  1. Being that I am just starting to get back into waterfowling after a 5 year break I have been trying to reeducate myself. In my area of the state there's not many agricultural fields or private land to hunt ducks and geese. I'm pretty much restricted to a few state land areas some holding small ponds throughout. Iv seen mallards, woodies, and divers late last year in a few but never any geese. Anyone on here have suggestions on where to look for the early goose seasons any input would be appreciated.
  2. I second this I used these with great success last year. Extremely accurate out to 60 yards and deer never made it farther than 50 yds. Before this I was strictly a fixed head shooter but the ulmers are staying in my quiver for some time.
  3. Hey Everyone I've recently been looking for a taxidermist to mount a wood duck drake iv had wrapped in the freezer for some time. The reason i have not gotten the mount done already is i don't know where to take it. I have used a taxidermist in Pennsylvania for my deer in the past but i cant justify the 4 hour drive down. Now his work is real good, but Its a long haul and his price has gone up a little to the point where what i save on the mount i make up in gas. Does anyone on here have someone who is reasonable in price and good on deer and birds not too far from the Dutchess / Putnam area. Any input would be appreciated.
  4. "The GR is always described as a sweet dog and the CBR as the opposite. That belief is widely publicized and is likely influencing the OP's girlfriend." As mike said this is the exact reason she dosnt like the chessie breed. She also feels they have too much energy i don't think so, I see it as work drive. I am going to work on the two dog idea and see if she goes for it i don't see why she wouldn't.
  5. My buddy uses them, the hole is impressive and put a gut shot doe down within 40 yds. As far as durability is concerned they're horrible from what I saw 2 misses into dirt resulted in bent blades and a snapped blade.
  6. I have recently been looking to replace my late Chesapeake for waterfowl and upland hunting. He was a once in a lifetime dog and will be hard if ever possible to beat. However I feel ready to move on and bring a pup in to get back in to bird hunting. My girlfriend is proving to be difficult to sell the chessie breed on and is insisting on a golden. I was wondering what everyone's view and preference is on duck dogs as far as family dogs and train ability. Opinions are much appreciated
  7. Thanks for the tips I will be sure to keep a look out for signs when I walk the property in a couple of weeks probably towards the end of March. Hopefully I can pick up a few more to expand the possibilities.
  8. I was curious as too how many fellow turkey hunters deploy scounting techniques into their preperation for the spring season. I had been lucky to have been graced with spots full of birds so scouting for turkey was never a thought that crossed my mind. However this last year i have lost 4 deer hunting spots that had proven to be just as good for turkey due to people moving and my job relocating from its previous location. I luckily kept one proven winner (a pain of a walk in and out though) and picked up a spot, pretty much a lot of open hardwoods, flat nothing special to the layout except one field the land owner has told me about. Any tips on preseason locating and scouting would be appriciated.
