  1. Last night I had the good fortune to find a video that a kindly soul put up on you tube that showed how to completely tear down and reassemble the exact model of semi-auto shotgun that I use for trap and skeet. It was a godsend. and a time saver. I had put about 500 or 600 rounds through the gun and it was way over due for thorough and complete cleaning. But I wonder if these types of free videos will be available in the future? Especially if a governmental regime is in power that doesn't want guns in the hands of its citizenry. Obama and his dictatorship has won another rather round by cheating as usual, circumventing the constitutional process, and by not allowing an open debate on a plan that was not even revealed until it was passed. How can anyone who hunts and claims to be a free independent person not be angry? The damage is done and it will be difficult to undo. The courts are full of judges appointed by Obama and his ilk. It will take a miracle to walk this thing back through the courts. The lemmings and the "half-vast" army of big government lovers seem to be rejoicing. Oh, how I wish I could join those happy but ignorant souls! They seem to think big corporations (who have to be at least somewhat accountable or efficient or they would not make a profit) are the problem! They don't understand that when the worlds biggest, most inefficient, and most unaccountable monopoly (one that requires 2 billion dollars to create a stupid simple healthcare website) takes over the internet...... we are all screwed! By the way the $2,000,000,000.00 taxpayer funded government health site still doesn't work right and the government just sent out over 800,000 botched up Obamacare tax forms, another mistake that will be paid for by all of us.
  2. Thanks for the good post Philoshop. The FCC is made up of 5 commissioners as you pointed out. By law the president can only appoint three members of the same party, so three (the majority) are Democrats. Ajit Pai and Michael O'Reilly (the two Republicans) have tried repeatedly to have an open debate but Obama is planning to abuse his powers again bypassing congress under the guise that this is merely a routine matter of "regulation" and his appointed chairman, Democrat, Wheeler, in banana republic fashion, is set to change the internet forever and for the worse by this unconstitutional action and power grab. With so much in common, it is no wonder why our president is so friendly toward the Cuban dictator. I was incorrect in my post by saying Ajit Pai and Obama refused to make the 322 page micro managing FFC interment controlling document public. Ajit Pai was actually try to warn us. It was Obama and Thomas Wheeler the Chairman who are keeping this secret until it is voted on. As I mentioned above, nothing good or of benefit to our country will come of this. I am amazed there are some people in the forum who don't see the value of discussing such matters as this which really goes beyond normal politics. Their fundamental rights are being taken away right before their very eyes and they don't seem to care. Amazed!
  3. Yes grow, NYSDEC contracts with Human Dimensions Research Unit in the Dept. of Natural Resources Department at Cornell to conduct many of its surveys and do statistical research, and write reports especially regarding hunter preferences and attitudes.
  4. I'm dead serious. I am not a fan of any Comcast or any internet service provider. As more options develop for in ISP technology the free market will eliminate companies with unfair fee structures. More efficient low cost operators will prevail. But if monopolies are bad, why should the biggest and most powerful monopoly on earth, the US Government, be entrusted with managing the internet? Do you think the great advances in cell phones, smart phones and portable computer technology would have happened if telephony technology was still managed by the U.S. Government? The governmental red tape, regulations and bureaucracy that will be created will make it very difficult for small start-up companies and will kill competition, not enhance it because only the biggest companies will have the monetary and legal assets required to navigate through the bureaucratic mine field that will be created. The US government has shown repeatedly that it is ineffective in managing much of anything. The government under the current administration of spent the equivalent of 6 years of Face book’s operating cost just to build a simple health care website. That’s over 2 billion dollars ($2,000,000,000.00) of taxpayer money! The founders of the constitution you described intentionally created a government that was slow, ineffective in areas outside its legitimate realm. They wanted it entangled in grid lock in these matters because the greatest danger to the freedom of the citizenry is a government that acts too fast for the people to protect themselves from its propensity to grab power. For some time, FCC commissioner Ajit Pai has stated that the text of his internet neutrality rules plan is 322 pages long . However he and the Obama administration have refused to make it public. It will not be released to the public until after the FCC has voted. Pai claims this regulation will give “the FCC the power to micromanage virtually every aspect of how the Internet works.” There again we have another prime example of executive branch transparency! Here again, why should something like this be decided by unelected Obama appointees? It scares me, are you comfortable with a government that has already tampered with mainstream routers and intercepted private emails having even more power? Net Neutrality means the government will be installing its own hardware and software to monitor internet traffic, something it is ill equipped for technically and for which it has no legitimate business doing under the first amendment of the constitution.
  5. The Articles of Confederation were a temporary measure needed by the newly freed original states to survive until a centralized government and a more functional constitution could be established. Wildcat, I think your post did a good job of explaining the differences between the two. Immediately after the revolution the states were apprehensive about a return to a monarchy-like government through the misuse of power, so the Articles of Confederation were good at the time. The constitution created a an executive branch and a tighter union that would be necessary for the country to survive. The constitution created the three equal branches of government, which presumably would protect the citizens from tyranny by one branch or by one powerful individual. You may disagree but today many of us see the executive branch usurping the powers righty given to the legislative branch. I am grateful to be a free person and to be an American citizen where I can express my opinion as I have above. I am glad we can have a discussion. I also am very concerned that individual freedom is being threatened by the executive branch's plans through the FCC to impose governmental control of the internet in a way decided by the executive branch alone. .
  6. I have about 3 face cords left at the house. Started out with 16+ at the house. We do have propane back-up. I also have about 8 face cord of hardwood and 3 FC of cut up soft wood saved for the maple season in the woods under tarps about 500 yards from the house. (I make maple syrup for the family and extended family and friends...don't make any money at it, just do it for fun.) But drifts in the field between the sugar shack and the house are quite deep (several over 6 feet with one cresting over 8 foot). I am having to use snow shoes to get around. I have an ATV but no snowmobile. I guess I should have gotten a snowmobile Its going to be a late sugaring season if it ever comes.
  7. I would like to address the notion of why the so called "Democratic" or "progressive" party is not "Liberal" , a term that once implied the conservation of individual liberty. The term right and left is pretty much meaningless in todays world. You have two fundamental philosophies to government, one where there is a desire to centralize government power and that wants to preserve and conserve individual and religious freedoms. Actually the Democratic Party and the so called "modern day liberals" (which are not really "liberal" at all) have much more in common with the Nazi's and the Fascists than they are willing to admit and are are the opposite of conservatives who are the true liberals. The modern day liberals (aka progressives) are for the centralization of power and bigger government along with the diminishing of individual rights and religious freedoms. They have much in common with the effective and practiced policies of Nazi's, fascists and the actual practice of so-called communist states which have used the façade of socialistic democracy to achieve centralization of power before they devolve into dictatorships (which they all do eventually). The term "Liberal" prior to the emergence of the "progressive movement" in the early 20th century meant one that believed in conserving liberty and the preservation of individual freedoms. Hence conservatives are the "true Liberals" in today's world. The term liberal was hijacked in the early to mid 20th century. Using the term liberal, progressives like Franklin Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were able to fundamentally change the role of government in American society by expanding it under the guise that more regulation meant more freedom. The opposite was true, and they knew it.

  9. Thanks for sharing this Wooly. Its a tough time for the them out there and your short video makes the point well. I am also worried about the wild turkeys with the deep powdery snow, wondering if they can get enough nourishment from the buds to survive while roosted. Good idea ncountry of yours to drop some trees.
  10. Thirty Five years ago today, our country was downtrodden at home and abroad and needed to have something positive happen . The US Olympic Hockey Team composed of a bunch of college kids with a tough dedicated coach (Herb Brooks 1937 - 2003) upset the Soviet Olympic Hockey Team which was composed exclusively of professionals on February1980 at Lake Placid.. They went on to beat Finland for the gold medal. Documentary of the 1980 US Hockey Team: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huokfPgsZok
  11. Friends, Sadly another member of the Benoit Family has passed away on 9 February 2015, only 16 months after the passing of Larry. http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/whitetail-365/renowned-vermont-tracker-lane-benoit-dies-at-60 I truly enjoyed watching and listening to Lane on video and at seminars. I spoke to him a few times at seminars and shows. He always had an easy smile and happy way about him. His enthusiasm was pretty contagious. He was a great tracker and teacher of tracking. He will be missed by many deer hunters, especially those who hunt big woods. Our prayers go out to his family. May he find good tracking snows and a joy of the hunt that will be never ending. R.I.P. Lane.
  12. I love coveralls the best and I use the RefrigiWear Iron-Tuff™ Minus 50 Suit. I have had to work on the water in an open barge in the middle winter and other extreme bad windy and nasty cold environments and this coverall has kept me warm. Rated to minis 50 degrees F. They will also alter the suit for you at a very reasonable charge. Check out: http://www.refrigiwear.com/Iron_Tuff/id-0344/Iron-Tuff%E2%84%A2_Minus_50_Suit I had one for 15 years and just got a new one this Christmas. You'll love it. Made in the USA as well (based in Georgia). Their service is quick and efficient..
  13. Well, I think there is still outrage and much unhappiness here. I know you moved out-of-state but if you drive along the upstate highways and byways you'll still see plenty of "Repeal the Safe Act " signs. They are everywhere it seems. I think most of us know we can only win by defeating it at the ballot box. That was nearly done in the last election as Rob Astorino won Upstate in spite of the fact that he wasn't even backed by the Republican party big shots like senator Skelos who made back room deals with the Cuomo organization:. http://nypost.com/2014/11/10/cuomo-had-a-secret-re-election-pact-with-republicans/ The National Republican party was also pretty much MIA . If we had decent Republican party support at the State and National levels he might of won the popular statewide vote. Maybe next time. See map below.
  14. Congratulation Deerthug. I don't blame you for being proud. I read that it takes "two lifetimes to master" the sport or art of fencing . It sounds like your daughter is well on her way. There is certainly more to it than meets the eye of the non-swordsman. You know it is also very nice to hear about young people learning to do something difficult instead of just working keyboards and electronic displays. A belated happy birthday to you!!!
  15. I think if does were really hunted hard they might be a lot harder to kill than bucks. For one thing, during the rut, does would not blindly follow bucks around all over the place while ignoring hunters. Also they would not waste a lot of time rubbing trees or fighting with other does for mating rights!! Unlike bucks their focus would be mostly on "not being killed".
  16. Philo, I just called Mr. Hinniewaddles and he confirms it is B&C net score!! There is only a 30 day drying period on ears. Interesting article I read this morning in yesterday's WSJ about some pretty nice antlered does: http://www.wsj.com/articles/oh-deer-its-an-antlered-doe-1421103734 The doe below was shot in Kansas on 3 December 2014. Only when Chuck Rorie started to dress the big "buck" he'd killed did he realize it was a doe. Now here is an interesting thread: If you don't like to shoot does would you shoot an antlered doe? If so why?
  17. As expected some PA bucks have become quite resourceful in response to AR's.
  18. Assuming the animal is upwind of you. I think the simple answer is that the ones that run see you as threat while the ones that don't see you being a non threat or at least neutral. I think its based on the history of that particular deer as much as how you look to the deer based on you actions. If you are skipping along like a girl scout on a hike you are not as threatening as if you are sneaking along like a predator.
  19. I have only purposefully hunted deer and only in in Maine, New Hampshire and New York. I have seen bear within range but have never shot at one (mostly due to circumstances and hunting alone). I have attempted to hunt Moose having put in for the Maine and NH Moose Lotteries each year for over the last 20 years without success. I have often encountered Moose while deer hunting Moose in NH and Maine but never had a permit. Work (available time), family and finances has made hunting in the Western States a bit out of reach for me up to the present time. Thanks for the question. My feelings are mostly based on the ability of whitetail to survive in situations of high hunting pressure and in difficult environments without much help from man.
  20. I really like this (thanks Joe). On the few occasions I have been lucky enough to shoot a fully mature buck I am mostly just in awe of the animal! I feel all of the credit belongs to him not me!!! Here is a noble whitetail that defied the odds by eluding us "crafty" hunters or by surviving countless hardships and more than several bleak winters sometimes in extremely difficult environments like the wilderness areas of the Adirondacks!!! How different he is than most of us comfort loving creatures! We are all very fortunate to be living at time and place where we are afforded to opportunity to follow our dreams and hunt the whitetail, the best game animal on the planet! We should treat each other more like brothers (and sisters), an not let small differences divide us.
  21. Here is a DEC slide show presentation which will give some additional insights as to what the DEC thinking is. buckppt2013.pdf
  22. I guess I don't see the value of AR's in good farm country. Maybe in the Adirondacks or Catskill Mountains where yearling bucks are typically spikes or fork horns but in most of the state's farmlands yearlings can be 4, 5, 6,7, 8, 9, 10 or even twelve pointers. Of two bucks shot in CNY this season, one 8 pt. during the archery season was 2 1/2 year old and the other during the firearms season was a 7 pt. (broken off 8 point) yearling. Plenty of the yearlings are 8 or even 10 pointers here in the farm-belt. In the Adirondacks I see plenty of yearlings that are spikes and fork horns but not in the farm country of CNY. A question I would like to ask the DEC is how have current antler restriction areas in Ulster and Sullivan Counties worked out? These are basically woodland areas. I imagine they have worked pretty well. However I think antler restrictions will only protect yearlings in woodland areas where nutrition is less than optimum and a high percentage of yearling bucks have less than 6 points or more. The "only one buck rule " will only protect yearlings if concurrent with AR's in woodland areas but probably not in southern zone farm country where most healthy yearlings are already 6-8 pointers. In any event it will stop guys who normally shoot two bucks. The question I would like to see answered: Is there a significant percentage of hunters taking two bucks per year? If there is a large number of bucks taken by successful two-buck hunters then maybe the one-buck rule has merit. The other option that would significantly increase the age and size of all bucks would be an antlered buck moratorium for one season. This probably would be met with some hostility by some but a one year moratorium on antlered bucks would result in a quick fix to the buck age structure problem. Suppose the antlered buck moratorium were practiced on an alternate year basis or for a significant part of each alternate season(s) in addition to a one buck rule? Personally I think we should not mess with things the way they are. First and foremost I hunt for venison and to get out in the woods but like most guys admire the big buck with a big rack. A lot of big bucks are shot in all areas of NYS. If you want a big buck let the smaller ones walk and/or hunt where the hunting is tougher and the pressure is less and the average buck is likely to be bigger.
  23. Upstate, I was just kidding around. Have a nice evening.
  24. Do you find that the buck pellets last a bit longer than doe pellets? How long does it take to collect a bag of pellets?
