  1. I use one in everything except my 2 man ladder stand. The only way you can fall out of that one would be if the whole stand fell down. Youre screwed whether youre buckled in or not in that case.
  2. 9 months would be illegal, 6 months max as per state law. Not true, I waited 9 for mine in Livingston, this was almost 10 years ago though.
  3. Um, I fail to see how this has anything to do with carrying a flashlight. :
  4. For hunting, I like my non-folding Schrade guthook, it does a great job, but is a bit bulky. A folding version would be great. For everyday use,I just have a small folding pocket knife.
  5. For me it also depends on the spot. On state land especially though, I sit all day. Ive seen a ton of deer between 10am and 2pm when other guys are walking in and out of the woods for/from lunch. My private land spots though, I know when the deer usually come through, so I mainly sit for partial days at them. Occasionally though, Ill do an all day sit at those too, the deer change their habits a bit from time to time.
  6. How easy is it to cock a crossbow in a vehicle? What bout poking a 17+ inch wide weapon out of a car window? So before you start blurting out the typical NYB style "weapon of choice for poachers" nonsense, show me the numbers of people ticketed or arrested for poaching anything in NY with a crossbow. Just because you can hunt with one isnt going to magically make them the weapon of choice for poachers. Think about it, if you are poaching deer, would you want to limit your range to 40 or 50 yards at best? How about the fact that the deer is going to run after you shoot it? You want to be tracking a deer at night with a flashlight? Seriously, think about the reality instead of just listening to some anti-bs and spouting it as truth. BTW, no rose colored glasses here, there are tons of guys that are slobs that bowhunt already, and I just dont buy into the notion that if crossbows are legalized, that they will cause all of these possible poachers that dont do it now to be thrown over the edge and pick the practice up. It just plain doesnt make sense.
  7. If you can already put a custom avatar up, why put pics in your sig anyway? Besides, it clutters the threads up.
  8. : Yep, because someone thats going to do something illegal is going to let the fact that its illegal to hunt with (not own, you can go buy a crossbow now) a crossbow stop them from using it to break the law. Your logic doesnt add up.
  9. That Supra just sounds violent and nasty! I like it! ;D
  10. Here ya go http://www.nysenate.gov/legislation
  11. Theres a site that you can find bills and their current state so to speak. Iposted it for the crossbow bill, let me see if I can find it again.
  12. Ive been a car guy all my life, not into the import thing, mostly classics and such. A few years ago I got rid of my last one, a 73 Dodge Dart in favor of buying a camper (kinda like Doewhacker) because I love to camp and so does my fiance and daughter, so I figured Id get something more family oriented than the car. Since then, I have acquired a new project vehicle, but its not a muscle car or anything like that, its my father's old truck that he bought when I was a kid. I have so many memories of that truck that selling it isnt an option. Even if it doesnt carry a ton of classic value, its getting a frame off restore soon. Its a 79 Chevy Silverado crew cab with the Camper Special package. It sports a 454 with a TH400 and the big Dana rear end. The only major options its missing for the year are 4wd, A/C and the dually package. It has 56000 original miles on it, but has been sitting for around 20 years. It should be a fun project, it wont be completely stock, but pretty close with a few performance enhancements.
  13. They have an email addy on the site, just shoot them an email, Im sure they will answer the questions you have. If your son is looking for a good gun club to join around this area, ha may want to look into Brooks over in Rush. http://www.rochesterbrooks.org/
  14. Trailcams have a delay between when the motion starts and when it wakes up and/or shoots the photo. Some cams are faster than others. Plus, this picture looks to me like the turkey was right under the cam and its head movement set it off.
  15. I hear ya, Ive watched deer directly downwind from me just hang out before when Im up in a tree stand. Ive also been winded after doing all of the scent free steps as ususal, but it has always been when I was on the ground and the deer were within 50ish yards with the wind moving directly to them.
  16. It would be physically impossible for the back side of the blades to move backwards against the force of the meat and bone pushing against them. The meat would help to push them back into their original position. The broadhead would need to lock into its full open position to remain barbed. They are not designed to lock in any way. While they look a bit too complicated for my taste, Id probably try them out if I didnt pay for them lol.
  17. Hmmm, now that its pointed out, it does look an awful lot like a turkey
  18. I could find plenty of eye witnesses that were abducted by aliens and saw the locness monster lol. That scat is identical to the coyote crap on that site.
  19. One suggestion I have from being a mod on other forums, no photos in the signature area and limit how many lines people can use for their signature. It clutters up threads and makes the pages load that much slower. No limits, and it get out of control quick.
  20. Scent control alone does not make you scent free, so you still have to play the wind. If you really, honestly think about it, how many deer (record book deer) were taken before the day and age of scent control and modern camo? Back in the day guys were taking big bucks by playing the wind. Dont get me wrong, I try to minimize my scent as much as possible, but it makes no difference how much time and money you spend on it, youll never completely get rid of it. Like Doc, I cant say for sure how many deer I didnt see while I was smoking, but I can give you good estimates of how many I did see.
  21. Yep, winter rye is great stuff, the last year that I shot more than 3 in a season was they year I shot 4 and it was over a winter rye field. They were in there like crazy.
  22. PSEs are nice, but the one I have now will the last one I buy unless they improve their factory support in my area.
  23. I didnt say archery seasons, I said archery only areas. Most archery only areas exist in places where the discharge of firearms isnt allowed, so since a crossbow is not a firearm, you will be able to use them there. It may even be spelled out in the bill, when I get a chance Ill re-read it. Actually, I believe that conservation law that applies to firearms also applies to bows unless specifically excluded or differentiated with appropriate language. So it is possible that bowhunting only areas will still apply only to bows until somebody adds crossbows. It all depends on the language of the laws involving archery only areas. Now, whether that is merely accomplished by some verbal agreement or whether there are actual laws that need to have their language amended I really don't know. Again, it just may be something that has slipped through the cracks and not been thought of. I have to admit that I am not familiar with the laws regulating archery only areas. I've never hunted them, and probably never will, and so I have never read anything about fine points of hunting in those areas. That's why I asked the question. Actually, I'm not sure just how thoroughly the new law has been gone over and how much of what we may consider to be logical has even been thought of regarding the implementation of crossbows. So I just thought I would ask to see if anyone has run across some of those details and seen such things actually written down. Doc Actually, it will most likely depend on the individual areas, since there is no set law in place governing archery only areas. I re-read the bill, but it doesnt specify anything on archery only areas, only what seasons a crossbow can be used in. I dont see why they would exclude them from archery only areas, thats the only way they will make any type of an impact on the deer herd short of allowing them into archery season.
