I now go for a "high shoulder" shot which has proven to drop them in their tracks....I used to do the heart boiler room shot...most of my deer....I have seen too many deer to count that have had the heart destroyed and run 50-150yds....dead as a door nail but they take off heading for the state line. In better than 25 yrs of hunting heart shot....last 3 seasons I changed to high shoulder and haven't seen one go more than 10 yds with most not going anywhere...shot a rutted up 21" inside spread. 8 ptr high shoulder and he dropped in his tracks...not a kick...instantaneous

That deer is obviously suffering from something other than a lack of food. Whether it be CWD or EHD he's on his last legs. Don't think food is going to help that guy, a lead or carbon injection is probably only thing that will put the guy out of his misery.

NOW I understand the Velvet buck thread......lol....

I'm with the others on the Slick Tricks love the field point accuracy as well as the results on a deer...way too many new gimmicks produced these days

I am pretty sure that breeding does will continue to come into estrous every 28 days until she is bred....as far as bucks needing antlers to procreate....I do not know....but come on guys...even if we aren't in the mood it doesn't take much pressure to get us in the mood....I gotta assume a buck as a male wouldn't be too far off....lol

I agree with most of the previous posts but am a fan of the managed recoil loads...Mainly for hunting age kids...I have made this recommendation to a number of friends who wanted a caliber with not so much kick for their growing children....yrs down the road ...many have said thanks for the advice cause they didn't have to buy a new gun for their now man sized 16+ yr old kids.I started hunting @ age 10 with a trusty old 30-30 Model 94...using 125 gr loads for the lessened recoil...worked like a champ and killed 6 deer ... Then I got a .243 @ 14 and thought I was the man with a scoped bolt action....not much kick so great for a 14-15 yr old...as I hit 18+ I longed for a manly caliber cause I wanted to fit in with the guys using the bigger calibers....unfortunately bastard thieves relieved us of our firearms so the old guns went away....I now hunt with a .308 but also own a .243 as well cause it is a great hunting hunting caliber...but me likes the knockdown of the .308

That's like a Crocodile Dundee spike.....whoa.... Freak of nature...In the mid to late 80's in NC I have personally seen better than. 6....4.5 yr old spikes...jawbone aging by state biologists ...they were heavy duty but nowhere close to that one...these things were the product of poor genetics, poor habitat and overpopulation..2.5 yo spikes were common. They got smart started managing the herd through taking of does....it was buck only the entire season except a day or two thanksgiving & Christmas .before the management started ...place went from a good place to kill a small buck to a good place to kill a wall hanger...no changes in natural forage or addition of food plots just the thinning of herd....good thing the whitetail hunting world has changed in the past 30 yrs

I am also not aware of any literature regarding repercussions of baiting in NC. Obviously the lack of literature on the subject would more than likely mean that it doesn't seem to burden the herd. NC DNR has done a remarkable job in the last 15 yrs of improving the quality of the herd. This has been through educating the hunting populations and these populations buying into QDMA principles. The number of quality bucks in the past 10yrs has skyrocketed, although it's not attributed to feeding. CWD & EHD have been reported within the state, yet with all the congregation via supplemental feeding, it has not spread or decimated any populations. I will completely agree that comparison of NC vs NY herds is like comparing Granny Smith to Macintosh apples...they are different sub species and very different climates. Again CWD & EHD have been reported and confirmed within the state so that should be comparing red apples to red apples regarding disease transmission related to communal feeding locations. There is no evidence of an increase of disease. As far as defense of the supplemental feeding and diverting of the thread...the name of the thread is " Feeding Deer" and the discussion revolves around the supplemental feeding of game and the horrors it creates due to rumen acidosis. I simply reported my experience with the feeding of game as witnessed over 20+ yrs. As we all have our opinions, if rumen acidosis is valid...other than "extremely rare" cases then states that allow feeding would have gorged animals dying all over the place. There are a number of northern latitude and cold states that allow feeding and have healthy herd. You wont see me starting any Pro Feeding petitions or making bumper stickers, I will comply with the local game laws and just hunt, however being that it is legal in NC I took advantage of the law in an attempt to gain an advantage. If it became legal in NY I would gander that 85% of the detractors would gladly jump on the feed train in attempt to gain an advantage....so no attempt to divert or promote feeding.....just observations from past experiences.

I agree with growalot on the food plots as opposed to supplemental feeding. With that said it requires a special set of circumstances to have good plots...you need cleared land, access to equipment, know how, the time and money to invest. I lived in NC where baiting is allowed on Private land only....there is nothing detrimental to the herd as a result, despite the detractors....CWD ,EHD conspiracy theorists. Baiting has been legal for as long as I know...this is not some magical feed pile that the deer just show up to and commit suicide. Many get the idea that have a corn pile(that's what us rednecks call them) and the deer will just come stand in it and wait for you to harvest. The supplemental food source is just like any other natural food source in the respect that they will come to it. They also abandon them when acorns start dropping or a food plot has come alive. Killing a big buck on a corn pile is a rare event....it happens but typically the daytime visitors are does and small bucks. I mainly used them starting before bow season through the end of the season to condition the deer to the food source and keep the does visiting during and after the rut. Doing this is a lot time,$$$ & effort....just for catching an opportunity @ a shooter buck passing through either scent checking or trailing a doe....I do love it for the trail cams though....cause big boys will visit @ night and you get a buck inventory in the vicinity....ok so all that wind bag info to say I have no issue with baiting

Proud Redneck here...but plenty of rednecks in NY...your in good whitetail area..... Counties north,& northwest of Raleigh are best in state...Person County is #1 so your in the middle of it. A lot of hunting clubs run dogs for deer...or property is subject to be over run by a pack of hunting dogs at some time or another...dog hunting is not my cup of tea and I have always been a still/stand hunter. But there are plenty of places to hunt where you won't see deer dogs in an entire season. If you had to hunt public land...Jordan Lake , Sherron Harris gamelands can produce nice bucks with enough work..Duke Forest is also supposedly packed with deer and by special permit only, it's worth investigating. Plenty of deer...good luck -

We just traded places....I went from NC to NY.....depending where you are in NC ...you could be in for some good hunting -
culver units are psi. There is tons of info online as the .308 vs 7.62 question is a very common one. You might try AR/Black Rifle/Mil Rifle type sites as they are the one usually discussing it most.

It is still Bars, Tattoo shops and pawn shops.....

Culver...from what I know the headspace is different between the .308 & 7.62....I know from being around shooters, not hobbyists using Mil Spec rifles that they would never shoot .308 out of a 7.62 Mil Spec rifle...as far as barrel pressures .308 is rated to 62,000 & 7.62 ...50,000
-
Culver I agree that it can be used in any .308 chambered rifle but whatever is stamped on the barrel of the gun is what you should go with....guessing that 99+% of Mil Spec rifles are stamped 7.62 and 99+% of hunting rifles are stamped .308. Some of the cheaper military ammo has laquer coating and has been known to gum up receivers. The OP wasn't clear on whether they intended on using as a game round so enter my .02. I don't have any documentation that says you cant and the .308 is a hotter round than the 7.62.....I know that it is not recommended to use .308 in a 7.62 stamped barrel
-
Fayetteville....Based on your profile pic I m guessing you've spent some time in Jacksonville
-
Examine the bore....with adequate light or a bore light. You do not want to see any pitting or corrosion in the barrel. Mechanical function ...all parts are functioning smoothly...if the gun was properly maintained and taken care of then it should be good to go 30-30 has probably killed more deer than any other round out there...so good luck
-
not saying you cant but DO NOT USE 7.62 Mil Spec ammo in your hunting rifle...its made for Mil Spec rifles....for one its FMJ..Full Metal Jacket You want .308 Win ammo....there are options galore for hunting loads. My personal favorite is the 150 grain nosler partition, but they are a little pricey. Rem Core Loc is a tried and true hunting round on the cheaper end of the spectrum.
