Got down to the farms last night to move and setup a couple of cams, pull a couple of cards and check the plots. All of the plots are starting to germinate nicely with the rain that we got this week. Im thinking with the sunny weather they are calling for the rest of this week, they should really pop. The only odd thing we found was a dead fox at the edge of one plot. Not sure what happened to it, no marks, not chewed up and looked to be relatively healthy. Its a young one, and Im thinking a yote possibly got it and it left it there or thats where it ended up running and dying. I also pulled a temporary card out of my new Browning camera, and made the mistake of putting it into one of the other cams and formatting it. Whoops. That pretty much wiped out the chances of getting any new pics/vids of bucks on that farm for now, as I didnt want to pull the other cam card, which had only been soaking for a few days. I hung another one of my Coverts in place of the Browning, as I had other plans for that one to really test it out. Next I headed to the other farm and pulled my Covert cam out of its spot and setup the Browning there. This spot is a hot bed of activity, so its gonna give the Browning a real workout. I then headed to another spot on the farm to place the Covert. Along the way we spotted some deer out in the neighboring field so we stopped and watched for a bit. We then checked the corner of a corn field for sign, found plenty of it and a trail that looked like a bulldozer had gone through, so thats where we decided to hang the cam. After that we headed out, and I checked the cards once I got home. Heres a few vids... -
I honestly only start seeing a difference when the human presence is there. Its really like a light switch that afternoon, when there are 5 times as many people in the woods, with oily guns , etc. regardless if a single shot was taken that morning or not.

I didnt see anyone say anything about not caring if the meat spoils, I saw someone say they wouldnt mind the work it takes to deal with making sure the meat doesnt spoil as much if it was a good buck vs a doe. He didnt say he doesnt want to shoot a doe, he said he would rather shoot a doe at a time when he doesnt have to rush so quickly to get the meat taken care of. Honestly, I agree with him to a point. It doesnt matter to me if its bow or gun season in that respect either. If its an evening and I have to work the next day, and its warm out, Im not shooting anything less than a big buck either. Again, will one of you guys that seem to be siding with the DEC please answer the question of what difference does it make if a doe is killed during bow or gun season?
-
I dont know about your spot, but most of archery season, Im listening to waterfowlers, and small game hunters banging away anyhow. Doesnt ruin my experience and it doesnt make the deer sketchy.
-
Before I heard what Hurst said on the radio, I was under the impression that DEC just wanted more doe killed. Now that I heard him speak, he plainly said they want them killed during bow season.
-
Right, but you still have the same guys hunting the same land. Success rates wouldnt increase by much. They have already admitted that throwing more and more DMPs at the areas has not had the desired effect. Heck, for 8H, you can go get leftover DMPs on the last day of the season. If people arent filling tags for reasons like: -They cant fill them because they arent getting chances at the deer on the property they hunt -They wont fill them because they dont need the extra meat -They wont fill them because they dont want to decimate the deer numbers on their property -They wont fill them because they just refuse to shoot does then not much is going to change. There is also a ton of land out there that is not hunted at all or hunted very little, that no special season or additional DMPs will have any effect on. I just dont see much changing without some sort of solution to the access issues in this region.
-
Im not having a hard time, if that was supposed to be a question, maybe you should have worded it correctly. It looked like you were asserting that I made that comment. If what you meant was "Do you think they put a two week antlerless season in archery to take more doe in gun season?", then its a stupid question. The obvious answer would be no. To expand upon that, I have already said that their plan is misguided and will not work to reach the goal of killing more does.
-
20, 30, 40, 50, 60 The last 2 are for target shooting, it makes the first 2 into chip shots.
-
"So you think they put a two week antlerless season in archery to take more doe in gun season?" Your words. I never said anything of the sort. I said they need more doe killed. Why the heck would it matter what season it happens in? At the end of the season, they are dead all the same. Adding heavier pressure at the beginning of the season will be counter productive, I assume you have some understanding of what hunting pressure does to deer activity on a property. If not, a little reading on the subject will clear it up for you. I dont care how the DEC wants to spin this or lie about what they are doing, doe only, early muzzleloader, etc will not fix the real problem. I heard Hurst mention it in his public service announcement piece on the Bob Lonsberry show, but they have yet to come up with a way to address it effectively. It wont matter how many DMPs they put out there, how many special doe only seasons they add, none of that will get anyone access to hunting land. Cant kill them if you cant get at them. The DEC doesnt have a clue what they are doing. This plan of theirs is proof of that.

I have a terrible time shooting while sitting, always seem to brush things together on the draw. Had it cost me a nice buck a couple of years ago. I stand almost the whole time I hunt now. If a deer comes out and Im sitting, and I cant get up at all, the deer walks. Im not taking a shot Im not comfortable with.
-
How does that solve access?
-
Lonsberry softballed the interview. Never pressed the guy or offered any real opposing views. Not much more than a DEC announcement. Hurst is clueless if he believes this will work, or even an early ML season. Niether solves any of the access issues. Cant kill em if you cant get to em.
-
Yes you can. You can also use DMAPs if the property you hunt gets them, and 2 DMPs (only because the second sets of DMPs arent available until after the 2 week season is over). Its the same number of tags that youve always been able to use during early bow season.
-
Dont put words in my mouth. In those WMUs, they want more does killed period. Handing out more DMPs has not done the trick, so they are trying something different. It wont work, and an early ML season most likely wont do much either. Its not the number of doe they allow to be killed that is the main problem. Its land access.
-
Uhhhh, no, thats not what they have stated the goal to be. They said they need more does killed in those WMUs, thats it. If they wanted percentages to be higher during bow season overall, youd see the same thing happen across the whole state. You guys are trying to use false pretenses to prove your point. BTW guys, who says MLs are the goal here? Maybe its a little more simple, like full inclusion of Crossbows. Just speculation on my part, but I do know they want full inclusion. They have made that statement in the past.
-
I agree that they dont, thats not what Im saying is bull. they are simply far less effective than guns. Try reading what I typed again, but slow down this time and let it soak in.

Thanks guys, glad you are enjoying the thread. I really do enjoy looking back at it and remembering all of this stuff. dbHunter, my dad didnt hunt, he brought me up fishing. Hunting didnt come until I was in my teens. I love all kinds of outdoors stuff, not just deer hunting, though its one of my very favorites. My box blind is next, I have to take some time to finish it up this coming week. We have to get it in place soon. -
I highlighted the comments that were bull. All of your "bowhunters did this to themselves" stuff is plain bull as well. I honestly dont think you have a clue as to how things work out this way. I dont know any bow hunters that dont take a doe when they have the opportunity at some point through their bow season. I also know of huge tracts of land that are hunted by a very small number of guys, so that turns into a relatively small number of deer taken per season on that land. Then you have all of the areas that are suburban and you cant hunt. The biggest problem around here is land access. Thats why enough does arent being taken. Again, if the goal really was to kill more does in these areas, the doe only season would happen during gun season. Its not about making any group prove that they can do it, its about management, and that means using the most effective resources to accomplish a goal.
-
On one of the farms I hunt, I have to burn my 2 DMAPs first. If I dont, the farmer is not happy. 9 times out of 10 those are the only deer I take off of that property, unless a nice buck comes by.
-
Um, that would be because in suburban locations, city or county parks, etc archery gear is better suited to dealing with safety issues with houses, buildings, etc all around than a gun is. Quiet and less disruptive to the people that live there as well. Its really the only option to get hunters in there to help with the problem rather than blow craploads of cash on sharpshooters.
-
Are you guys doing that with bows?

LOL, he loves it. I told him he could get it once and now he wont give it up. Might as well let him keep it while hes little and can still get away with it. He has lots of time where he will need to be grown up ahead of him. -

Decided to cut out of work a few minutes early yesterday and take the kids fishing with my buddy down at Conesus Lake. Had a great time. My son caught a mess of sunfish, and learned how to cast by himself. My daughter learned how to fish with lures and had a great time throwing topwater. I caught a few largemouth under the docks and a couple on topwater. It was a fun evening, but now the kids insist that I have to get a boat lol.
