saved my life on October 7th 1994. Lost control of my car and went sideways into a ditch and rolled over 4 times. Police officer told me that if I wasn't wearing my seat belt I would have been thrown from the car and my parents would be making funeral arrangements. I still broke my neck though so I can only imagine what it would have been like without the seat belt. It is just plain silly to say that a law that protects you and everyone around you is wrong. If you don't like being told to wear a seat belt then don't get in a car. And lets be serious here, how bad would it be if you had to wear BO. The deer can't see it. It is no different than full camo to them. These types of laws are made to protect people. Having a law that says you need to wear a seat belt or put on some BO is no different than speed limits. Do you think speed limits are wrong? Do you think you should be able to pass a school bus when it is stopped and picking up children? All these are the same as wearing a seat belt or BO. Safety. -
Yeah, that is what I originally thought and that is why we looked for so long. His dad went out the next day and still could not find any blood. I hope this big one he is seeing is him. I will know when I see him because he is embedded in my memory. I have never seen a deer that big in my life(which is probably why I missed him... can you say buck fever) and I remember how his main beams almost touched at the tips. Pretty cool looking.

17 years hunting and I hadn't lost one till last year...or so it seems. I took the shot but the deer never moved at first. He then turned and ran straight down the hill and across the road. My buddy and his father helped me look for 3 hours. Never found any blood but we did find a small tuft of white hair where he was standing. I think I missed but the shot felt good. This was on his dads farm and he did not see the deer again all year. He was a big 11 point and was at least 3 1/2 yo so I think he went nocturnal after that. He has seen a real big deer this summer that he thinks might be the same one. I still get that pain in the gut feeling whenever I think about it though.

I understand a little better now. I guess it would not be fair to those who could not get out to get their license early. And as for the Lifetime license holders, I think all lifetime license holders should get preference just for giving the state all that money at one time. I do not have a lifetime license but I sure do wish I had got it a few years ago when the doe tag was included with it. But how fair is it for someone to apply for 4 years in a row and get turned down 4 years in a row? If you get denied one year you should get it the next. A preference point should guarantee you a permit. I know guys who applied for the same WMU as I did and got a permit all 4 years I was denied. How is that fair?

I think the best way to see if hunters are for or against AR's is for the state to put a simple yes/no question when you get your license. Make it so the system will not print out the license until the question is answered. That way the state will get the opinion of all hunters. I am not a betting man but I would put my money on more hunters being against AR's. I know how I would vote. And Steve863, that was a great post and it really does say it all. The general population of non hunters would probably not take it too favorably if they thought that all hunters cared about was how big a rack a deer has. What's next, a squirrel's tail must be X-long or a rabbits ears must be X-long. How about beard restrictions or skull restrictions for bear. Don't shoot that coyote unless it is 20 inches at the shoulder. Sorry but that ducks bill is not long enough. Where will it end!

I have always wondered why it is not a first come first served for DMP's. I don't understand the logic behind the lottery. Every year the DEC has to try to give out 2nd chance DMP's in Nov. Wouldn't it make more sense to just hand all of the DMP's out right away. They set a number for each WMU so why not just hand them out to the first ones who apply for them? I got one this year but it is only the 3rd time in 17 years of hunting I have received one. I did not apply for the first 6 years but for the last 11 I have and only got 3. At one point I had 4 pref points before I got one. Can someone who knows the reason please explain this to me? Also, is there other states that do this or is it just NY?

What I find to be amusing is that AR stands for "Antler RESTRICTION" yet from what I have read on most hunting forum sites is that most people are totally against any form of government restrictions but completely in favor of AR's. Wouldn't that make them hypocrites. I guess restrictions are OK if they benefit your personal agenda but not good for the general population. The goal of hunting is to reduce the herd #'s so the streets are not overrun with wild animals. Sure I like to shoot a bigger deer but I have seen some real big spikes, forks, and even does. Last year I saw 3 bucks in a field and the 2 fork horns were both bigger than the 6 point that was with them. According to AR logic, if they were in range which they were not, I would have to shoot the smallest of the 3 for it to be legal. How does this make any sense. AR's do not work and are not fair to the everyday hunter. I know the argument I will get is "how is it fair for the hunter that wants to shoot a big racked deer if another hunter can shoot it when it is still small". The reason it is fair is because that is a personal choice to only want to shoot big racked deer and you legally can do that without AR's but for the hunter that just wants to enjoy their time in the field and hopefully get a shot at any deer would not have the choice if there were AR's in place and that is not fair.

Well said. I remember when I was younger (16-20years old or so) not being able to sleep the night before opening day. Getting out of bed at 3am and going outside to feel the chill in the air and almost burst with excitement. I used to watch the fields and sides of the road as we drove to our pulloff just hoping to see eyes. Getting to our pulloff and jump out of the truck just to go and talk to my uncles and cousins. Everybody talking about where they have been seeing sign and what their plans were for the day. Walking a mile or so back into the woods in the pitch black and shaking with excitement in hopes of just even seeing a deer. We did not care if we shot a deer that day or any day. We did not care if one of the other guys shot a deer and we did not. We were just happy to be out there. I remember seeing a guy dragging a big 8 point up the trail on the state land and I got out of my blind, packed up my stuff and helped him drag it all the way to his truck. I did not know who this guy was and it didn't matter because I got to see a nice big deer down. I was not jealous of him I was happy for him. This to me is the basic ideals and traditions that made hunting what it was to me.

I stand hunt and I still hunt. Some areas I hunt have briars and some areas have water. I know it is hard to get 1 pair for all situations but I think I am going to go with the bibs from Wally world. Decent price and they seem warm enough and they are water proof. I like the zipper pockets also. Thanks for all the help guys. Good luck to everyone this season.
-
I saw a pair of insulated bibs there for $67. I was not sure how good they are though. $29 ones I think were lightweight. I never used bibs so I am not sure how good they are. Seems like they would let in a draft. Do you think the insulated ones would be good enough for cold NY weather?

I hunt the northern and southern zone gun seasons and I need a new pair of hunting pants. I have not bought hunting pants in over 15 years. Can anyone suggest a good pair. Preferably under $100

I have read many different forums, articles in magazines, and even some books on AR's. No where in any of these have I seen anyone show valid scientific proof that letting small antlered deer get bigger antlers will help the overall health of a deer herd. In NYS you can see a 3 1/2 yo buck with small antlers that would not allow you to shoot it under AR. But then you could see a 1 1/2 yo buck with big enough antlers to shoot. How is this letting the smaller younger deer walk. Antlers are not a good judge of age and the only argument I ever hear about AR's is that it helps the younger deer get older which is supposed to help the deer herd. Also, AR would be another one of these Government restrictions it seems most hunters are against at all cost. I am not one of these hunters that are afraid of Govt restrictions if they make sense by the way. The problem is, AR's do not make sense in any way.

Hey Bubba, your seat belt argument is kinda weak. All states except New Hampshire have seat belt laws. http://www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo/laws/seatbelt_laws.html But I do have to agree with you in saying if it is gonna be mandatory in one season, then it should be mandatory in all seasons or none. It needs to be a uniform law or no law at all. I will always wear a seat belt in a car, helmet while riding a motorcycle, and Blaze Orange while in the woods during any hunting season. Remember, small game season is going on during bow hunting season so there is guns in the woods while bow hunting. -
Hey solon, I have a box of .303 that I posted in the items for sale section. send me a message if ya want em.

Just east of RT7 past the Tomhannock Reservoir going toward Vermont on Tamarac Rd is Pittstown State forest and a few miles further up RT7 is Tibbetts state forest. Also if you like northern zone, about 45 minutes north of Albany in Saratoga county is the Lake Desolation area. Lots of state land up there on Lake Desolation rd in the town of Greenfield. I used to have a lease up there until Finch Pruyn sold all their land to the Nature Conservancy. Now its all open to the public.

My dad and I do something sort of like a drive but just with the 2 of us. We will sit on stand till a certain time and then one of us will radio the other on our two-way and say I am coming to your stand. I am going to walk to here and then there and then to you from this direction and see if I can push anything towards you. We always wear orange and we never shoot in the direction we know the other is coming. This was also only conducted on our hunting lease and we knew where our other relatives were on the property.

I wear an orange vest and hat whenever walking through the woods whether on public or private land. I guess I am just like Jim W seeing he taught me most of what I know about hunting. I also hang up my vest on one side of me and my hat on the other so other hunters can see me from any direction. My hunting coat is reversible so if I am on state land I always have the orange side out but if I am on private land I will wear the camo side out and just wear the orange vest while moving. I personally would not care if it was mandatory to wear blaze orange but unfortunately this states lawmakers would probably screw it up so bad we would not be allowed to wear any camo and our guns would have to painted blaze orange also. -
Thanks Dakota Dog. I have been looking at the state land in Brookfield but I did not know if it was any good. I will have to check it out. The land in Rome I did not know about. I will have to look it up on the DEC maps.
