Hawk coming in for a kill, and a buck in velvet, sneeky turkey head
robw replied to robw's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
better close up of the hawk - looks cool -
From the vineyard, lots of deer around, but these are nice to see if they're that big now, should be pretty nice in November I think also had this hawk swooping in. Did find a robin nest by the camera, may have been after momma sitting on the nest? and the turkeys are getting sneeky, seems like they are trying to avoid the camera

I spend a lot of time in Allegany State Park. The herd is down quite a bit compared to 5-10 years ago, but if you use your topo map, and get back from the roads, there's plenty of deer to be had. Shot a doe in archery last season, a doe and a buck season before. Saw quite a few beyond those. I have heard a lot of complaints about there not being deer left in the park, but it seems to come from folks who stay near roads and trails, and don't spend too much time in the woods. It will get hit hard the first few days of gun season, but it's a ghost town during archery.

Have a few wandering about. Caught these pics during the last snow we had. They seem to be looking at the camera in a few pics, maybe seeing the IR light up, but it doesn't bother them. Like the pic of the doe licking the cheek of last years fawn...

After seeing deer like that I'd be useless once I got back to work. I'd be thinking about getting a european skull mount vs shoulder mount instead of TPS reports!

he was moving. The cam took 3 pics < 3 sec apart, this is the 1st on, 2nd only showed a tail 4 or 5 yards past and 3rd was empty

Put my new Bushnell cam out in the vineyard to watch a well run deer trail, and got this guy hustling through instead

Strangest non-hunting thing you came across while hunting.

Have found many things in Allegany State park over the years The old school bus at the edge of the posted land in red house was a great landmark when we'd come out of the woods. My grandfather shot his last deer from it. A pair of camo gloves and a hat that someone dropped. I picked up after seeing them 3 weeks in a row A marker plaque on a tree placed by guys friend that had his name, date of birth and death ( 1971 ) and the quote "get the hell out of my spot" After a manhunt in ASP / salamanca for a convict that escaped, early 90s, I think, came across a leanto with canned food, gallon of water and a blanket. No one there, and I left pretty quick. He had been caught by then, but still.... Have also come across some squared in fenced areas, 50 feet wide, old chain link, can see across the pen, with no signs or anything telling what it was quite a few old cabin foundations, and a couple larger ones from where the logging camp was several old train tracks, and you can still see the shape of the ties, and a few old spikes -
My fav rabbit recipe Thumper ala King 2 rabbits, cut up 2 TBSP seasoned salt 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 cup milk 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables 6 whole mushrooms - sliced 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp black pepper 1/4 tsp Thyme Parboil rabbit parts in water with seasoned salt ~ 15 min, until rabbit is ready to almost pull off the bone bone out rabbits and cut into 1 inch pieces mix soup and milk in a med size sauce pan add frozen veggies, rabbit and seasoning in pan, simmer ~ 15 - 20 min, try not to boil but get it hot Note: if you think it's too thick, add more milk, 1/4 cup at a time until it is how you'd like it add mushrooms, simmer 10 min I have served over bisquick biscuits, pillsbury oven biscuits, mashed potatoes, or egg noodles, has been very good every time. Hope you like it!

looks like the jackalope in pic 4 has already shed his antlers!

Remington copper solid 2 3/4" are what shoot the best out of my Rem 870, hastings rifled barrel. Have shot many deer with them with excellent results. Although was at Gander Mountain yesterday and see they're $21/ box, so will be changing up this summer. Winchester partition gold shot well before, and do a great job on deer, used to be the expensive slugs, but $15 / box is doesn't look so bad anymore

Agree or Disagree Poll
robw replied to mike rossi's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
What could happen, is if the cost of hunting is reduced, then more people might hunt. So if the price reduction drops revenue by say 5%, but new hunters and fishermen add 10% new revenue from new licence and equipment sales, the fund does get bigger. But that logic only works if the increased revenue from new licence sales is greater that the reduction of revenue from the price reductions. No idea if that will be the case. -

I would find it hard to believe that anyone who wants to hunt or fish, and isn't is not because the licence fee structure is too complicated. Cost and access restrictions, sure, and time constraints, probably, but lowering the cost and increasing access to hunting and fishing areas alone would get you to the same point. It the simplification is what has to happen to allow the state to reduce fees, then great, glad they're doing so, but if the cost and access restrictions aren't addressed, then simplifying probably wouldn't have any effect -
looks like quite the place to hunt! Nice deer, and next year should have some real bruisers crusing around

I've tied my own for years. Always start with a loop you think will be too tight, as they tend to stretch a little as you shoot. Only need enough room for the nock anfd the release, not too much play. Bought 3 ft of cord from Eastern Mountain sports that has lasted me and most of my friends for 10 years now. This pic should help. If the loop is too long, just untie and do it again. Once your done, melt the ends of the cord with a match (quickly) and I always press some bow wax into the knots and melt that on the string as well to prevent the loop from slipping This is the drawing from Edersbow, but there are lots of other sources as well.

I always look at the dog and see what name just fits This one was a Molly from day 1 unless she's running away with my daughter's slippers, then it's Molly Elizabeth!!!

Thanks folks. This is step one in my off season scouting, seeing what made it through the season. I'll keep the cams out till the antlers drop, then put them back in May. That vinyard tends to have a lot of turkeys in it, and I get pics of them as well, but they never stand in the middle of the frame for me Turkeys are on the left edge of the pic

Well Done Real big dog, and a good start, keep after em!

Glad these guys made it through the season.....next year... Ignore date on first 2, sometimes the wind shakes the batteries loose in the camera and it resets the date / time. All the pics are between christmas and Jan 15, 2013. Camera is set up ~ 100 yds away from my patio in 9A in an abandond vineyard Used a Wildview Extreme 2 camera - cheap but does ok Also had this guy in Dec, never saw him again after this pic, hope he's out there - in 9P
