  1. Happened to me with my half moon. Now I have a dloop. Accuracy increased by 2x. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  2. If oaks and trilliums are regenerating, its about right. If not, you are loosing your woods and will have negative deer health impacts. Read the land and it will tell you what you need to know (and I'd bet its not healthy with 1x/year). Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  3. ROW vary by highway ownership. 66' is a common width for the most narrow roads I.e. towns, but can be hundreds of feet wide on state or federal highways, which is why the reg is so vauge. Most road maintenance follows inside the row so infrastructure and mowing is your best guide. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  4. Plauge is in prairie dogs in the Midwest high plains today and still carried by fleas. Very rare for people to get it. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  5. Second of the year with my Matthews in 7R. Hardest shot I've made so far ever in my third year bow hunting. He was angling from my right to behind my stand out of range. As he was finally close enough I had to stand up, turn to about 5 o'clock (not fall), draw, stop him walking, aim and shoot in just about one motion. Found him down 80 yards away.
  6. Sgt. You are welcome to register to hunt in Cornell university's deer management program . www.Cornell plantations.org/deerprogram for details and on-line application. Over 10,000 acres and only 45 minutes from Binghamton. Todd B. (Natural areas director, Cornell plantations)
  7. False hellebore. Veratrum viride. It is poisonous so deer and other herbivores don't eat it. Showy ladies slipper orchid does look similar but is rare and restricted only to fens. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  8. That is spot on. It is a primary goal in the Dec statewide deer management plan released last year. It was part of the law that changed discharge for both bows and xbows to 150 and 250' respectively. All new tools to help reduce overabundant deer numbers in suburban areas. End result is more acres, more opportunities, more seasons, weapons, and more balanced deer numbers which get less deer vehicle collisions' Lyme's disease, ag and forest over browse damage. That is why it was in the state deer plan, had support from tnc , Audubon, etc and broad public support. You would think hunters would be thrilled with added options. 9. As part of the budget package, discharge distance for archery will now be 150' from a dwelling/structure. This was included in the DEC package along with legalizing crossbows (250' discharge) for the firearm seasons, small game, and last two weeks of archery deer season. This just opened up thousands of additional acres for deer hunting, particularly in suburban areas of the state. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  10. Of equal importance, the discharge distance was also changed. 250' for crossbow, 150' for archery. These changes came directly from the DEC deer plan (with hunter and public input). Let's dial down the cynicism. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  11. To answer why giant Canada geese don't migrate...read Jim Sterba's Nature Wars. Short version is this subspecies was used as a captive lure by market hunters for generations, lost their migratory instinct, then were released following new waterfowl laws prohibiting live decoy use. Limited urban waterfowl hunting led to large population increase we see today.
  12. Frost seeding actually refers to planting in late fall early winter frost/early snow rather than late winter/early spring. The seed's overwintering time in the snow actually helps scarify the seed coat, improving germination %. Not all seeds require scarification- for some it helps others it is required and others it makes no difference. Legumes notoriously have a hard seed coat and benefit from extra moisture and abrasion from winter freeze thaw. Late fall early winter planting maximizes this and late winter snow melt then helps embibed/scarified seeds get essential seed to soil contact in early spring. Killing off undesirable vegetation the prior year is beneficial (e.g mow or spray) but plowing up a long buried seed bank full of weed seeds not advised. Fresh growth in late fall is most nutritious so plan on a cutting or two to maximize fall attraction. Foodplot 101 - by ringwood.
  13. actually featured Cayuga heights and Ithaca deer overpopulation issue, among other topics. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  14. This is a persimmon tree not an apple, crab apple or hawthorn as others guessed. This is native to new York and delicious. Deer obviously love it and will travel long distances to eat it. Fruits hang on into the winter providing a critical food source in lean times. Fruits can also ferment on the tree making for interesting wildlife watching. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
