I have a one year old Chesapeake Bay I rescued a month ago to train for duck hunting. I have experience with the breed and know they can be a handful at times so I took on the project expecting just that a project. I never expected her to catch on so quickly, shes got everything down and passed her gun shyness test with flying colors. I am confident she will be in the duck blind with me this fall however, shes got one problem I am not sure how to break. She has such a high prey drive she will break and chase just about anything that moves. Last week a deer and rabbit, today the neighbors cat and it is impossible to call her off. Once she gets it in her mind shes going, shes gone. My neighbor also raises pheasants and now that she knows the scent and look of a real bird (now using a dead mallard hen for scent recognition) she immediately breaks from the house to his pheasant coop and scares the living hell out of them. I am happy shes got the drive but I can't have her bothering my neighbors. Also the non target chasing is obviously a no go while hunting. Is my best bet to have her wear an e collar and give her a zap when she wont come off and goes after non target animals. As for the neighbors pheasants I am at a loss what to do there. I don't want to discourage her bird drive. Any advice on the subject is appreciated.

Waterfowl spots are hard to come by in the southern zone. The Great swamp has become a lost cause most places are privately accessed and owned by non hunters. The huntable parts are either a hell of a trek with a boat/wade combo or over hunted. Have my best luck puddle pond hunting state land in the area and small lake hunting. I get some sideways looks and even had one lady yell at me when coming back to the boat ramp on one spot but its legal what can they do you just smile and keep on moving.

Late check in. Have had internet issues as of late. Update on the dog I talked to the rescue and she was originally fostered to the present owner from an older gentleman who purchased her with the intent of making her a hunting dog, but sadly passed away just three months later. The wife a non hunter did not have the time or energy to handle her. According to the rescue she has some clicker training on top of what the foster told me. I will be taking the long trek to Maine next weekend to pick her up for a "foster run". Hoping all works out

Hey everyone, Follow up to last years post on the chessie vs golden debate me and the girlfriend had. We did decide to get separate dogs for the two of us which I think is a win win. The next part of the search is the hardest. Ideally I would have had gotten the dog and have began grooming it for the upcoming seasons but life has a funny way of getting in the way of our plans. Long story short, a career change and lack of work recently has landed me less than ideal living arrangements to bring another life into the picture, but everything is starting to swing back to normal. That being said my work schedule doesn't leave me with ample time to properly train a young pup through the house breaking stages, so I have been looking into started dogs but a 3,000+ dollar price tag is a hard pill to swallow. I have come across a 1 year old female chessie ( I have expirence with the breed), who is up for owner placement through a rescue that deals exclusively with the breed. Everything sounds hopeful with her as she prefers a male handler, is not gun shy, loves the water and as the owner puts it very "birdy" and marks and tracks very well. My concern is shes never been hunted and apparently does not give after a retrieve. I think getting her to give to the hand shouldn't be a hard thing to break with proper patience and her younger age. My question is in your opinions should I take a leap of faith on her and has anyone had experience starting an older or rescue dog on a hunt training program?

I'll check out the link, and that is how I always hunted my local spots just sub out a blind for a stand. It's just kind of hard to pin point a brand new property that's a 2 hour ride north for me. I'll check out the apple trees I have a few scattered through the property and definitley get started on my trail system

I was wondering how many of you plant and effectively use "kill Plots" on your hunting lands. I have 47 acres in the lower Catskills that I picked up last year. I have to do quite a bit of land management as much of the woods around my fields had been logged about 10 years back and is now an overgrown mess that's great for deer cover but impossible to navigate and see more than 10 yards through. On the bright side the top of the mountain is great and my entire lower field is corn which is farmer managed and my middle and top field is hay. I will be keeping a lot of the under brush for bedding and travel cover but want to cut trails through it to help redirect deer travel. My other thought was to make a few 50-100 yard wide by 100-300 yard long staging or kill plots in and near the cover to catch the deer before they make their way to the big fields at night. After dark the hay fields are absolutely covered in does. My question is how many have used this tactic and what are good seeds to plant, being that I have corn and hay would a late season browse like turnips and radishes be best or an all around option like clovers and oats?

I am new to the predator hunting world. I have always wanted to do it but haven't jumped for the set up until recently. I have purchased a .223, calls, light for night hunting and have done a ton of research, as well as watching coyote hunting videos from calling the country. In my opinion they seem to be very knowledgeable and as informational as videos come. I have a buddy who traps and has frozen his pelts to sell green (has yet to bring them to a buyer). I finally sprung into predator hunting to help out the deer, turkey, and rabbit population on my new farm in Schoharie county which is over run with coyote and bobcats as well as my hometown spots in Putnam county, but figure if I can make a few bucks and use the animal after harvest its a win win. I was wondering who sells green vs going through the stretching, drying, and tanning process themselves and why? Also if there is a annual fur buyer in the southern tier, I have been looking it up but haven't found any information on that as of yet.

LIVE from the woods 2015 Edition! - Sixth Year Going Strong
Hookhunter20 replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Took my brother out for his first hunt of the year due to his crazy college schedule. Fingers crossed! -
Shot a doe with a shwacker and a grim reaper fatal steel both performed excellent. Might try the viper tricks next year but the reapers earned a spot in the quiver and I gave the shwackers to my brother to use.

Best way is do it yourself, use to always drop It off to a butcher and get frustrated that I wouldn't get the same meat back. What gave it away was dropping off a yearling doe my father shot and him getting back meat tough as leather or my buddy getting back a steak with a broad head still in it (no exaggeration) I qauter it and do it at my leiuzure within the week. Know exactly what you are getting with the quality preserved. As someone said YouTube videos can teach you a lot of you don't have someone to guide you through it.

Congrats on the buck! What town did you take him in have a buck on camera that looks really similar -
Depending on the situation I've done both. I prefer to shoot while on a slow relaxed walk or a natural stop but sometimes you have no choice. It's a judgement call as many people said. If you do stop them you have a small window to play with and 9/10 I've had them drop on the shot.

Side view shot a little better than the other picture. Yea still bringing the bow with me, not much of a shotgun hunter. Thanks hoping I can end my season on a high note.

Checked my camera at a spot I let sit for a few weeks and caught a few pictures of this guy. Four days apart mid day, and all the doe groups are finally broken up here with the exception of a young doe and her fawn. Fingers crossed he comes out pulling an all day sit today and Sunday.
-
Yea man figured I was more than fair with him this season.
-
When he shot and I watched the buck take off I said why'd you take that shot, he was coming right on the trail it would have been a 10 yard broadside chip shot. He said he was walking to slow it would have been dark before he got to your lane I made a good shot. That just added to my frustration

That's the plan, I spent some time looking on a map today and I think I can get in a little tighter now that he's likely on edge.

We used to hang out a lot but lost touch for a while when. We started hanging out again a few months ago figured we were good enough friends to have a level of respect. I know I personally wouldn't have pulled that stunt. Anyway I was working my other friend and his dog went back and looked for any sign and the arrow along the trail he ran off on found no blood, arrow, hair, or anything. Just kicked up leaves from him taking off. When he ran after the shot he spun bolted stopped about after a 40 yard dash and walked calmly into thick cover where he came from. Never heard a crash or him run through the cover.
-
Bello thanks man, you think people would have a little self control and respect your spots. A friend of his went through a break up and he was hunting the girlfriends house.

Exactly I couldn't bring myself to do that l, you would think a they would have the decency at least. Like I said last think I expected to happen, now I know live and you learn I guess.
