What kind of crap is this? For real? :)
WNYBuckHunter replied to burmjohn's topic in General Hunting
Oh boy.... : Did you look at the coyote crap pictured on that site? Even the bobcat scat is similar. There are no Mountain Lions in NY. -
I had an open shot top for my Viper. I climbed with it one time and did not like it so I sold that part. Id rather have the bar around me, Ill haul the extra weight to be comfy and secure.

I used to smoke, quit almost a year ago. In the past I always saw deer with a cig lit. Never shot one with a lit cig, but have shot them right after outing one.

My honeyhole plot 2010 edition...
WNYBuckHunter replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Sweet, looks like it should be a good plot. Im gonna hold off on mine till we get a bit more rain, its still drier than Id like it to be. -
The 3 blades are NOT barbed, compare the definition of a barbed broadhead pics from the NY hunting regs... with the profile of a bloodrunner in the closed position... the broadhead is spring loaded, so if you pull back on the arrow, it goes back to the closed position and comes out just as easy as a fixed blade head. The 2 blade bloodrunner is barbed and not legal here.

I didnt say archery seasons, I said archery only areas. Most archery only areas exist in places where the discharge of firearms isnt allowed, so since a crossbow is not a firearm, you will be able to use them there. It may even be spelled out in the bill, when I get a chance Ill re-read it. -

Yes, I expect if the bill is signed into law, you will be able to crossbow hunt in archery only areas. Why wouldnt you? If you read the bill, it talks about the safety requirements. -
Predators and woodchucks get my Remmy 700 SPS Predators might also get a taste of my primary deer gun, a TC Encore pistol chambered in 260 Rem During bow season, I have my PSE Octane that shoots CX shafts tipped with whatever flavor of broadhead I feel like using at the time For turkey, I use my clays/skeet gun, a Charles Daly 12ga autoloader I also have a Mossberg 500 20ga that I use for deer, but no pics of it. Its dropped many many deer over the years. Oh and a Marlin 30-30 lever action for times I feel like goin old school lol.

I think you are probably right. As I understand it, they are currently not allowed in the primary bow season. If it stays that way, there won't be much of an impact. As far as them being something that catches on, I think that without the linkage to the early bow season, there is not much about them that is very attractive for hunters. The only real appeal would be for gun hunters who would like an earlier crack at the deer herd without the rigors of becoming proficient with a bow. That is the only real appeal that I can see that they would have for anybody. Doc If they are only allowed in gun season, they will have an impact, just not everywhere. There are many areas around the state that are archery only, meaning they see almost zero hunting at all because only bowhunters can get in there. Now, those areas will be open to anyone with a crossbow as well. It can be a great tool for helping out with urban or suburban areas with high deer density and lots of houses around. I hunt a few areas now that are bow only, and 99% of the time the friend of mine that hunts the area with me is the only other guy in that tract of woods, which is fairly large. -
Deer are not strict vegitarians. I have seen videos and pictures from studies showing them eating dead carcasses and gut piles.

I agree, but such numbers would be the only way to make a real, fair comparison. The statistics will only become believable once the percentage of hunters reporting their kills increases. The formula which the DEC uses to estimate deer kills renders, in my opinion such statistics unreliable. While they arent exact numbers by any means, its all we have to make any comparisons. The chances of getting exact numbers are next to zip, ever, no matter what reporting system you put in place. Still, the numbers show the general trends. -

Yes, we did agree on something! You cant really say that about the double the kills and pressure though, the Ohio numbers only show that after 34 years, the number of crossbow hunters and archery hunters is fairly equal. You would need to know what the Ohio numbers looked like before crossbows to be able to make any comparisons. -

Now were talkin! (short gun season) They dont call it crossbow season, its already named archery season, for good reason. -

chevy, you cant look at it that way, you are comparing apples to oranges. what you need is a chart that shows the number of crossbow vs vertical bow takes from 3 years before crossbows were legalized in Ohio and 3 years after. That way, you get a good comparison to what effect the addition of crossbows made on the Ohio archery season. Remember, Ohio has had crossbows legal for a long time. -

Chevy, you are basing your opinion on what you think MIGHT happen. There is no basis for the argument that is based on proof of the same thing happening elsewhere. I could be wrong of course if you are a time traveler or have a magic crystal ball that can see into the future. -

Thats your proof? Deer & Deer Hunting magazine? No links to DNR or DEC sites showing actual stats or articles in publications? You want me or anyone else to take you seriously with zero proof to back up your accusations and statements? Really? And now I live under a rock? Wow. Youre speaking volumes now... -
There isnt anything decieving about the guy standing atop a 6 foot ladder and his head is just clearing the top of the foundation wall lol

Wow, youve already resorted to name calling? Theres a shock. Ive already established that you cant put 2 and 2 together, so I shouldnt be expecting you to understand something that isnt spelled out for you. I personally dont put my stand on the very edge of a field, I make sure there are at least a couple of trees between myself and the wide open field so that I can use them as cover. Get my drift now? You have no idea how much I hunt, so maybe you want to shut your trap before you stick your foot in it any further. -

Why not take the confusion out of it? All archery equipment can be used from the beginning to the end of any deer season. Archery equipment consists of any bow or crossbow that meets the given standards. Then, in order to crossbow hunt, you make people take a safety course and buy a stamp for them. That way, they become a money generator for the state. -
Where do you get your soil tested?
WNYBuckHunter replied to burmjohn's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I got mine done through Bio-Logic. It cost $7 and was done in 4 days with the results emailed to me in a nice .pdf -
The bloodrunners are spring loaded, so they expand when the tip hits the target.
