  1. Great videos - I love watching regular guys out there filming. Sometimes I'll sit on youtube for hours browsing "New York Hunting."
  2. Love to shoot out at that distance - it makes you better up close. I've never shot a deer over 20 yards though.
  3. If you like expandables, $19.99 for three at Bass Pro - one of the best broadheads by review around. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_10206975_999043030_450000000_999043028?cmCat=CROSSSELL_THUMBNAIL
  4. What did you plant in your food plot? The deer seem to have taken a liking to it.
  5. Yea you either love them or hate them - it depends on if you've been burned before I guess. I think that goes for all broadheads though - I've had poor success with some brands before. They are not barbed because the blades are on a free swinging pivot and would flip up when you pulled them out.
  6. Do you usually hunt 'yote's after deer season?
  7. I've read a lot of poor reviews on the rage but some people have great results. If you haven't seen it, I would consider the Redhead Gator XPs - they used to be manufactured by Rocky Mountain before Rage bought them out. 2" cutting diameter and get better online reviews than the rage - also rear deploy but in a slightly different manner.
  8. Those are great videos and stories. We have not had a problem since last year but poacher's do not usually funnel out of the woodword until mid September in our area. The fields are no longer cut along the road, which keeps deer from feeding in them (instead they hit our food plots) and gives them additional cover. We'll see how that, coupled with the high voltage fence, treats people. I'm sure they won't care but who knows. Anything to make it difficult on them.
  9. The did decoy the field but at that point I think the poachers knew the DEC was patrolling our land. They didn't catch anyone, but it's really cool to hear about how they set up these sting operations. They went over it all with us.
  10. Just out of curiosity - what is everyone using for broadheads this year? I have my own opinions and preferences, but what are others? Could make for a good discussion...
  11. I would be prepared to take shots outside 40 yards in the west - anything under that is not logical in the wooded areas of NY.
  12. Yes - the high school kids last year were running a contest. Rumors were flying around about the 10 point they shot on our property (one field is very visible from the road). Two weeks later they shot a 4 point, but never took the time to take a picture. So, they came back the next day while my Dad was there and asked him if they could go see the buck that was shot. That was a red flag, since you couldn't really see the carcass well from the road and it was not clear that it was a buck. They got a nice visit from the DEC after that.
  13. The stand looks great. The wood may not be worn by the time the season comes, so some gray spray paint could have helped during the building process.
  14. We have a serious problem with poachers and have had a hard time getting it under control. Up in northern NY, land is very remote and there aren't very many deer. So, when you have deer in your fiels everyone knows. Over the years we've had two 10 points jacked, a couple small bucks, and one doe that I know of. We got in contact with the DEC and they keep a pretty close eye on our land. We also asked the farmer to stop cutting the fields so that deer would have protection if necessary. Plus, they would be less likely to be in the field to feed and would spend more time in our food plots. But, the funniest thing we did, we put up a very aggressive barbed wire fence that spans 800 yards. In three different locations we put up electrical box's and hooked them to the fence to look like they had electricity flowing to them. All the sudden, everyone's asking us how we got electricity to the fence! Hopefully the long grass and electric fence keeps people from shooting from their cars. Most of them need pictures of the deer because they actually have contests up there for the biggest jacked buck.
  15. You can kick them off the roost too - they will come back to that area. It helps to kee kee yelp or kee kee run softly to gain their attention, but I like to imitate the sounds of the other birds.
  16. Careful you don't come into the path of the four point - he looks mean!
  17. Actually we do! We had a deer jacked last year the first week in October, 150 yards off the road in the middle of a field very visible from the road, and at 12:30pm there were three coyotes on the carcass. Actually, the DEC officer was hanging out with my Dad when they were there. That seemed a little odd to me - I'm pretty confident I've identified a few den locations as well. Do you hunt or trap?
  18. Isn't there a statistic for the average archery shot needed to harvest a deer? I feel like it's 12 or 16 yards but I'm not entirely sure.
  19. I have a camp in Gouverneur and my partner has property in Canton.
  20. If you get out of the park and head into dairy country you can see tons of deer. We have a camp in Gouverneur and started planting food plots three years ago - last year there were a few times I went out and saw 15 deer a day which, for that area, is unheard of. My buddy has a camp in Lisbon which is dairy land (several farms with 2,000+ head) and he'll see 100+ deer in the corn fields during the winter.
  21. If you're hunting in the woods good luck with that!
  22. Love to see the hard horn pictures - that means the season is so close.
