Live in Carmel too, Putnam is tough. number of birds isn't a problem but it sure is hard to find spots. My hunting is limited to small water holes on state land. Knocked on a few doors this offseason to see about some fields that held geese with no luck. My suggestion if your set on field hunting would be to check out the Amenia area up rt 22 more farmland and a lot more gun friendly people. Our areas getting pretty liberal

Haven't seen any rut activity in 3n or 3s at all, been hearing about the small guys chasing. Hopefully it breaks open this weekend

As some of you may remember I posted on here to get your opinion on adopting a rescue dog for waterfowl hunting. As expected I got mixed advice on the matter but decided to go for it anyway. She passed her gun shyness test, got her land retrieving down after that water and boat retrieving took less than a day each. Fast forward four months from the day I adopted her and add in many hours spent training and the verdict is finally in. My girl is officially a hunter. This afternoon was the real world test and I'd say she passed with flying colors. She was a little jumpy and whiny between flights but nothing I didn't expect, it was after all her first hunt. About 30 minutes into the hunt we had a flock of 6 geese come in and give me a passing shot at about 40 yards, missed twice, had an IC in for decoying birds. Surprisingly they doubled back and came in to land and I folded one and sent the dog. I was a little worried how she'd handle a 15 lb flapping goose as her first bird but after getting wing slapped once she grabbed it and brought it back flawlessly. Couldn't be happier with her and goes to show a little commitment and work goes a long way and you don't always have to spend 1500 bucks on a pup for a hunting dog.

From the stand I watched her run stop and stand for about 3 minutes and then run through a neighbors yard well over 400 yards away (hunting Westchester). She was acting ok but I tracked to where I last saw her with no blood and was pretty confident that besides being hit she was fine, that and the house she ran towards is less than receptive towards hunters. I searched in the direction the second doe ran with two friends for about 300 yards just to make sure she was missed clean as well.

Well after about a month straight of hunting with no shot opportunities today I was finally graced with the opportunity to take a shot at not one but two does within five minutes of each other. My friends and father call me the doe master for a reason, I may get buck fever but does never get past me... until today. I made a terrible shot at 22 yards on the first doe very high no vitals hit. The way I was shaking you would think I had a 12 point standing in front of me. The second a clean miss hair trimming at 18 yards. I think the first high hit got me inside my own head and I subconsciously tried to compensate unnecessarily. I am thankful for the clean miss on the second as there is nothing more that I hate than putting a bad non lethal hit on an animal. Any one else experience these almost newbie to hunting jitters when finally presented with a shot during a tough season? As many times as I run that shot over in my head and think of all the times I've hit similar and tougher shots I can't believe I could blow it twice in five minutes.
-
Never personally had it happen, but have heard a lot of mixed results on this type of shot. Some live and some die 200 + yards away. Where are you located if you can't get a hold of deer search I have two friends with awesome tracking dogs. Both dogs have more than a few deer under there belt and Penny found my buddies deer 150 yards from impact with 3 drops of blood in less than 3 minutes no exaggeration.

Waterfowl hunting in Scoharie county?
Hookhunter20 replied to Hookhunter20's topic in Waterfowl Hunting
Thanks for the answer. It seems crazy with all the ag fields and goose traffic but If the flyway doesn't take them that route what are you going to do. I can do without the mergansers not much for the table lol. We get decent migration numbers year depending in Putnam but spots are few and far between and I'm really hoping to get my new dog a little work this year. The Mississippi delta must be a blast- 2 replies

Was wondering if anyone on the forum hunts schoharie county and the surrounding areas? I live in Putnam but have 47 acres in middleburgh and soon hope to move up this way. the amount of geese I see flying over stand while deer hunting is sickening. That combined with my lack of downstate waterfowl spots for duck has led me to search for a few up this way. Any info would be appreciated, if anyone does duck hunt up in the region id be more than willing to tag along!

My favorite mechanical of all time were the ulmer edge heads. Killed quite a few deer with them and as forgiving and accurate as they come. Never had any luck with the rages had two open in flight and caused a miss and bad hit on two nice bucks. Now I lean towards fixed heads again but if I'm going to shoot a mechanical I favor the reapers nothing I've hit with them has gone far.

Hey guys, Just wondering how many of you qauter and pack your deer on ice. Usually I hang for a few days or qauter and place in a fridge but at my hunting camp that's not an option. I've heard of people packing deer on ice for a few days up to a few weeks and was wondering how many of you tried it. Also if you bag the qauters and pack ice around or just put the meat in on bags of ice? I can't imagine direct ice contact on meat would be a good thing.

Love it. Owned a few Mathews, Hoyt carbon bows and an obsession and the Athens is by far my favorite. Draw cycle and back wall on it are top notch.

Athens Ace rip cord ace axcel accutouch single pin

I never noticed any flight difference using lighted nocks until this year with my new set up. Without them I shoot groups out to 60 the size of a baseball with my fixed heads and field points. With the the lighted nocks there's definitely some drop after 40. Inside 40 yards I have no problem using them, hunting in the woods most shots come under 35 anyway.
-
Switched to a single pin as well. As the others said I don't think I'll ever switch back to a multi pin. Put my 5 pin back on just to see if my single pin was worth keeping on the bow and my groups were noticeably bigger. That being said I practice out to 60, but would have to really be desperate to take a shot past 45 in the woods. Just too much of a chance to take hunting in the timber. Open fields would be another story.

Tried it once and it didn't seem to work anymore or less than using bottled buck urine. Bucks seemed to stay on routine. Give it a run, a lot of guys swear it works.
-
Grew up using pendulums, switched to a 5 pin for two seasons and switched to a single pin adjustable. I can tell you that you will be far more accurate especially at ranges 30+ with a single pin. The sight picture is 1000% clearer. Between a pendulum and single slider I see no advantage to a pendulum. In my experience they drop drastically after 30 yards. As many stated if you set your slider between 22-28 yards you should have no problem covering 0-30 or 35 yards (with proper practice and knowledge). Past that you should be able to have time to adjust and if you don't you shouldn't take the shot anyway. The sight I use is a axcel accutouch and it works great I'm a big fan of the accu click system. It makes adjusting a breeze as long as you know what yardage your currently set you don't have to look it stops in place at each set yardage mark. I do prefer the brightness of an HHA but you can always add a sight light. Id get and practice with a single pin wish I would have sooner.

Rage had less than desirable results and erratic flight out of my past set ups, both hypos and original two blade. My buddies have used them for years and swear by them but there just not for me. For fixed blades QAD Exodus are hard to beat out of a properly tuned set up they hit like a truck and leave a blood trail a blind man can follow. What convinced me to try them was witnessing a woman shooting a 40 pound bow blow through a buck like butter and put him down within 50 yards. For mechanical heads I'd go with grim reaper 1 3/8 or NAP spitfires either one does a fine job and leaves good blood.

It's worked out great. She passed gun testing without a hiccup worked from .22 to 12 gauge in one session. She's your typical Chessie stubborn at times and a little sensitive but I have her retrieving and giving without fail. She's a water nut and her water retrieves are great. Steadiness and containing her excitement is the big thing she has a little trouble with but we are working through it now. She's picked up on everything way faster than I could have ever imagined. So far seems like I got lucky with her

Hey everyone, I will be getting my trapping license this fall and obviously I'm about as green as they come. I have property in upstate NY, that has an abundance of predators. I don't want to get into trapping for the money as I know fur price are down these days, but a little money earned and helping my deer, turkey, rabbit, grouse and hopefully reintroduced pheasant population is a win enough for me. I have seen a fisher every time I have scouted and hunted this piece of land. My cousin who lives about five minutes down the road from my property lost about 15 of his "prized show chickens" to a fisher in one night (trail cam confirmed). I have gotten a few coyote and fox pictures as well but have not seen them in person just yet. Primarily my target animal to remove by trapping is the fisher, I like and don't mind putting some hours into fox and coyote hunting with the gun but wouldn't mind grabbing a few of them in a trap as well. Any advice on trap sizes, most reliable beginner priced friendly brands and catching foxes, coyotes, bobcats, racoons, and the fisher would be appriciated!

I've recently been testing some fixed blades after shooting mechanical broad heads for the past three seasons. Ulmer Edges were my go to until they were discontinued. Last season I tried out a rage which I was very unimpressed with, mine prematurely opened on a nice buck resulting in a non lethal poor hit and my friend had an extremely poor blood trail due to lack of penetration. I did have a quick ethical kill with a shwacker but I want to get away from mechanical heads. Recently I have shot Slick trick Vipertricks, Slick trick Mags, Ramcats, and DRTs. The DRT hit 4 inches low at 20 out of a pretty well tuned bow. The mags are close but not so forgiving, any shooter error shows, but the Vipers are dead on out to 40 (all I tested so far). Anybody have any field experience with the vipers? I can't find as much online about them as other heads.
