  1. I just picked 6 pods and brought them home last Sunday. I slit it open and placed on the oven rack at 190 and dried them out. They are not ready on their own. Love them. I also use thread hanging from my stabilizer as well.

  2. Exeter state forest is due south of herkimer right near richfield springs. Lots of rolling hills and ag land in that area, probably a good spot.... might check it out myself lol

Yes Exeter has a few state forests around it. Actually it's on RT 51 south of West Winfield. Take 28 south to Rt 20 west to Rt 51 south.

  3. I'm from the area originally... IT's Herkimer. Regarding your ? Look on a one of the many internet map sources and you may see some state land but I would suggest he ride around the area. Introduce himself as a avid hunter going to HCCC looking for permission for just him to bow hunt. He may find a farmer willing to let him hunt.

Go to google maps and find Herkimer. There are a few State Forests within a 3--40 min ride.

  4. I do need to experiment more with my arrow setup... but for this season I'd hate to start all over when I have it shooting aces.

I agree too late for this season. Worth playing around with though.

  5. I know this is not really related to your question but if this is to be used for deer the arrow weight is on the light side. At the least, your total arrow weight should be over 400 with a FOC of 12% - 15%. I'd be concerned about the bows kinetic energy then FPS. Just some info for and it's just my opinion.

  6. I think you need to clarify this. If I am still hunting or walking from stand to stand then yes. Or like the one poster said. if he often see deer when approaching a certain stand. Otherwise no. If I'm walking back to the 4 wheeler than no. I hunt using my 4 wheeler so I ride out into the area, mostly field edges, I am hunting and then several hundred yards or less sometime I walk in from there.

  7. I'm all about trying to be scent free... keep my outer scent free camo coverall suit in the zip bags, spray down boots and lower legs before my walk in, etc. But as most of us here have said they think deer can still smell us. Therefore if the smell of the horse (which probably smells like deer) is stronger then the human scent it may help. Like someone said as long as we wash the outer covers and under clothes weekly to get rid of our human scent it may be worth a try.

I'm gonna try it tomorrow morning and go hang it tonight.

  8. I have 2 horses, both geldings. They eat the same as deer do when turned out and when inside in their stalls they eat hay... the same grasses, clover, alfalfa, etc as deer only it's dried and the only other thing they have is 1/2 coffee can of grain twice a day plus fresh water. I was thinking rather than go thru all the pain of keeping my clothes scent proof that I just wash it with scent free detergent every other week depending how often I hunt but leave it hung the horse barn. I don't think it would spook deer.

    What do you think?

  9. Im going out rain or shine, bucks wont stop moving because it sprinkling

I'm not talking sprinkling... ya know it's gonna RAIN... you're gonna need your rain gear and tree umbrella. If the doppler shows a heavy cloud formation of rain that's what talking about.

Also I'm talking bow hunting not rifle/gun where you can shoot out a couple hundred yards sometimes.

I went out this morning as planned. Saw 2 eyes just inside the woods (don't know what) with my green light hat light and no rain at that time 6:15. Got in the ladder stand on the corn field edge and about 7:30 the wind picked up and it began and rained pretty hard for about an hour. Saw nothing.

  10. After I got home, my wife thought that the car smelled (due to the earth scent) and promptly, without telling me, added some potpourri to the truck.

This morning I get in the truck at 4;30am for my second day and I smell the stuff. All my efforts to control scent and now I am driving in a car that smells like a perfume factory. I opened the windows and sprayed down with the scent control before going in the woods.

OMG... read this to my wife and were both ROTFL. Exactlt like something she would do. She said I like that women and I don't even know her.

  11. My son has a M77 in .243... excellent rifle. When new, the action was a little catchy but after sitting watching TV and just opening and closing with a light spray of oil in it, the action smoothed out. If yours is used it may be fine.

  12. Delaware County in the Catskills is great for a rural lifestyle. It's the least densely populated county in NY State. Lots of dairy farms, medical facilities and home improvement jobs and as a former Marine, you can apply for civil service jobs and get preference on the hiring lists. There are a couple of hospitals here that are always looking to hire nurses as well. I live outside of Delhi NY and love it. Real cheap to live here and rents are low too. There is also SUNY Delhi College here and they are looking for carpenters, locksmiths and plumbers. Check it out.

I would agree with Delaware County as well as Otsego County. Another area would be Ithaca/Cortland area. Probably Rochester is the best city area to live near.
  13. I had this 15' ladder stand in an old apple orchard. It was a beautiful spot where i could see deer approaching out to 50 to 60 yards before the heavy snow that hit in early November 2008. I took my first bow buck there in 2007.

The heavy snow either snapped off or tipped over all the taller apple trees and since then I'm lucky to be able to see 25 yards in any one direction. I did take an open up a lane in front of me out to 25 yards but other than that it's a difficult hunt but the deer are always in there.

  14. Ya know Bill... I told my then 16 yo son about mid season 2010 that I have always heard that big mature bucks move in the middle of the day. So he said "oh OK I'll go too".

Sure enough 30 minutes after I was in the stand a real nice 8 walks out of the woods behind me and along the edge through some slash trees. I call my son and real quietly tell him a big 8 is coming his way. About 5 minutes later the same big 8 walks down between us and just stands in the thick snort wheezing. He never did get a shot either but it did prove the point to him that mature bucks do move mid day. It's warmer too.
