  1. I think the difference between food plots and mineral locations is the proximity of deer to each other. The chances of spreading disease increase dramatically if you are feeding deer via bait or mineral since they can be abnormally close to each other.
  2. I believe it has a lot to do with the Adirondack's and the difference in terrain.
  3. I bought a single floating pin site for the same reason this year - I figure that if I am comfortable at 25 yards I may not ever need to adjust the pin. I figure if a deer that's worth shooting is outside 40 yards, I'll have some time to decide on if I even want to shoot that deer.
  4. It's really just unrealistic what everyone is doing these days. There is a lot to it and you never see the work that goes into it. I'm going to put together a document of all the advice everyone had and hand it out to my guys and tell them this is what you need to keep in mind while your filming this year. Build a story, whether positive or negative, just build a story that people can relate to.
  5. Looks good Hoyt - the quality of the WI IR pictures impressed me.
  6. Seven years ago is ahead of the game for sure. We're trying it as it has become popular and during a touchy economy - lots of people are into filming these days. I just sent you a private message.
  7. Wow that's a starter list!? Crazy! I'll definitely compile all these together and keep it in mind next year when we pursue a show. Sounds like you are most interested in the entire story of hunting from start to finish.
  8. Thanks for the kind words. We expanded our Pro-Staff this year since we're just starting out so we have guys all over the place. Several in the Brookfield area and a few from Jamestown. My partner and I hunt in and around Rochester as well as the Gouverneur/Canton region.
  9. For this month's video journal we are doing a Pro-Staff introduction. Everyone was intructed to do a 1-2 minute intro about what they have been doing this summer with the footage to back it up. I think this is in line with what you are interested in John.
  10. We have a few team members from the Brookfield area - PM me if you're interested and maybe I can get you some information.
  11. From what I gathered here, everyone has their opinion about hunting shows. It looks like a lot of people are fed up with the unrealistic nature of the shows. Starting with poor shot angles and ending with big 170"+ bucks (which is unrealistic for most of us in NYS). A lof of these we've identified as issues as we start thinking about doing a show, but I'm curious...what would everyone like to see in hunting shows now?
  12. Looks good Mike - good luck during the season!
  13. Hello Everyone - I had some time to work with John recently and really like the idea of this forum. At Venatic Outdoors, we are trying to promote New York State and its abundant outdoor opportunities. I feel like this forum captures the same ideals and gives fellow New Yorkers an opportunity to share with each other - something that we all desire. I look forward to learning/meeting and sharing with everyone, and hopefully I can teach others some things as well. If you have some time, please visit our web site - http://www.venaticoutdoors.com. We'll have a new Video Journal coming out in a couple weeks (those are posted on the home page) and expect to introduce our first DVD this January! Good Hunting!!
  14. I think the NZ season opener is timed well. I think the problem that some people have with it is the lengthy gun season. Generally, there are only two weeks of archery season followed by a week of muzzleloader and seven-eight weeks of rifle season. This segment of the season is way too long - if archery went into the rut as it does in the Southern Zone I think you would see deer populations rebound and a more abundant buck population. In our area, deer learn to not even enter a field if they want to survive.
  15. Never heard of pumpkin seed but I am curious - why did you add this to your mixture?
  16. North of Watertown, we've found that nothing attracts like clover. We've had success with corn as well - brassicas seem to be hit very late though. This year we've opted for cereal grains - I'll make sure you keep you posted on our success!
  17. Rye can germinate down to 36 degrees F and grows relatively quickly - you would be better off planting something like this. Buckwheat is generally treated as a cover crop in the spring/summer months to improve soil conditions. Also, in terms of attractiveness of cereal grains they are as follows : Oats, Winter Wheat, Winter Rye. Oats are not winter hardy at all and they increase in frost tolerance down the line with Rye being the most. On the flip side, Oats are the sweetest and are considered candy to deer.
