  1. Pretty sure that one has been on the Federal books a long time. Seems like I remeber that one from the 1960s in Illinois & Indiana.
  2. Again, people can't differentiate a question from a ststement. According to "conservatine" views, "wealth has its privilges".
  3. To buy one from CMP you must participate in & complete a CMP program. They then issue you a certificate to purchace an M1. My son, my wife & I have all participated & have certificates. The CMP Garands are getting picked over and may not even be available at this point. Most that were available 7-8 years ago were Danish or Greek surplus that were distribited to NATO allies years ago when the M1 was replaced with more modern weapons in NG armories. A #s matched Garand W/O foriegn markings is worth a small fortune. Ditto on the approprate loads. Slow powders that reach peak pressure after the bullet has passed the gas port are hard on the Op rod & mechanism.
  4. Spring gobbler season is awesome for kids, the Owl calling & gobblers answering in the darkness. I never got a shot at a Tom when my little boy was with me, but he got lots of thrills & got to hear more than one gobbler.
  5. I think that depends on what your daughter wants. Josh was so so small when I took him spring gobbler hunting that he sat snuggled between my legs in the pre-dawn darkness.
  6. At 3:00 in this video it shows exatly what MACHINIST is saying about pulling the sides back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bgkKMHqJ6c
  7. I like having a seat when hunting on the ground. Even if it sets up quickly it commits me to staying put & moving around less. I too would like to see more PIX of how this stows for carry. If it's a PITA to carry, it won't be worth it.
  8. Few people these days have incomes that would support spending like that. If you don't think those fines are stiff enough, maybe the fines should be on a sliding scale according to income?
  9. Spring Turkey season is a great time to take little ones out because the weather is warm. Same thing for squirrel season. When Josh was about 5 or 6 I took him squirrel hunting. We lived in Southern Indiana & it's quite balmy in late August when the squirrells get to cutting.. We heard some Grays cutting in a cherry tree. I had Josh stand still while I slipped around the base of the tree. Soon I spotted a squirrel & dropped it with the 22rf. I looked over at Josh & put my finger to my lips to signal him to stay quiet. A few minuutes later I spied another Gray & nailed that one too. It fell out of the tree between us. He couldn't be quiet any more after all that excitement. That was all we got that morning. I showed him how to make a forked stick to carry them. About a week later he came home from school with a picture of those 2 squirrels hanging from a stick with the biggest smiles on their faces. There were also 2 stick figures, me & him. The stick man that represented me had a beard.
  10. I think he was referring to me. It's just the typical response when every one of the points that were cited in his post were debunked. And I wonder what he was refering to when he mentioned my saved? What is the heck is my saved? I didn't even realize I had one.
  11. I used to take my son along when squirrel hunting. He was so small I had to carry him through tall weeds. He would get up with me in the wee hours to tag along on spring turk-tee hunts. In his late teens he lost interest, but this year, at 25, he got really fired up about deer hunting. Planting the seed when they're young sometimes takes a while to sprout, but it's still there.
  12. Well it works both ways. I had a BIG 4-point that was the dominant buck on my place. He had me pattered & gave me the slip for 3 easosn until I did something unusual & he slipped up. 4 1/2 years old & he weighed 219# dressed. Never saw a decent "rack buck" on my place until I killed him. I've taken four 8-points since then, 2 of them pretty nice, but none have weighed as much as that big 4-point.
  13. They claim deer can sense barometric changes. I seem to see more during those times. I see the most movement following a few days of bad weather right after & for several hours after it breaks. They don't like nasty conditions any better than you or I & they will go on the feed when they sense bad weather coming. The evening I saw the 5 deer was the 1st evening after the snow, it was pretty windy, but then at ground level the cedars/hemlocks & thick brush block a lot the wind that I feel 15' up at rhe end of a 250 yard wind tunnel. My son didn't hunt that day. He works until noon on Saturdays. The following day I only saw 2 deer & he jumped one I was watching on his way out. I got to watch it unfold. That was the only deer he saw. if he had hunted the day before, 3 of the deer I saw would have been about 35yds up/crosswind of his favorite ladder stand, "the penthouse". The way one of them acted, I think there had been a buck in the immediate area too.
  14. I would rather play with 4-stroke Hemi-Head internal combustion engines on fixed wing 9' span R/C aircraft. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdmLu13UJzs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xaiAR8Yelc Much more effective for driving deer than some little electric gizmo. A lot bigger & a lot more noise. And yeah, that's my voice in the videos (not me in the still) & you can see my deer hunting spot across the road during some scenes in the vids.
  15. I'm working on restoring it to similar/slightly improved condition to what it was in 1958 when my Dad bought it from his best friend in 1958. I was able to get it to this condition so Josh could hunt with it this year. It really got him fired up. And yeah, it's some pretty potent Whiletail medicine.
  16. I watched the only Canvasback I have ever seen in my life fly up the river across the same scene in the picture. I'm losing track of how many Bald eagles I have seen over the years. I got a picture of one just around the corner a few years back.
  17. Give a while. If you don't have lots of browse & or conifers in the area, the deer may migrate to an area that does. When we had 2-3" of crusty snow a few weeks back, I saw 5 different deer, 3 singles & 1 pair, in my woods in the 2 hours before sunset one evening. All were moving naturaly feeding. That's pretty good for my woods. There are no crop fields within 1/2 mile or more. Of the approximately 40 wooded acres, there is a 15 acre area near the center that was selectively harvested in the winter of '98/'99 They took almost 300K board feet of white pines that averaged about 29" at the stump. Lots of small 2nd growth pine mature maples & browse surrounded by cedars & hemlocks with some small patches of oaks here & there. It doesn't have a large number of resident deer until the snow covers up the mast & left over corn around the area. During hard winters they yard up in the cedars in late December. Damned deer walk in my XC ski tracks. Lazy bastards.
  18. Time to get on the X-C skis & scout for next year's buck.
  19. My definition of a "stand" is where ever you sit/stand to hunt deer. It might be an elevated box blind or a spot at the base of a tree where you have cleared away the leaves so you can shift positions quietly. It might be anywhere in between. Being "on stand" is watching, listening for a deer to aproach so you can take it.
  20. Couldn't we have gotten this a week ago? (picture taken out of my kitchen/deck doors this morning) The cedars & hemlocks at the back end of my property would be swarming with deer after this much snow covered up all the acorns & left over corn. My son might have been able to connect with his grandpa's 30/40 Krag.
  21. I missed it the 1st time around. A bit hokey, but it does a good job af showing the differece in visability under hunting conditions.
  22. Seems that plenty of "right end folks" want laws that infringe on other's rights. But, oh, that's different. Ducks & turkeys see color, deer do not. Bow hunters must get very close to game & even after raising the bow, make a lot more movement drawing a bow compared to aiming a rifle & squeezing a trigger. Non of these examples are likely to result in a fatality under all but the most extraordinary circumstances. Safe hunters (not wearing BO) are shot by idiots all the time. Those wearing BO are seldom shot by the same idiots. Check the stats. The argument that mandatory BO would cause even more wreckless behavior is so ludacrous, it reflects on anyone making such a statement as grasping at straws to support their view. I guess that mandatory seat belt use & motorcycle helmet laws cause people to drive/ride more wrecklessly too right? The point of this thread was a question of whether the majority of us would be open to accepting mandatory BO in exchange for extending the shooting hours to allow hunting during the best time to shoot a mature buck. As usual, knee jerk "right end people" jump to conclusions.
  23. I put more emphasis on supporting American workers than "American companies". "American companies can claim that status W/O emplying anyone here in manufacturing. then, to rub salt into the wounds, they dodge taxes 7 stash $$$ in offshore havens. Somewhere this snowball has to be slowwed down then stopped or there are only going to be a few fortunate sons that can live a comfortable lifestyle. We'll all be poaching the Walton's & Koch brother's deer to survive. Germany has the highest labor costs in the world, yet they have a trade surplus & make more automobiles, within Germany itself, than the U S of A. Why is that?
