  4. I am going back a bit but a Nassau County hunting association used to put on a demonstration some where in Hempstead LI. just before opening day they would get a deer from the DEC for this.Try doing some searches google etc. Sorry I dont have more info.
  5. An old timer in my club would put the liver in a pot of salt water for a day or so.As far as (gamey taste Define) =having the flavor or odor of game or other meat kept uncooked until slightly tainted: The roast was still edible but was slightly gamy So if the meat was not handled well or over aged.Hanging a deer for a couple days below 40oF should not cause a gamey taste. We always hung deer with head down to butcher.JW
  6. I disagree there is enough of them on the web, keep it related to NY Hunting, that's why I come here .JMHO John
  7. I have hunted the Catskill park in the frost valley area and taken deer. Only one road goes through it, one side is a small river the other side is steep mountain terrain. The YMCA there has lodging and a hunting club, there are trail head parking areas. Its a wild forever area .See map link below. http://maps.google.com/maps?rlz=1T4HPNN_enUS310US248&q=Frost+valley+new+york&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wl
  8. I used a friends that was up all season and it produced.Bring a 3 of 4 foot 3 inch log in for a steady rest so you can shoot a rifle across your forearm.Always shoot from a rest is the best advice I can give.JW
  9. The areas of Liberty and Grahamsville are many miles apart each hold deer Gramsville to the south Liberty being to the north.JW

Not hard to believe as a moose was sited in Beacon NY recently.JW
  11. Has any one hunted up there recently?I hunted years back just east passed the YMCA ,a relative had a house next to state land that they sold.It was tough getting up that mountain without getting scented but standing at the bottom took a couple.I often thought about joining the club the Y has.JW
  12. Did you ever hunt up off of Forest Glen Rd off rte 52?My old camp was at the left side end of the road I could walk across the road go up the hill and be at my stand in 10 minutes.I guess its all been developed in there now??Wish I'd never sold that cabin.JW
  13. A 30-06 in pump rather than a semi would be my choice,if he ever wants to hunt in PA.Had a rem 1700 pump with scope was dead on and faster reload than a bolt.Only wish I'd got the carbine rather than the rifle,JMHO JW
  14. Just saw this on the ABC 5 PM Eye Witness New.A moose was sited near Beacon NY in Duchess county.John
  15. Heavy duty chrome units mount on a steel bumper, was used on a motor home, should work well on a pickup truck, beach buggy, older car or improvise off a trailer mount for Dirt bike, scooter, small motor bike, motorcycle. The two oval loops measure 19 3/4W,x4"x41/2"deep.Asking $55 ,my e mail is [email protected] Thanks John

  18. Yes Quality but that was part of a food business name. After my electronic calibration and repair work at Grumman with the ever changing state of the art in electronics I started in the food business rather than go back for more schooling.Besides folks never stop eating.Go figure lol
  19. I would check every gun I will use just before the season starts and also buy a new box of ammo at least every other year I will probably get feed back on the last but for peace of mind I did.John
  20. We hunted small game in the early 50s when I first got my license and 1st shotgun, there were large estates with wooded areas on the north shore, now many of them have been subdivided and built upon sad to say.
  21. Doc wrote "So when you talk about "free time", I recognize just how valuable that can be." I am retired now but in my youth i worked on the Apolo program at Grumman we built the lunar lander (LEM)and 7 day weeks were not uncommon so I can Ditto that .John
  22. The 870 12 Ga was a wise choice its a tried and true gun.As far as field dressing check around your area lots of organizations have demonstrations before season starts and I bet you can find them on Youtube or other web sites. Each season you will need new items the day after season ends stores like Dicks sell things 50% or less off.A real hunters learning curve never ends.Good Luck to Ya.John
  23. I actually did that before I retired I would make it a 4 day work week leave right from work and get up to my club on Thursday nite. John \\
