  1. It was it beautiful afternoon for a walk. I put several miles on the boots but only managed to bring one pathetic little dinky shed home.
  2. Only made it out for about an hour this afternoon for basically just a quick scouting walk and picked up a couple more
  3. He definitely would have been a good one this year. I stumbled on to 3 yearling buck deadheads during yesterday's shedding adventures.
  4. Found 7 today, bringing my total for the season to 38, my new single season record. Nothing too great but I like every one I pick up....
  5. 5 more today, making 30 on the season so far. One real nice one and matched one up from a couple weeks ago...
  6. This is definitely the most unique I've ever picked up...
  7. Slim pickings today, hitting up areas I've hit already waiting for the snow to melt in the woods. Found 4, putting me at 25 for the season and surpassing my goal of reaching 300 career sheds. Quality has been crap so far.
  8. Skunked today but picked up two more yesterday...one chewed up oldie and half to this little stud 1.5 yo 9pt
  9. Unique to match that up like that!
  10. I nearly found this awesome deadhead today too. As luck would have it, they gave this kid permission to walk the farml today. When I happened on him he had literally just found this deer and was standing there taking pictures of it. Had I been there a minute sooner it would have been mine. I am so sick right now...
  11. Five more today. My goal is to hit the 300 career mark his spring...at 294 now. A reminder...this ain't Iowa. Lol
  12. #11 resurfaced after some melt off...
  13. It may be a little bit of a wait yet LOL
  14. Whoa...intuition or what? Lol https://huntingny.com/forums/topic/95904-the-fletch-buck/
  15. I was instructed to trudge through the knee deep snow to get some "red barn" pics...
  16. It all fairness, that was not the finished version. He looks a little better now LOL. He's on the outgoing wall completely ready to make the trip back home this weekend!
  17. My biggest shed ever was a road shed. I typically would find one or two that way every year but haven't had one in the past two years now. I'm due.
  18. IMHO, I'd rank them in the same category for reliability. Here are 2 different bucks from my own personal collection. Both are deadheads that I picked up, both of which I have history with. Both have the same length skull. On the right is a 3.5 yo, on the left a buck that is at least 8.5 based on several years of sheds /trail cam pics...
  19. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. All four of these are local Steuben County bucks. On the bottom are two average 3.5 yo type deer for this area. Above them are fully mature bucks.
  20. After mounting 200+ NY bucks over the past 6 years...I'd say skull size isn't a great indicator of age. Most 3.5 yr old bucks have an eye to nose measurement of 7.25" but some will go 7.5". Older bucks will typically require a 7.5" form but can also go 7.25". Between these two sizes 90% of the deer I get in will be covered. Every year you get a few larger bucks in that 7.75-8" range. I think only 2 of the 40+ deer I took in last fall and one cape donor buck will take a form with an ETN measurement >7.5". In 2020,I took 3 in over 8" (including my own and 2 others that were both shot by forum members here). That being said, once you cut the skull plate off you can instantly tell the age class of a buck by the thickness of the skull plate. A fully mature 5-6.5 yo buck's skull plate will be 2-3x thicker than that of a 3.5yo. So, I guess I'd say the weight of a skull is it better indicator than the size.
