That one is not bad. I like that mine has the vehicle information on it. Many of them want to know what vehicle is mine when they see it out there. Plus the special dog training area on mine is key for a houndsmen.

I've gotten some requests for a blank copy of the permission slips I use for hunting. So here you go (below). Not everyone will sign one for you. I've had plenty of farmers give me permission but not want to sign a form. They feel it's easier to deny you had permission if you get hurt out there. Despite the law protecting them from you suing them unless they are blatantly negligent. They feel its better for them. And let me tell you its not you they're afraid of suing them. It's your insurance company. A few years ago I fell and got hurt badly. The insurance company contacted me wanting to know who owned the land so they could recover their costs from the persons home owners insurance. I sent them the permission slip said I was hunting and they couldn't sue. They came back to me two more times. Each time I sent them a copy of the permission slip and they went away. The land owner never even knew about it. So these work!!! I've also had run ins with people that think they own the land and try to kick me off. I pull out my slip and say I have permission so leave me alone. They get mad but they know they can't do a thing about it. They weren't going to be my friend anyway. It also works if you get stopped by the DEC or a cop. So they don't have to wake the farmer up. Just an all round good thing to have. They're pretty generic but they have all the right wording. Some people also like it because if they have to they can get a hold of you. They keep half and you keep half. I keep a folder right in the truck with all my forms and a few blank ones. Along with copies of the tax map for that area. Happy Hunting!!! http://www.pdf-archive.com/2016/03/11/landownersfo... LandownersFormblank.pdf

Anyone know what the lead levels in a Deer before it gets shot are?
-
I don't think that anyone is saying that lead bullets are a good thing. What we need is a good alternative. yes copper rounds can be that alternative. But you start laying out 30 tons of copper and farmers are going to stop farming and start mining. You are not going to get everyone with an older gun to go out and buy a new one so they can shoot steel shot. That's like telling everyone you have to go buy a new car because they're going to outlaw oil. It's not going to happen. Also remember we're talking about shotguns not high precision rifles. When I go out to shoot squirrels I just grab whatever I have laying around that was cheap. Consumers will drive some change but we need manufactures to be innovative and drive the change in a way consumers accept it. Not through regulation. If lead was that much of a problem we'd have a bigger problem. Lead has been used so much for so long and we're not finding it getting picked up in our food that's being grown in the fields. I'm not saying lead is a good thing but I think the problem is blown out of proportion.

Good article and I agree a substitute to lead is needed, but it leaves out why lead is used to begin with. Steel rounds wear out a gun something fierce. If you started dropping 30 tons of steel as the article suggests you'd have a different pollution problem. Copper is extremely expensive. Plastic is becoming more popular but has it's own health/pollution concerns. Like I said I would love to see us move away from lead shot but we need a viable alternative.
-
Oh I agree there's a cat problem there. Funny the farmer complains about them but then feeds them two 40# bags a week. Always asking me to get the raccoon's out of the cat food. Says if you run one over you better stop so he can throw a few more under your tires, or else he'll report you.

I disagree. Stop regulating and spur innovation. www.HuntingTactical.com Modern Gear for Modern Hunters [email protected]

Is Pink as good as Orange?
Tacti_Steve replied to Tacti_Steve's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Leaves don't turn pink but they do turn orange. www.HuntingTactical.com Modern Gear for Modern Hunters [email protected] -
Is this really what NY lawmakers think is the cause of decline in hunting? Do they really think this will spur growth in hunting? We wear orange for safety. You want to wear bright pink go for it. I don't care! As long as I can see you I don't care what you wear. Allowing minors to wear pink when they would normally have to wear orange is not going to get them to say hey I'll start hunting now. Granted there is some fashion involved in hunting. We sell it so we get it, we acknowledge it, and we promote it. But is that why anyone hunts? No. It might be why they choose the hunting gear they do but it is not why they hunt. Try again lawmakers. Granted no harm in passing the bill (but make it for everyone), so do it and move on to something really important. If this is the most pressing thing lawmakers can find to do then I say it's time we have layoffs in the assembly. http://www.lohud.com/story/news/politics/politics-... https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2015/s6...

the Oldest and Purest Form of Hunting

Arguably yes. Devils-advocate argues that hunting with your hands or spear has died out a long time ago. At least in scale. -
the Oldest and Purest Form of Hunting
Tacti_Steve replied to Tacti_Steve's topic in General Chit Chat
I completely agree that dogs can be both great hunting dogs and house pets. I will say though that there is merit to the argument. I believe that it takes longer to get a pup going really well as a hunter when also training them to be pets. I call it over training them. I have problems with them running off to hunt at first because my wife is teaching them to stay at her side when she goes running. Or the difference between stay in the yard and when to run off hunting. When to use their nose to track but not get into the garbage. Nothing that can't be overcome but I do think it takes the edge off of that out of the gate hard on track competition dog. Competition dogs need to be at the top of the pack and force their way into the tree. That's hard to teach when also teaching them their at the bottom of the pack in the house. Especially when you start getting up to 10+ hounds. Giving them that extra training at both aspects is much more difficult. That is where I think the tool mentality comes much more into play. Being able to separate that bond with the house pet and the you're here to do a job when hunting. -

My hound is a house dog too. Though not allowed on the couch. I don't want anyone to think I'm one of those guys that doesn't respect their dogs. They are alive, they deserve respect, there is a bond, they are pets (some more than others). But they are a tool for hunting just like your gun or the correct size wrench. -
Just read one of the best articles I've read in a long time "Nothing But a Hound Dog: A Photo Essay Celebrating Man's Best Hunting Partner" By Brad Fitzpatrick. I couldn't have said it better. Although he did start to lose me at "But viewing our dogs as tools diminishes the true nature of our bond." I disagree with that one statement. Hounds are hunting tools. Like any tool you need to use it as it was intended for. If you don't the tool goes bad and you've disrespected the tool. I say hunting with your hound (using your tool) displays and strengthens the nature of our bond. All-in-all a good article. Especially for those that don't hunt with hounds. http://www.outdoorlife.com/articles/hunting/2016/0...

Sorry can't help but good luck! -
It really depends on where you are. Lately the closer you are to houses the more you'll find. At least by me. They have learned there is a lot of food in the housing tracks. They like to pick off the cats and small dogs plus nothing else is in there hunting the rodents. I kicked at least 6 out from behind the farmers barn last night when I cut the dog loose. I know they were in there hunting the hundreds of cats that live there. They are getting bad enough that some of the officers I've spoken to say there has been consideration of opening the season to year round. The problem is where they're bad they're very bad. But they're not bad everywhere yet.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/about/259.html Permits (585) 226-2466 (585) 226-2830 r8dep
-
They're not going to do anything about limiting the access and they shouldn't. That is the landowners right. They can adjust the number of permits they give them based on the surrounding Deer population and damage assessment.
-
I understand your frustrations. You should contact your local DEC office and express it to them. Maybe they'll issue them less permits. You never know. At least you can say you tried something.

The end of the 2015-16 small game season...
Tacti_Steve replied to 22Plinker's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Most kill seasons ended 2/15 for me. On to the training seasons. Coyote is still going though. I'll get out at least once more before that closes. -
No problems here. I use the Tapatalk app.
