Nothing written on it being illegal for small game. "It is illegal to hunt with the aid of bait, or over any baited area when hunting big game, upland game birds, turkey or waterfowl." http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28182.html

Yeah, last year was my first year hunting so I stumbled on other hunters grounds on more than one occasion. I just give them an apologetic nod or wave then as quietly as possible, tip toe myself out of his area. If I come across a lot with a bunch of cars, I find another location. I'm a city slicker (grew up and still live in the Bronx) so no one else I know hunts. When my brother finished his 8 years of duty last year I was able to convince him to jump into hunting with me. Fortunately, he's still active as a reserve so we spent the deer season in West Point but we didn't actually go for deer; we went for small game. I don't have enough experience to tell you what it's like out in other public lands during deer season. Funny story. While in West Point...during deer season...but hunting small game instead, I was walking around looking up in the trees instead of where I was going and when I looked down, there was a nice buck (maybe 6 pointer) hunched over drinking out of a watering hole maybe 15 to 20 yards away. Of course my shotgun is loaded with nothing but birdshot. A couple of seconds later, the deer picked his head up, looked back and saw. He then took off like a missle. I'm standing there like "huh, isn't that something". When it was time to check out, we went to the station and everyone was talking how they didn't see any signs all day.

Anyone is a part of or know anything about this club? I've been looking to join a club in the southeast region.

It doesn't matter where you get your appertite as long as you eat at home.

I recommend West Point. During deer season they open up hunting there but it is only availae to service men and their guest. They also have a system there where they divide the area into section and you have to check in to an area so it reduces the crowd and chances of you stumbling on someone. Just the fact that it is restricted to service men and their guest only eliminates a good chunk of the crowd. Stewart State Forest runs a similar system. You arrive early and talk to a park ranger. He assigns you a small plot of land and that's where you hunt. When I say small piece of land, I mean a really small piece of land. And you little piece is surrounded by other pieces of land that the deer has to cross a bunch of hunter before he even gets to you. Needless to say, your odds of getting a deer in Stewart is a lot less than West Point.

Geez...kid, you're ahead of your time. Good for you. I'm two weeks away from 36 and I'm finally starting to show signs of getting it. When I was 24, I was going out with a import car model/go-go dancer. (not trying to brag, there's a lesson here) As I got older, I found more comfort in nature while she was still enjoying the nightlife. In the end, she burned a hole in my wallet then my heart and I realized looks alone gets old real fast. Now I found someone who is not only beautiful on the outside but also on the inside and more importantly, she fully supports my hunting hobby.

Okay, you had me right up till you had to go and mention the naked woman.

I'm assuming by making it more difficult to successfully harvest a particular game they can control the amount harvest each year while keeping hunter's content. Coyotes are not in any threat to be over hunted.

My favorite is Dolce & Gabbana - Pour Homme. I never got any deer with it but I have gotten a couple of decent racks before.

Thanks, hunter. Good to know. I mainly hunt in the 3M and 3P area. I didn't hunt deer last year since I started hunting in November and didn't buy my deer rifle till a few months ago. I figure this year I'll give it a shot (no pun intended). Started going to the archery range last month but I've been renting the bow. I think I'll invest in a bow later this year.

Ahhh...so that means if I don't have a DMP then I'm limited to one deer that has to meet the antler requirements of 3 points over an inch during regular season.
-
Excuse my ignorance but how exactly does DMPs work? I know it allows you to hunt deer in WMUs. Does that mean those that don't have a DMP cannot hunt in deer at all? Last year was my first year hunting and when I bought my license they just gave a me a couple of deer tags. I never used it but I also didn't realize that it was restricted to a certain area.

Yeah, they remodelled and moved all the firearms behind counters. It makes sense. I always wondered the logic of putting all those firearms on display without any trigger locks...and have the live ammo 15 feet away.

Two Sundays in a row I scheduled to go trap shooting. Two Sundays in a row it got cancelled due to rain. >

When did you go? They were remodeling. I went there on Friday and most of the stuff were set back up again.

Thanks all for all the advise. I remounted the scopes of all my centerfires with loctite. Left the .22 alone and I haven't gotten around to my 12 gauge which I have a red dot on. Strangly, my 12 gauge is the one I've fired the most (did some skeet shooting this summer) and it is still on solid.

Lawdwaz - Looks like a lot of fun! New Yorkers are really missing out. 132 Eight Pointer - Doves are not protected per se. The only reason why it there isn't a hunting season is because no one took the time to catergorize them as either a migratory bird or upland bird.

How much land do you own or hunt on and how many blinds / stands / spots?

hunter, if it makes you feel better, I own a co-op apartment in NYC with about 1200 square feet of hunting space. Since it's a ground floor level that faces the backyard a small field mouse just got in a couple of a days ago. I stalked it for a couple of minutes and my girlfriend and I were able to flush it into a space between my TV stand and the wall. I was trying to decide on the right weapon to harvest this mouse when my girlfriend handed me the closest thing she can find that can penetrate the tight crevice which happen to be an arrow with a field tip. I thought about checking the New York State Hunters Regulation Manual but then I remembered clearly that there is no close season for bow hunting field mouse in your own apartment. Holding it by its nock, I lifted the arrow into its ready position. My heart started racing with anticipation. I then bought the arrow down with such swift percision, the metal tip of the arrow struck the mouse right behind its neck snapping it. It was not my first field mouse take and since it wasn't a trophy sized mouse either, I decided not to have it mounted. Instead, it went into a plastic bag and into my trash can. As you can see, I don't even own a tenth of an acre but that doesn't mean I don't have any oppurtunities to hunt therefore I am not embarassed about it. -
I noticed that the base of scope mount on my .308 is slightly loose. I mentioned this to a local gun shop owner and he recommended that I use Loctite Threadlocker because constant firing will jar the screws loose. Has anyone else done this? I wanted to gather some opinions on this before I put any kind of permanent or potentially damaging substance on my rifles.

If it isn't deer, they just don't care. This prevailing attitude amongst hunters is a bit of a concern. 47.4% didn't respond and 16.9% doesn't care. That's almost 65% of applicants. Sure it's not deer but I'm pretty sure youth hunters wouldn't mind having another species they can legally hunt. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/59626.html

I don't think it's legal to own. It is strictly a military/law enforcement firearm. The guy probably got special permission to borrow it under authorized supervision for the filming of his video much like how to gun appeared in several movies.

According to the DEC website, the 2011-2012 licenses aren't available till August 15th. http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6101.html

The AA12 is actually US made. "Dmitri" real name is Kyle Myers who's an America born in the state of Georgia. He got the idea of FPSRussia because his old boss is russian. I find him funny as heck.
