Clethodim or Arrest/Slay
WNYBuckHunter replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Ive been told the regs changed on it last year. I dont have a link to anything though. -
Looks like some nice pinch points and inside corners around the corn fields. That hedgerow between them would be a good place to look, on the east and west ends of it. Also how deep is the creek bed? That corridor that it runs through should be a good funnel and looks to be pretty easilly accessible from the road, especially if its a prevailing west/southwest wind. Look for pinch points and creek crossings in there.

What we usually do is a radish/turnip mix, also some rape in there sometimes. The deer tend to hit the radish greens early, which is fine because it will grow back, then they hammer all of it after a good frost or two, and they dig the turnips up like crazy. I havent really seen them dig the radishes up too much though.

Think I have enough turnips!....

I agree on their hours, they are right around the corner from the farms I hunt, so it only takes a few to get there. -

So Cleth cant be shipped into NY anymore. Stores can sell what they have in stock, but no new orders. Just a heads up guys. Buy it while you can. -

The forecast is looking perfect for planting this weekend around here -
We have a plot with a ton of clover in it from last years mix, and we want to get rid of the grasses to let the clover take over. I just called one of the local feed/seed places and was told that Arrest/Slay or Clethodim cannot be sold in NY any longer. Has anyone else heard this, or am I getting bad info?

Turners has restocked their PTTs in case anyone is wondering. $1.95/lb -
It includes those things. Anytime your profile page is opened, its counted. Doesnt matter who or what does it. Doesnt mean its fake, its just not a count of when a member looks at your profile.

So how high do you want your taxes to be? The simple fact is, proper management would cost big bucks for the DEC to do on their own. The department is simply not configured to be able to do it. What would need to be done is the wildlife management portions of the department should be seperate from the rest that deal with pollution, etc. and become its own entity with its own funding. Politics should be kept out of it for the most part, and the department should have control over the game laws and regulations without having to make every change go through the state legislature. Then, this state might set itself up to be able to manage things better than they do now. They would still need the cooperation of co-ops, hunting clubs, landowners and hunters to get things done though. All of that would be at a cost though, more tax dollars, because we all know Albany isnt going to curtail their spending on handouts and political perk programs to fund a new department for wildlife.

There are already plenty of guns in the woods during bow season.

I wouldnt think that way at all. Id be more than happy with my 130 and the opportunity to see a booner in person. Doesnt happen very often, in fact, I couldnt say for sure that Ive ever seen one in the wild. Been up close and personal with a couple of 160s though. Enough to make you darn near fall out of the stand. Sorry, got off on a tangent for a minute there...

Could it be that with news traveling faster, and further and the ease at which you get it, you are just hearing about these things more than you used to? Crime rates are down, etc but many people keep saying the world is going to hell in a handbasket. Just something to think about.

Im happy for this weather, we need it to dry out the ground a bit. Its untillable in alot of places. I just might get my fall plots in yet!

So I havent been doing a whole lot at the farm lately. Have some cams running, been mowing and brush hogging the normal stuff, thats about it. Last week my buddy got down there and mowed everything that needed it, including 2 new plot areas we are putting in this year. Saturday after the rain stopped, I took the ATV down with the sprayer onboard and sprayed those 2 plots and our failed corn plot. The buckwheat I planted is almost chest high, and ready to be mowed down and tilled in. This weekend we will be tilling up the failed corn plot and planting some DoubleBeam Brassicas in there, and the buckwheat will get mowed, tilled and some PTTs and Rape will be going in. Next week will be the first round of tilling for the two new plots, which are most likely going to be winter rye this year, and then going into our new buckwheat/brassicas rotation next year. We also need to finish up brush hogging a couple of other new plots, which will also be winter rye this year just to give the deer something to eat. Both of those will become clover plots in the spring. We are still waiting on two other plots to dry up a bit more so they can be tilled for brassicas this year. The rain has been killing us, but it looks like maybe this week will be the break in the rain we need. Only Thursday has a chance of rain in the morning. This coming weekend should be perfect to get most of our stuff in the ground. -
The idea behind a one buck rule has nothing to do with how many guys take multiple bucks, its to make hunters more choosy on what buck they shoot. I know of many guys that whack the first buck (usually a yearling) they see then hold out for Mr Big later on, which doesnt usually happen. If they only have one buck tag, they might not whack that yearling. Not all would do that, but Id bet alot would, and it would be by their own choice, not someone shoving ARs down their throat.

Irish Spring bar soap as deer repellent
WNYBuckHunter replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I have done this before, and it does work. After you take the bars away, a good rain washes it out of the area below where they were and the deer will start coming in. It may or may not work next year, but you can also use other scents of soap to do the same thing. Just change it up each year. -
Anyone hunt with a Browning Automatic Rifle
WNYBuckHunter replied to eagle rider's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
You will be had pressed to get into a semi auto that groups better than that. Well, unless you go with an AR platform. With the right barrel, youll drive tacks with one of those at further than 100 yards. -
I wasnt saying that they are different actions to the bear, Im saying that the two situations would warrant different reactions. But feel free to continue trying to get your "gotcha" moment in there.

A bear eating a deer and a bear eating your pet are two completely different things
