  1. I use something called hunting LT it looks like this: I will have to check out solunaforecast...I have been noticing for years my harvests and sightings tend to be around the peaks.
  2. Lol, I know it sounds pretty shallow but with the golden we had been without a boat for a year (I had gotten old jet skis) than he got sick so I wanted him back on the water. With my big brown dog we had a big 30 yr annual family camping trip to our friends lake planned but it was so close to the end I just couldn't put him in the truck bed for 4 hours towing the trailer so we bought an rv...then when we got back the next day we got put him to sleep in the rv and he hated the vets office. We used that rv with the kids and other family all summer (just this past weekend) and took the black dog places the other two never got to go like the beach, no regrets!
  3. Our golden was very special to my wife and I as well, that breed is still tops for me and 3 of my 4 dogs in life have been atleast semi-golden. I may not have ever experienced worse grief than his loss. We actually have been feeling guilty that we "handled" our chocolates passing as would be expected of people with human children. Man cancer is a real sonofa...someone get on that already.
  4. I am all out of likes for today but thanks for the replies... It certainly all goes by too fast
  5. Can't add anymore "thanks" today but thanks for all of your input, keep it coming.
  6. I know this seems obvious but what steps do you take to get close to bedding without getting busted.
  7. Oh I know you just made me think of my dogs with your description of your pooch!
  8. Others have alluded to bark selection... I like mockernut and pignut hickory trees when available they have a diamond pattern bark that teeth of a climber bite right in. Different bark sticks to different fabrics which can sound like peeling Velcro when you lean away from the tree trunk...not fun on a quiet day.
  9. I love my dogs like kids (and I have kids) and I do think they have advanced emotions as they evolved with us...but I think all mammals share the ability to emote and also to be altruistic.
  10. I just read a post about another member's dog... I love dogs...had a 110lb chocolate pass away at 10yrs this summer (so we bought an rv in his honor and took him for one last adventure)...lost a 9 year old golden 2 years ago also to cancer (bought our fish n ski in his honor just before he passed as well). When the golden passed we got a black lab/golden retriever mix. I love these dogs more than most people. Please let's see your pooches!
  11. Hey guys I'm bored and can't hunt thanks to dad duty...the wife just left for London til Friday so that effort is now pretty much 24/7... Excepting the time between I drop my son and daughter off at school on Tues and Thursdays when she goes to preschool. So not only this week but especially this week I've got this 9:30-2:30 window. I'm gonna take the quietkat/lonewolf up on the Otisco Valley West Ridge tomorrow and get in deep but still sandwiched between some good ag. I have never had a lot of midday success (a few lucky ground gun deer) even on all day hunts, let alone walking in then...certainly not much a bow stalker either. Anybody had a lot of midday walk-in or ride-in success? Any techniques or deer behavior I may not be thinking about using to my advantage?
  12. I get it and respect it but... To be clear the fighting back a buck does is hiding like a punk all day cuz he only has one belly to feed. Getting drawn on wise doe with other eyes ears and noses in tow is not always as easy as it sounds.
  13. Again I respect everyone's choice on harvests as described but I would feel remiss not to mention hunters are actively seeking to end life and obviously the preference is in quick and painless but I also don't kid myself into thinking the animals are happy about it one way or the other. You can always tell when I wish I was hunting instead of indoors when you see this many of my dumb opinion posts... Anybody see any good pre-ruttin?
  14. In my limited experience bucks breed the first accepting doe. If that is the case then a glut of does is going to make his search shorter in distance and duration.
  15. I respect and easily understand why you would make that choice. That said if the fawns or sister doe comes back then I'm looking at a double if it suits me. I use as much venison as I can harvest every season and I also believe in filling the allotted tags as I know lots of other fellas do not. I've also passed both good shots presented to me this season on a spike and a little doe. I think all these choices fall within the category of ethical hunting.
  16. That is one mangey mutt...chupacabra?
  17. I also kind of chuckled at the thought of being "hunted" by a lone yote. Had plenty of chances in deer season only ever decided to drop a big really pretty one once...they smell bad prolly won't do it again. My only coyote concern is when I arrow a deer in the pm...I'll never let one go overnight again after I lost a stud 6's entire head and hindquarters to a pack of wild dogs in 2010 We are thick with yotes here...we are also thick with deer, lots of farms lots of animals.
  18. After 9 days of heat and some extended family camping I'm back in a tree..52 and still.
  19. A well-timed application of milogranite (fertilizer made from human waste).
  20. Agreed...I tried to convince myself the breeze would be ok but I napped extra long instead...
