cool thats kinda what i imagined.Too bad it was so damn cold that morning. My feet were in pain and in the first stages of frost bite so i had to leave about an hour after that fiasco.I never seen or heard action like that in the post rut. Those are the reasons i love to hunt.

no.pretty sure it wasn't another hunter.Where the first long series of grunts came from was along a pond.Only way to get there is by the powerlines and you can see if any one entered by the raod. And i checked for prints and saw none.So it was an animal.Pretty sure it was some deer grunting to each other.I just never heard it like that before.Never heard deer be that vocal. The steady grunt while walking was on my property and no human tracks. The grunt didn't sound like you always hear on tv or you tube.It sounded like a whinded grunt.Softer than the typical tending grunt.Hard to exxplain really but cool nonetheless. Guess they are way more vocal than i thought.

This morning was beuitifull.Silent and calm.It was so cold that the trees were cracking.Could hear a pin drop at 1000 yards.LOL. About 8 am i heard a grunt that was like about 1.5 seconds long about 200 yrds to my right..Then about 1 min later i heard it again.About 1 and a half seconds long.Wasn't a quick brrp like i heard before. It was a brrrrrrrp.I replied with the same length and tone grunt.I then heard one to my right about 100 yds in the thickit. That one was the same lenth.A long brrrrrrrp. We dwere comunicating for about 15 mins then nothing for about a half hr.Then i heard a grunting noise that was like a winded grunt.Weird, cause iv'e never head a grunt like this before. It was brrp, brrp, brrp, brrrp. Each like a second or two apart.Almost didn't even sound like a deer but like a dog coughing and burping at the same time.I could hear it go down the trail on my property and up the hill towards the house. When i went home i saw tracks that went that direction that were fresh. Now my question is was it likely a buck on the trail of a hot doe. There wern't any other tracks though. And was that long brrrrp the locating grunt.I always thought the locating grunt went brrp brrrrrrrp. I know its hard to imagine what it sounded like from just typing but if you heard this you know what i mean.

spike,4pt,6pt, all 1.5 Yr old----genetics?
arrow nocker replied to arrow nocker's topic in Deer Hunting
I found this gem of info to my own question. From now on spike=tenderloin. enjoy. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_lf_w7000_0247.pdf -
Ok,we all kinda want qdm and we all like meat.Well while sitting on watch i was thinking. It is late season.Havn't seen anything opening wknd. What if one of the spikes i passed on this archery was to show up.Would i shoot it.Hmmm.Tuff.I need the meat.I have 6 kids, and they don't know the diff between beef and deer when in burger. We already put a spike in the freezer.Would i shoot a spike again if it walked by? I know i would shoot a 6 pointer cause that would be my best to date.Hell a 4 pt would be my best rack yet.LOL. But here is where i am like wait.Isn't a spike possibly the same age as one of the average 6 points around here.A button buck is obviously 1/2 yr old.I saw few during archery.Small body deer. The spike I got was a big body deer.I don't have a scale but had to be close to 150-160 dressed out.Now that had to be a 1 12 yr old deer. The 6 pts i saw were close in size but maybe somewhat bigger body. And i believe to be also 1.5 yrs old. Now this is my question.Wouldn't it be better to pass on the 6 and shoot the spike. They are most likely the same age right.(Unless one of the 6pts has poorer genetics and is a 2.5 yr old)The spike probably has poorer genitics and should be in the freezer.Right.The 6 would be a nice buck nxt yr. Another words my question is: Isn't the spike the same age as the 4 pt and 6 pt and if i was somewhat practicing QDM,the spike should be taken instead of the 6 point?

season winding down, and am a little curious
arrow nocker replied to ameridear's topic in Deer Hunting
I will be using the mzl.I like the challenge of the bow but right now i really need the meat so i have to opt for the sure shot and distance of the 50 cal. -
I learned how to butcher a deer also this year.Kinda winged it.Watched some vids and called my unk. I learned i only care for archery season any more cause all the slobs that come out of the wood work in gun season. I learned that sometimes you have to take chances.Sometimes i believe a certian stand will be productive but learned that you never know for sure.Skill can be nothing without pot luck sometimes.Sometimes it is a good choice to just wing it and play the wind with a spot you aren't too comfortable with but might yeild some results.Like just stalking to a spot and crouching behind a bush with the wind to your favor.Instead of just sitting in a "favorite stand". Movement is a give away. The more i move the less i will see.I learned to just sit as still and quiet as possible.Moving my eyes and just verry slowly moving my head.keeeping everything else as still as possible. I grunted less also.I listened to the woods.I saw many deer during archery and very seldom heard a grunt. Most of the time i did it was another hunter.I learned that maybe some of my not seeing so much deer in the past was to my ill grunting manner.I tried to bring in unseen deer with a grunt tube. But all the time it is possible i was just making them aware of my presence and pushing them away. I learned how deer are somewhat repettative to their habbits. They like to travel the same trails but you can't just hunt the trail.During the day they aren't always on the trail. While brousing they seem to meander.Off the trail. So if i am just hunting trails I might not be too satisfied. They may be close to the trail but not close enough to give you a shot. Tree selection has changed for me somewhat too.I have sat in trees this year i havn't sat in before with my cliber.I mostly passed on them cause the foliage around them was kinda thick. Not being completly confident shot with the bow i passed on the thicker stuff.I learned that that is were you see the most action.Which is the next main thing i learned. I learned that being confident with your shot and yardage is verry important while hunting bow.I lost a nice buck this yr cause of it.I am going to practice 3d way more this year even though it is different than a live animal i will be alott more confident and that is what mattters. I learned that Human pee will stop a doe in her tracks just to smell it.And it don't alarm her. I learned how much of an impression i make on my little ones when i take them with me hunting. My 10 yr old son is infactuated with the art of hunting. That i am going to get him into 3d shooting with me this yr.My 6 yr old daughter loves to be in the woods and thinks deer are "beutifull" I learned that i am so gratefull to have a place to hunt behind my house that i don't have to travel hours to get to and can see deer. And have the opportunity to pass on deer before even bagging a first one.It could at any time be the last year i could hunt it.And i learned this yr i am so gratefull to have the opportunity to hunt it.

Ya i wanted to get a helmet cam for this.I was going to get one for race season so i could tape the race from inside the car and it would be nice to be able to just srap it to your head and hunt.

feeder?????

interesting.I often run this through my head too.If i hang the estrus and it scares a already breeded doe that might be passing thru, that would suck.It might bring in a curious buck. But "might" is the key word.Might scare one off too.I have tried it and didn't produce any thing. So this year i mostly gambled on luck and stealthness.Being as invisible as possible. It has worked better than the past couple years did with scents and sounds. It all depends on the area tho.50/50 chance.Spook or attract.

the fun part is following a rub line in june or july when scouting new woods.

put the step father in jail.If you put your child in their car seat do you not make sure the shoulder straps are on your kid?I mean come on.If the kid was driving, hunting, chilling, learning or whatever. The FATHER is the kids GUARDIAN!!!!!!I have step kids and they are my responsibility. My daughter always likes to pull her shoulder staps off when i am parked for a bit and forgets to put them back on when i start to drive. It is my responsibilty as a parent or guardian to make sure she has them on and be safe!!!!I race cars and she has seen me wreck so she knows how important it is to have them on.But she is 6.She don't think like a grown up. My 10 year old son does every thing i do.I am his role model. If i walk through the woods and act like a slob hunter and don't practice safety....He will do the same thing.I have to have him at my side and explain every move. When i take my little ones into the wood.....I don't expect to see much deer. They are always excited but dissapointed. They expect to see way more. They are over excited at every sound.Move every second. And whisper every three. After 45 minuits are ready to go home or take a nap.OHHH...GOTTA LOVE HUNTING WITH THE KIDS.This is the age i will never forget. This is when i make the biggest example!!! The father wasn't doing his job.I am sorry. If he was the shooter would have never shot that directon.Putting your responsibility into harms way is foolish!!!!!No excuses!!! Even though the shooter should have known what he was shooting at.That kid shouldv'e been glowing just like his guardian and right at his side so he could learn to not do that when he was old enough to be on his own.

Its because deer can read minds they know when you are planning on hunting them.LOL

I CAN'T WAIT.WOOHOO..

I didn't think they were still rubbing on trees now.Seen some before that seemed really late season but couldn't really tell how old they were.Interesting.How late do they rub on trees till?Is it just a chase phase thing only.Is it possible they might be feeling somewhat aggressive if there is a couple late season does in estrus and rub on some trees. Rattling would probably only scare any bucks away this time of year.A bleat can might be productive if used right. If not they might be able to tell it isn't a real deer and you will never even know if there was any deer in the area. This time of year they are feeding and yarding up.i am not a pro but i think the best tactic for my self is hunting the trails from bedding to feeding and just being as quiet and invisible as possable. hell i am just learning too tho.I tried all kinds of grunting and bleating this time of year and saw nothing.I stayed quiet and saw deer.Coincidence?Maybe. If he is still alive he will be back.Or atleast near by.He will be hitting the same scrapes from the last year in oct and nov.

Doubt that guy will ever want to hunt again if you ask me.He almost killed a little boy.He is probably still in shock.Think he is going to go out there again and blast at something in the bushes.I doubt it.He should loose his hunting provliges just cause it make sence to take them to punnish him. But maybe the step father should be charged with endangerment. Its the parent's responsibility for the childs safety.

a guy i know has the z7 and loves it.He bought the monster and said it was a brutal bow.He sold it a week later.Says the z7 is super forgiving though. This guy shoots alott too.

Rain and high winds tomorrow...some questions...
arrow nocker replied to blackradio's topic in Deer Hunting
found out your first learning experiance.Deer can read minds. If you plan on a tactic they sence it and know you are coming.Indians used to not think or speak of the hunt prior just because the deer could hear them.LOL. LOL.It will all come together sooner or later.Thats why hunting is so much fun and addicting.Even if i don't get a deer i had fun. That is all worth it.Took me 5 yrs to get a deer.Passed on a bunch too tho.Took my son 3hrs.He didn't plan or think.I said sit here. The deer came buy 60 seconds later.Telling ya they hear your thoughts.LOL. -
wouldn't sugest sawing through the hide.Hair would be all in your meat.Go to youtube and watch how to butcher a deer.It is really easy to quarter one up.
-
even though the shooter should have known the target i also blame the step dad.If i take my little ones in the woods we both look like two huge bright orange pumkins walking through the wood!!!An orange hat on a 3ft tall kid don't cut it.Kid should have had a vest on too and father should have had on enough orange that teh hunter shouldv'e seen the father. And the kid shouldv'e been standing right next to the father. Thats just plain stupid.Guys like that make me SO ANGRY!!!!!

you have to bring the head with you so that you can prove its gender. The bones can be left behind. Its posted on the dec website or in the book somewhere. Its almost an assured thing for some one that hunts way back in the aderandacks to have back pack it.

the problem with c-meer deer is it supposedly stays in ground for up to a year.Which is the main reason feeding is illeagal.Concentrating the deer into one spot and possibly spreading the desease through contact or saliva. If you were to spray it on a stump they would be all licking the same stump and possibly spread CWD. I am guilty of using it for a cover scent.I sprayed it on my boots and body.I used to carry a little 2 oz sprayer in my pouch and spray it in the air when on watch. If used in that situation i don't see how it is illegal. You aren't then baiting or feeding deer.It is the same as using apple spray or other attrractants. It is when you spray concentrated ammounts of it on the ground you are breaking the rules for feeding or baiting deer. Nothing on the dec website states that a cover scent or attractant is illegal. I think it depends on how you use it. This arguement can go on for ever tho.
