Similar thing happened to me this year. My brother and i were sitting in stand where we had seen the big buck the afternoon before and this 1 1/2 old 7 pt came walking out at 200 yards and kept acting weird. We watched him for about an hour before we could confirm he was wounded, so i then put one through his heart the next chance we got, have the whole thing on video to. He had been shot by a slug when he was running away by someone who wont be named (we found out who it was) and was missing quite alot of his hind quarter. DEC came and gave me replacement tag the same day. Good thing because the 140" came by at 830 the next morning

I have taken several does with head/ neck shots under 150 yards with bipod. To avoid the jaw shot i only take the shot with the deer straight on. Shoot low and still take them through the neck and spine. I have always dropped them right where they stand without problem

2012 Gun Hunting Harvest Thread
Bballhunter11 replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Well here is my addition, Headed out to the stand with my cousin knowing that this buck was in the immediate area and with the intention of only shooting him as we had an encounter with him two days ago but with no shot. We were hoping to get the hunt on video but things happened to fast, we were sitting in stand on a small patch of woods just off a field and had not seen a deer all morning and knew he was on a doe the night before so may of been bedded down and hanging tight. Just about 8am i head some leaves crunching right in front of us and all i saw was a huge deer with a huge rack trotting trough the woods about 70 yards away and he was on a mission. I wispered to my cousin huge buck huge buck as i put the scope on him. He then stopped and looked towards us and right before my cousin was about to say just shoot him because the camera wasnt on or even towards him i fired and he kicked and tore off. We were both so pumped standing in our stands and were about positive i put a solid shot on him we were shaking in the stand. This was by far the biggest buck either of us had seen in the woods. We got down and found where i hit him and had really good blood and found him piled up about 60 yards away. He grossed 144 1/2" with a 20 3/4" inside spread.- 63 replies

Im starting to look for a new/newer bow for next year after shooting some of my friends new bows. i have been leaning towards the Prime line by G5 and was wondering if anyone has any experience with these bows? I will be shooting them after season is over here to get a feel for them but just looking for some quick reviews.

Remington 700 in 30-06 handloaded 180gr Nosler Ballistic tips or Marlin 1895 45/70 with handloaded 325 gr Hornady leverevolution

There are known populations in Cortland and St Johnsville, I live close to there and was wondering if it was wild or an escapee

Agreed, i dont understand the small increase in performance of the WSMs even remotely compensates for large jump in ammo price and the difficulty to find ammo. You can get 30-06/ 270/ 308 anywhere in the US/ Canada that sells any type of ammo. Good luck finding a WSM cartridge for sale. 7mm-08 is becoming more and more popular and im not sure on the 260 twin.

Also agreeing with WNY again off load hipoint and buy some nice glass or a second gun haha no need for that thing to sit in the safe and look ugly

Thats a little bit of a tall order but ill throw my opinion in. I agree with your ar-15 points, fun to shoot, cheaper ammo and customizable. i also hunt a lot of woodchucks so thats what i use my 223 for and agreed that its a little on light side for deer. So like WNY said build one in 6.8, 300 whisper 30 Remington or 300 ACC and you have a great platform for anything in the deer woods. As far as a bolt gun, Remington 700 is a great rifle and i agree that your caliber choices are a little on the heavy side but they will definately work. Not sure what you currently have in the arsenal but why not go with a 308, 30-06 or 7mm-08 then, little easier on the shoulder and wallet and the animal is still dead as dead gets. I use 2 Remington 700s in 30-06 and 7mm-08 and love them both for deer and elk. And as far as a nice trap gun, well if your going to use it every thursday it better be nice so buy something that you like the best and shoot away.

So curious why did you choose the base line 770 over the 700? Had a similar problem with a Marlin (remington) i bought this summer, 700 dollar gun and it wouldnt feed out of the magazine come to find out the forearm was cracked and took 2 months to get it replaced. The problem with introductory guns is they are just that, put out as fast as possible.

We use 4 spypoint IR-6 on our property and are very happy with them, especially when compared to similar stealth cams and wildgame alternatives.

Worth a quick read
Bballhunter11 replied to Bballhunter11's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I am in very much in agreement with the past two statements guys haha. Was hoping to generate some interest for the petition on here due to it being outdoor access related and the financial bottom line in addition to that. -
Apparently NYS is involved in the acquisition of 80,000 acres but is currently purchasing it as a forever wild property which in the long term is not very useful to sportsman and much much more expensive. Might be worth getting some signatures and attempting to work some common sense into the government involved. http://www.change.org/petitions/governor-new-york-state-change-the-finch-land-acquisition-to-a-conservation-easement-purchase

Well i finally got to put some shells together and test them on paper. Fired off a bipod at 100 yards with 10-15 mph winds moving right to left. 55 gr Nosler Varmageddon over 23 gr IMR 4064 are the two groups. With one 60 gr Nosler Ballistic tip over 23 gr 4064 in the top left where point of aim was. They seem to have preformed pretty well for the price of 33.00 for 250

I've seen this before but still funny, thanks eddie

We have a savage axis in 7-08 does pretty well for the money invested, i prefer the mossberg or marlin rifles for just a little more but either way none are bad rifles
-
Would agree that the 7-08 is a better round in most cases and also has the opportunity to move up in game size where the 243 is pretty much at its peak with deer. My brother killed a elk in colorado with his 7-08 this winter loaded with 160 gr Nosler Accubonds over IMR 4895

Yea thats the only disadvantage i have found on this rest but like u said apache has the same issue but is probably louder when drawing

Split i have been using the Ripcord Code red for a couple years now and have not had a single problem with it yet and its quite and holds the arrow quite well when your moving it around the stand and drawing
