what part of the rut is on when rifle opens?
PREDATE replied to fearthebeard's topic in Deer Hunting
A real one, relocated to your spot and fastened with zip ties about chest high. Wear surgical gloves when handling it so you don't leave your scent.http://www.kishelscents.com/2011/04/04/making-a-mock-scrape -
You don't need to tell me that, I work there and live in a neighboring village. Are you in campus housing or do you rent from a private owner? Our company manages many student rentals in Bingo. Yes the city is a rough place, just listen to the police scanner on a Fri./Sat. night. It's crazy! All the more reason as to why I keep my gun rack on the wall next to my bed. Hopefully the new mayor will clean the city up. Good luck on your search of hunting places. I don't hunt many birds other than turkeys anymore. I remember a grouse/pheasant hunting area on some statelands somewhere between Lisle and Dryden, It might be Beaver Dam state forest. Not sure if they still stock pheasants in Upper Lisle.

2011 shotgun on public land. Still hunting in the rain. Did the Euro mount myself.

Not really Joe, anything under 30yds is pretty much a chipshot at the target range. Real world hunting situations are often different. I'm just the opposite where my aim suffers if I settle in too long, but then again I'm shooting with almost 0% let-off. Are you keeping your sight housing centered in the peep? What size peep do you have installed? Are you bending at the waist?

I don't see the reasoning to flame a newcomer for asking a legitimate question. A respectable person would simply just turn the page if he/she didn't have a solution. I personally know of a few people who get DMP's and never use them, but do give them away from time to time. I think the OP was just trying to make conversation. Act as you will, but nobody cares for a village scrooge

Welcome. The forum should begin to liven up soon with the season fast approaching. I hunt out your way. Speedsville, Richford, Maine, Etc.

what part of the rut is on when rifle opens?

Alot of guys put on large drives in state woods on the weekends, jump in! There's more than 1 way to skin a cat or in this case, to roust a hiding deer. -

Heh heh! LMFAO Peterbfly, Why would you call me into this? I was simply bustin on the OP for not using punctuation. Look a few posts back and you also like one of my posts! Heh heh. -
Juvenile red-tailed hawk just caught a mouse or mole. Sometimes they hold their wings over their kill. He looks like he's making sure no other predators are around before he rips into it.

I'm not seeing a pic, but I'm assuming that it had just attempted to prey on a rabbit if it's down in front of your cam or if it was a coopers hawk, I've seen them try to take squirrels.

I remember someone bringing up the possibility of a future .22 Super Mag, now that I wouldn't be able to resist!
-
My brother was calling around local shops to check on availability. The guy from the first shop he called said yup I got one(Savage B-Mag) right here. So he went and picked it up. He has since shot it a few times and said it's a shooter! We'll ask the yotes how well it does! Check the small Mom 'n Pop shops, you might get lucky and find one!

The new pics on the FB page look pretty enticing. Will they be out soon? Like opening night soon? -

Don't discount state land on opening day. The hoards of hunters will have the deer on the hoof all day long. Try to find a safety zone and get in early. You may only be able to see 40 yds., but that's where they will go to hide. The smartest buck and the dumbest fawn alike will beat feet to the thick stuff when the bell tolls! -
Struck out on opening day squirrel

If I ever get skunked squirrel hunting, I'd have to hang the gun up for good! LOL just kidding, I'm glad you were able to get some woods time with your boy. -

In a spot that will give you a good shot opportunity. Will you be in a treestand? We are talking 2 1/2 months away so putting a scrape in now could be all for nothing when the rut swings in. A buck you watch all October could be in the next county when he starts chasing does. The deer will still be in their summer feeding patterns until the transition period in mid to late Oct. Then they will start getting more fidgety about the upcoming breeding season. I can understand your eagerness to get bucks on your hunting grounds and if you choose to put a scent dripper out, pleeease don't fill it with estrus scent until the last week of October-first week of November! How many acres do you have permission to hunt? It is imperative that you get the law after these poachers! Don't try to be a hero, just stay observant and even pass the word around to neighbors that you suspect deer poaching. -
I'm way behind, but not worried. Hunting is enjoyment not a competition IMO

Face to Face Gun Sale Question
PREDATE replied to Lawdwaz's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Since they're your friend, couldn't you just gift it to him and then the next day he reimburses you for that time you helped him mend his fence? -

Are migrant workers even allowed to possess a firearm? Do employees of a farmer who has nuisance permits need a hunting license? If so, do these guys have the proper hunting license? Could they have been predator hunting? That can be done year round by farmers or employees, but then we go right back to the question of whether migrants can even be in possession of a firearm or not. -

Well if you have first hand knowledge of poaching, you are obligated to inform a local ECO. I would be fuming and the migrants would be void of any hunting privilege, as well as the employer if he/she allowed it. The poaching is the root of your problem. -

In pressured woods, by the time gun season opens the deer(buck & doe) safety zones may be one in the same. This is where they will head when crowds start pushing in, but the does will be out to eat at some point and the bucks want to keep tabs on their girls. If you can find an isolated trail that leads into the safety zone, then just simply set up and wait for the bucks to cruise by. Always be aware of your wind direction when approaching these spots. Try to find an escape trail on the downwind side of the zone. That way when an unknowing hunter walks by on the upwind side, the deer will catch their scent or sound and filter out the back, right into your lap! Also, don't forget that a scent drag could bring a buck up on your heels too. A 2ft. piece of cotton twine dipped in your favorite potion and tied to your boot will suffice. I usually start a drag 1-200 yds. from where I will be set up. I sometimes do a zig-zag pattern so that the deer will not just come straight in, they will have to work back and forth for the scent. Make sure not to lead the scent right up to your feet, but rather upwind between you and "the zone". Then they will walk right past you. Be ready because they might not just casually walk by. Oh no, they could come at a trot and never even break stride! By the way, over the years I could have beaten myself to a bloody pulp for all the shots that I could have taken or bad shots that I did and missed, but in the bigger picture it just makes us strive to hunt harder, slower, and more methodical. When we learn from our mistakes, we are constantly gaining an edge. -
I relish the thought of being allowed to throw a kill-light or a NV scope on one for yotes. That's all I'd care to do with them, but then again poachers probably would too. I'm sure the poaching aspect plays a good sized role in deciding the legality of x-bows.

I know how you feel. I had the same thing happen at the florist when we needed flowers for my fiance's grandmothers funeral. I think the florist was scared because we were not too happy. They had 2 days to do a 10 minute job. Anyways, I hope your rig comes outta the shop ready to rock!
