  1. 10 degrees this morning and the wind made it tough but our traditional last day hunt had four old guys and two twentysomethings. We took one doe and one half rack eight. Now it's 39 and the wind has settled. I'm sitting in my most comfortable stand and thinking back on the year. Yes, this is great fun for me and I'm already thinking about next year. Over two hours left. Good luck to all the diehards!
  2. Success! Three doe came across from the other side of the gully and stopped to look back at forty yds. Dropped her in her tracks! Guess that's a wrap on 2016. Now for a long uphill drag.
  3. Luckily there is barely a breeze cause it's cold! Sitting above a gully in 8N this morning. Nothing moving but lots of tracks from last night. Including some bear tracks. Only a little time left on the year, then I think I'll hibernate myself until April.
  4. Live from in front of the fire! It was too cold to be taking gloves off and typing on the phone from the tree stand. I built a nice elevated shooting hut last year with a heater in it so what do I do today? I spend the whole day walking and sitting from one end of the property to the other. No one said I was the bright one in the bunch. Watched a small one with spots meander by just over on the horse farm next door. I remember thinking that it may have a tough time making it through the winter if we have a lot of days like today. Shortly after it disappeared I heard a shot and a few minutes later here it comes, front left leg shot through and flopping in circles. I had hoped it would come close enough for a shot but no luck. Later, about 5:00 I hear a shot from the direction of the first one and again 5:17, another shot from the same area. Mind you, this is on or on the edge of my neighbors posted properly. Sure enough, a few minutes later I see my neighbors Gator driving up thru the woods to see what was going on. What a day!
  5. Well, finished tracking, dressing and dragging my buddy's buck. I helped but he's young and did most of the dragging! Nice buck but both times broken off. Still, a nice deer. 155 pounds dressed out. Glad for him. Hoping I can be in the right stand tomorrow.
  6. Nice covering of snow, cool temps and only a light breeze held the promise of a good day but the deer didn't agree. At least not on my land. My buddy just texted me for some help in tracking the one he shot half an hour ago. Here's hoping for a quick recovery.
  7. I can't lie, it's happened to me a couple of times before... Quiet day in my part of 8H. Did some walking this morning and sitting this afternoon. No sightings and no shots heard. I did find a rub that certainly wasn't there three days ago. Hope the pic loads correctly.
  8. An exciting morning for those hunting here with me on my land in 8H. The cornfields off of my land are being cut today so the deer are moving out just ahead of the combine. Friend shot a doe and a second year young man shot a nice seven. I didn't see any of the nine deer that were spotted this morning. Could possibly have something to do with the Hunting Widows Night Out held in Geneseo last night. All of the ladies headed out about 3:00 so it was getting a bit rowdy by 6:30 when the hunters arrived. Lots of fun but late night so I may have napped a bit this morning..,. This afternoon is perfect! Cool enough, no wind to speak of an the quiet is deafening. All by myself and ready for the deer to show at any time now!
  9. Last minute buck! Watched it feed its way towards me until there was only a minute of shooting time left. It's down about 50 yds from me. Time to get to work.
  10. You bet you won't forget that hunt! Congratulations! My first deer was a few years back (or more) and I didn't own a camera ( forget cell phones, we had just gotten rid of the party line) but the hunt is clear in my mind as if it were this season. Still have and hunt with that Ted Williams 12 gauge from Sears. It is especially great for you to be able to share it with your dad.
  11. Still some gusty winds in 8H and starting to drizzle. No sightings yet.
  12. One of the things that makes my hunting more difficult is having a neighbor with about 100 acres that boards horses. Although the barns and pastures take up only about 20 of those acres, the rest is off limits. I understand her being concerned for the safety of the horses with some of the "hunters" I have encountered around here but I can't even get permission to walk the land without a gun to push some deer out. On a typical evening you can easily spot 25-30 deer in her pasture. She complains that the deer are ruining her pasture but still, no hunting. Not even bow. Whatayagonnado, ya know? Hunt hard, smart and safe. Enjoy every moment you get to spend in the woods and be grateful for the successes that come your way. Still plenty of time to git 'er done here in 8H. I believe that ML ends on the 19th.
  13. The wind is blowing pretty good right out of the South today in 8H. Decided to sit in the ground blind until it calms down.
  14. A thin crust of ice on top of the snow makes stalking impossible. A light rain/freezing rain mix has started up again. So I'm in the shooting shack staying warm and dry.
  15. It's rugged land for sure! I hike it frequently and hunt it occasionally. My best advice for Hemlock is go to the south end and hike in to the west hill. This involves crossing a stream that has steep banks but you'll find yourself in great country. As for Canadice, I've ridden my bike down the path (access road, really, for DEC) to get further in but that's tough with the snow on the ground now. On Canadice it's almost all west side for the public land. Steep hills no matter what. Good luck!
  16. Snowing and blowing in 8H! About a foot but drifts to nearly three made for tough walking. I can't tell you how happy I am that I built this elevated blind last year! No gloves, no hat and toasty warm. A little buddy heater makes it toasty. Now, if the deer would just cooperate....
  17. Watched a deer in the brush at 30 yds for 15 minutes thinking "I'm gonna get a doe for the freezer!" but something didn't seem right. I cranked up the scope and when it stepped into the open I could see the little bums in the fur on his head. Glad I didn't shoot. Pretty big for a button buck but a doe alone today should give you pause to check twice.

  19. First shot at 6:25. Steady shooting till 8:30. Sunrise was 7:08 in 8H.
  20. Savage 111 in 25-06. Winchester 117 grain polymer tipped bullets.
  21. Lots of action in my part of 8H but none by me. Shots ringing out steadily since about 6:30. Some from my woods but I have seen nothing! Except the squirrel invasion. I'm trying to surrender peacefully....
  22. I've found that the OnXhunt map is great for this kind of thing. It can go on your phone, GPS or computer. It shows public and private land ownership lines as well as giving you contact information for private landowners. There are all kinds of layers you can use like DMP unit boundaries. I have used it with good success in Wyoming and just got the NYS version.
  23. The hand muff is really the key for warm hands. Others have covered it well so I can only add that you might wait until after the season to put out some serious cash on serious cold weather gear. Love Cabela's MT050 line. For now try one of those body bags (no, not that kind!) . They work great and aren't too expensive. You'll get a lot more bang for your buck if you can make it through this season on the cheap. Anyone remember wearing socks on your hands to keep them warm? I heard them say that on a commercial and had some memories of frozen jeans and frozen hands!
  24. Sitting in my ground blind watching the squirrels chase each other around... and wishing they were rutting bucks chasing each other! Too warm but what are ya gonna do? This time of year we hunt! Best of luck in these final days.
  25. Regardless of who wins the presidential election this November, we will witness history being made. If Hillary Clinton wins the U.S. presidential election, it will be the first time in history that two U.S. presidents have slept together . If Donald Trump wins the U.S. Presidential election, it will be the first time in history that a "billionaire" moves into public housing vacated by a black family.
