Rare, yeah. Unheard of? Hardly. Ive personally seen 160+ 8 points in this state.Btw, population isnt the problem in NY, its pressure, age and in most of the state, soil conditions.

Im pretty sure thats what they were talking about last i read anything about it. Not a state wide thing. Heres the thing to remember, you need to manage your property as best you can. You will never control your neighbor, and what they choose to shoot, unless you have a high fence ranch with deer you own. You have to make harvest decisions for your property based on your goals, and what the carrying capacity and deer numbers are. Just because you have a tag, doenst mean you have to fill it, and just because we shoot 15+ deer a year off of our property, doesnt mean thats best for your property. The state simply cannot micro manage every piece of the state, its just not feasible.

Im just telling you how they do it at our farm, and generally, thats how guys that manage properties do it as well. Glassing, trail cam surveys, etc. I agree that they need to crack down on poachers, and that the system could be improved, but I have yet to hear anyone throw some ideas out there on how to make that happen.

Reported success rates are what they are. Im sure the formulas the DEC uses take averages of factors like guys that dont report, road kills, etc into account when they come up with their numbers. Im not 100% on every source they figure the numbers from, but they do have people that go out to the processors regularly, they have the harvest reports, and alot of farms that get DMAPs, DDPs, etc, get assessed from time to time. I know every so many years, the farm I hunt, has the DEC come out and do surveys, mostly DEC guys counting deer over so many days by glassing the property. They also check the crop fields and look at the browsing levels. Is it perfect? No, but its the best they can do with the resources they have. Crossbows are not going to make as big of a dent as some people think. Its been proven in other states and theres no reason to think it will go much differently here. As far as the money thing goes, you are asking for more ENCON officers, but then complaining about the DEC bringing in more money. Cant have it both ways.

The last pull from my cams were really down in buck sightings. Pulled the cards yesterday, after a 2 week soak, and it was like a light switch last week. Half the time on the cams, nothing, then the monsters started showing back up again. During the day and at night. Scrapes are opening up and food plots are getting hammered. Our brassica plots arent going to last till gun season at the rate they are hitting them now.
