Lol, I think you answered your own question. Deer will move regardless. Where, when and how far will depend upon terrain, abundance of food, hunter pressure and so on. Yes cooler temps will enhance deer activity because they are less likely to overheat, so will basic deer biology due to anticipation the upcoming breeding season.

Trespassing is probably up there on this scale. These days, I'm sure alot of doe get taken in a WMA that differs from what is on the DMP.

Sounds like you have a great deal in place with the land owner, but could you really blame him/her for being interested in $3,500? That probably barely covers 1 year worth of property/school taxes. Sounds like you guys treat the land with respect, which is probably why he didn't entertain the other offers. It wouldn't really be stealing, but rather stepping on your toes. If they are well aware that you hunt there, that's a crappy thing to do. You might want to make sure your stuff (stands & cams) are still there because they might be just as pissed as you! Btw, nice buck!

I agree with the previous folks who mentioned "jealousy". This close to season, it's likely someone was hoping to sabotage your hunting. Since you're planning on going with permanent stands, I'm guessing that you either own the land or are a relative to the owner. Word to the wise on any stands that might be still up and future stands, make sure you check them over real good because someone who would steal from you probably wouldn't think twice about removing a couple bolts. Setting your ladder stand legs in a footer of Kwikrete would be a good idea. A piece of rebar welded to the bottom of the legs in sort of a "T" will ensure that they won't just pull it out.

You can make a paste with Borax laundry powder and peroxide. Just smear it on and wrap the whole thing with paper towels so the paste wont dry up and fall off. You could try putting the whole thing in a garbage bag to keep it moist.

That yote must have eaten his wheaties that day because a healthy buck of that size would stomp the stuffing out of a single yote or even a pair. It may have been a pack kill, but if the winter wasn't that bad, then the yotes probably weren't hurting for food enough to tangle with a full grown buck. Tough call, but I'll guess that a wound or disease led to the demise of that buck. Back on topic, I've never had one eaten by any animal(besides me). I've only had to leave a few all night. I usually don't wait til morning unless I know it was a bad hit. 1-2 AM is usually enough time. What better reason to go home and grab the .22mag and get right back in the stand! Unless you don't have the constitution to jump in the woods @ night with all the vicious predators! lol

I'll sort of add to Doc's last comment by saying that if you have the time to be picky, late season and colder weather could possibly bring some non-resident bucks across your path. The big boys are probably not traveling very far this time of year, sticking close to food&water. You might be overlooking a bruiser just a few hundred yards away. A few days in the stand could shed a whole new light on your deer inventory. We all have 46 days to make something happen before the boom sticks come in. I still say there's nothing wrong with any deer you take. Part of the reason that I choose to be picky is the fact that I have dozens of hunting spots. I also know that there are "TOADS" all over this state! Who knows, you may go P&Y by 9:00AM on opening day. Stranger things have happened. Enjoy your woods time. I know I will. I totaled my car back in January so I picked up my 99 Cherokee sport to at least get me through the winter. I liked it so much that it is now my daily driver. It had 175,xxx miles when I bought it. Now it has 199,772. Never spits, never hesitates. I'm now hooked on the pre- 2001 Cherokees and they're quite easy for the DIY mechanic. So far all she's needed was a serp belt, new muff, and a coolant flush. I trickle some seafoam down the throttle body and put some in the gas tank every couple months to keep her cleaned out.

It is recommended that anyone attempting to forage for wild mushrooms for the first time tag along with a professional mycologist to learn the ropes. After that a good field guide is helpful. Pictures alone can be deceiving. There are tests that can be performed as well. I only pick and eat about 10 kinds of wild mushroom, there are plenty of other edibles available throughout the warm months, but I'm lacking the time to properly research them and be certain of what they are.

This is fine to try ONLY after you've positively identified it as a predator(yote,fox,or bobcat). BY this I mean you must see the whole animal. IMO, "shoot him in the face" seems a bit vulgar to be saying at an outdoors show.

Maitake (hen of the woods) is also fruiting. The base of big oaks is the best spot for them

Yes I feel that wind is one of the most crucial elements in bagging a smart deer, but still only 1 piece of the puzzle. Knowing where, when & why the deer are moving gives you more options for ambush sites

I've never trained a bird dog, but we used to raise ringnecks and bobwhites back in the mid 90's. We did it mostly to feed our hawks, but would invite some friends over to get their dogs on some birds. We would tuck the birds head under their wing and they would fall asleep. After the field had a dozen birds they would then bring the dogs up and by that time the birds would have woke up. They aren't hard to raise from chicks and the ones that get away do survive in the wild. I hear pheasants cackling and quail whistling up there every year. Just my .02

Well done Thor! If you catch the predator hunting bug like I have, you'll soon find out that these lil' buggers can be pretty tough to hunt. There's a reason that Native Americans dubbed them as "tricksters"! That's what drives me though, many nights on stand then bam one just emerges outta the fog! Also, you're not alone in using a WWII relic. I often tote my Remington Mod.11 shotgun. In recent years, I'm not sure what I anticipate more bow season or coyote season!
