  1. nys-buckstalker, I may be overlooking something, but I can't recall being on NAHC. What does it stand for? moog, that is a good point for someone interested, but I have lost interest. I didn't want to inquire about deer hunting, just off season predator calling/trapping.
  2. This dude makes the same post every year, but can never be bothered to answer any questions. I have even e-mailed him in the past and didn't hear a peep in return.
  3. Here ya go TeeBugg. I swear by Hi Mountain brand. Superb flavor! I like the kits because it includes the cure and the spices which you measure and blend yourself. You can even tweak the measurements to customize between salty and spicy. Curing is essential for preservation and food safety!!! The second row down on this link has just what you asked for.http://himtnjerky.com/jerky-kits.html And here's a blog entry that I found which mentions the Hi Mountain Sweet&Spicy( about 2/3 way down the page). http://billstclair.com/clairewolfe.com/wolfesblog/00002495.html
  4. I snuck out for a couple hours this morning. While stalking down a path with brush on both sides I heard something just out of sight and coming directly to me. First I thought it was a squirrel but as the yote popped out literally 10ft away I drew on it but it spooked. If I had drew my bow only 3 seconds earlier, I'd have stuck him. Kinda startled me, I thought I was gonna be in hand(knife)to teeth battle. Cool experience! No deer spotted, but I found some huge tracks under a secluded crab apple tree.
  5. First sit of the year I saw a doe and her fawn. A decent start, now the bowhunting itch is creeping in!
  6. I'm heading out this evening for my first bowhunt of the season. Pretty much just out of boredom, but some venny sounds good too. I'll be on the ground in some brushy country, so most shots will be close and with any luck, lethal!
  7. Regarding the probability of a mountain lion, if the green line was feasible then why is the red line not plausible?
  8. I hope it was made by a deer, but be careful out there! This is possible!
  9. Pretty nice! Trail camming out behind BU I see! lol Just kidding
  10. Glad you made it out of that hairy situation alright. So yeah, once when I started using a climber I didn't have the bottom lashed to the top! My feet came out of the stirrups and the platform fell back down the tree about 5 feet before it finally caught. I had to wrap my legs around the tree and "be the platform" and shimmy down the tree to get the rest of the stand! Not fun, but I learned quick.
  11. Happy Birthday! Getting anything outta the west branch lately?
  12. There is plenty decent hunting right around here. Your plan to hike into a forest is a good Idea. If you go on the NYSDEC website you can go the statelands interactive viewer. From there you'll just have to pick one. Print out a map of it then drive around it and try to find a section that is away from trails and parking areas. People hike, walk dogs, Etc on the trails so if you find a quiet section then explore it and familiarize yourself with the terrain. This is where you start scouting. Looking for heavily used game trails, spots where deer bed down, rubs on trees, scrapes on the ground,Etc. Another important factor is wind direction, the deer will smell you if they get downwind of you. Try your best to keep the wind in your face. This time of the season the deer are still focused on bulking up for the upcoming breeding season(rut), so areas with oak trees will be an indicator of acorns. There are many other food sources that you should learn about and note too, oh yeah did I mention that keeping a notebook will help! lol I've gotten a friend of mine interested in firearm hunting. I'm mentoring him on tactics, equipment, deer behavior, and most importantly, safety. I have not been out yet with my bow yet this season and will probably wait at least another week before I do. Good luck to you and ask questions, we will gladly give our input.
  13. I'd say it's a yote pup, but image #7 is an adult
  14. Going to BU? I'm in the area, but I'm busy mentoring another new hunter. You hear about the homicide in Bing on Friday? Kinda freaky that I was working only 80 yards from that place just a few hours before it happened.
  15. Troutfisher- you don't seem very high. Might just be the pic though
  16. I was out 2 nights ago hunting yotes when I spotted eyes. It ran up a tree so I moved in for a closer look. It turned out to just be a small opossum but as I was closing the distance something about the size of a squirrel went soaring through my light beam. It made me think of this thread.
  17. I might not get lay much steel this year, but I am gonna try to get some ermine, mink and K9s. Predator hunting has overtaken me! So do you but them green, whole, or put up?
  18. Oblivitar- What color was the hair? What end of the arrow did you find? What did the blood look like? Was there fat/tallow on the arrow? It's up to you to make that decision to call it off, but he might be dead somewhere. Stranger things have happened. Like shooting a deer with a .50 cal muzzleloader and not finding blood for 100yds. Sounds to me like the arrow was stopped by the opposite shoulder and is still in him, plugging the wound.
  19. A buddy of mine and I just went for ours on Saturday. Banged em both out. Bring on the split-tails! lol
  20. A small light will illuminate their eyes enough. I'd say scan the field, if it's clear then push on. Even if you spook them in the dark they will likely not go very far. Those are nice deer! I like the buck in pic #1. Best of luck!
  21. nice satchel. lol Why stop there when you could sew a pouch right into your clothes. Like a hunters potpourri.
  22. Sure they can, but they won't. Politicians will continue to hand feed the anti-hunting crowd and treat us like nameless pee-ons. It's actually lawless tyranny. They know we will hold our ground, so we get hit below the belt.
