  1. Looks like a heck of a good time, anybody ever go to this? Past experiences good/bad?
  2. With the past two weeks hitting some extreme lows temp wise, it got me thinking, what is your favorite base layer, let's just say hunting looking like the Michelin man isnt enjoyable, especially while bow hunting, Any thoughts?
  3. Had a great season, saw a lot of action in the woods while bow hunting in Westchester, spent a good amount of time with the guys at rifle camp, had one lousy day when the atv broke down a couple miles away from camp and had to walk back..... BUT the best part of the season was hands down getting another person into the sport and showing him how to hunt, very rewarding and I think we're gonna be hunting pals for a while.....
  4. Jameson on the rocks, my go to year round.....a bottle is always stashed at the cabin upstate for the guys (mostly me hahaha)
  5. Gonna be up there this week in Preston Hollow, hope to get lucky as it's been tough this year for our group of guys, 4H is some difficult hunting, been at it for over ten years, nothing like bow hunting in Westchester, congrats sherlockagel and adkhunter some solid bucks you got!
  6. I got my 11-87 sportsman when I was 19, was my first gun, worked hard for that purchase, but I certainly love it, very reliable, I've been hunting with that thing ever since, I've taken numerous deer, turkey and small game with it, I do feel Remington's quality especially with their ammo has gone down hill, won't even consider buying their ammo
  7. Personally I love wearing my old school filson red wool jacket while gun hunting, i wouldn't feel right walking in the woods without that jacket and my charcoal color wool pants, guess I have an old soul but I think there's too much hype with camo in regards to deer hunting, guys wore that wool setup for many years and shot countless deer with it turkey and predator hunting I feel might be a different story tho....
  8. Just got back my bow buck, I have to say they did a kick ass job with everything, really satisfied with their work and the owner joe was a nice guy, will be returning hopefully with another buck.....
  9. Dear lord, that's a rifle I'd put over the fire place!
  10. Congratulations, first one with the bow is always a great feeling, regardless of the size, happy for you!!!
  11. Make sure to get out there and vote!! Went out earlier this morning, I'm always amazed every time I do go to vote that I don't see young people taking more of a interest, always bothered me!
  12. Personally, I've been using G5 products since I began bow hunting 10 years ago, never had an issue with them and have always done their job well, I don't use the Deadmeat broadhead, rather their Montec CS broadhead, I say give it a try, I hear so many mixed things about Rage...
  13. on the many occasions that I've been in the field when the wind is HOWLING ( 4H is crazy with its wind) deer movement seems to shut down, not saying I haven't seen them while its windy. I say go enjoy the afternoon regardless, can't catch anything while at home on the couch.
  14. Zag I think that's sound advice, I set him up with my old bow, so when we bow hunt I'll make sure his shots are at that distance and not stressing on difficult shots...
  15. So a friend of mine decided this is the year he is gonna dive in and learn how to hunt, GREAT! Ecstatic to hear the news.... then It dawned on me, I've never really mentored somebody in hunting, I've done the basics with him, range practice/scouting etc, being a teacher in the woods is a whole new aspect for me....... For the most part we all learned how to hunt from somebody and those memories of learning the sport were some of the best memories made (at least for me), my question for the community is this, what should I focus on with him this year, anybody care to share their experiences of being a teacher, rewarding/not so much.....?
  16. So I got a chance at a public land buck this week and put him down, was really happy to see everything come together this year, he wasn't a trophy by any means (young buck) but I'm looking forward to having some quality meat in my freezer.... Reflecting back on this years bow hunting experience, my take aways are that putting in the hard work & working intelligently often put you in a better position on public property to find success... I hunt mostly private property upstate so bowhunting on public land has taught me a great deal about hunting in general, anybody feel similar about hunting on public property?
  17. I've seen my father back in the day smoking a cigar walking into the woods and end up getting a decent buck, hunting is truly bizarre sometimes, we still laugh about that hunt to this day, I say drink your coffee and enjoy the time out there
  18. Okay what's your guys opinion on state land, hunting near somebody's tree stand, I was in the woods the other day, got in there and all set up to only realize 75 yards away is a ladder stand, I got pissed off cuase now there is a possibility of Joe Shmoe coming in and ruining my afternoon hunt, my thought is this, guys put up stands all over state property, which is fine, but it almost makes me a little annoyed as to the entitlement to a spot, the hunter did come in eventually and it was a pleasant conversation, I guess it's just the whole marking the area with "my tree stand" gets me annoyed, any thoughts???
  19. Funny, I was just explaining to my GF its not gonna be like summer time in October/November, wasn't a happy lady hearing that but I think she understands for the most part my obsession with hunting, she just looks at me like I'm crazy whenever I talk about anything hunting related, For the married guys, how do you explain your great escape every fall, any advice for the newbie?
  20. This thread got me thinking for sure, I can see how hunters might be against this way of pursuing bear and that's fine, to each their own, in the end we're all part of the hunting community, right?..... Having just gotten back from Maine and connecting with a bear, first off I think about the folks up in the area where we do the hunting and how appreciative they are for all the business we bring, they don't have a lot (financially speaking), the hunters who come up that way do a lot of good for their economy during Bear season, secondly it's not a guaranteed thing that your gonna get a bear, yes it increases your odds over bait, but not every one goes home with a bear, it's just a different tactic for pursuing game, if it's not for you that's ok, not gonna put down another guy/gal for being out there legally pursuing game...
  21. You know I always found this interesting, I both bow hunt and gun hunt in 4H, now some years (most years) I get denied the doe permit for that area, however every single season, if I want, I can shoot a doe with my bow in that area, just seems a little ridiculous how they come down on gun hunters and not the whole hunting community
  22. This was one of our larger bears, was really happy for my pal
  23. So we were in Wytopitlock Maine, which is all the way up there near Houlton, about a eight hour ride but always turns into a ten hour car ride after a quick stop into Cabelas
