Making a ATV Dolly / Trailer? Anyone do one?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of making a ATV Dolly / Trailer.  So I can tow crap in, wood, ladders, etc.

I was thinking of getting to tires like this: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200414740_200414740

Then mount a trailer coupler on the front of the trailer like this: http://www.amazon.com/Quick-Lock-Trailer-Couplers-Class-III/dp/B000AYG0DW

I have a ball on my ATV....

Make the dolly out of treated wood, about 6 to 8 feet long.

Still up in the air about the design, any suggestions?

John...check these out--

http://www.harborfreight.com/material-handling/pneumatic-tires/10-inch-knobby-tire-43612.html

Pretty reasonable price and they are rated for 300# each

If you didn't want to do any metal on it I bet you could use a 4x4 for the tongue and use the hitch you included.

Just have to add the axle rod for these tires. I like my wagons low and wide so when I carry stuff on uneven trails they are less likely to tip over

One final word of advice:

Don't over engineer the flooring or framing! Maybe deck boards instead of 2" lumber?

You'll be adding extra weight and that will reduce what your ATV will safely pull.

I've got a pretty good Otter plastic tub trailer I have filled with over a 1000# of gravel.

My Bombardier Traxter 500cc ATV will pull it but it's a task.

Even with 1/2 - 3/4 face cord of wood in the trailer, you can feel the ATV is working!

No so much the cc but what abuse the rear axel will tolerate.

Thought about the same thing myself, but decided not to.

My property is wet and I have aggressive mud tires on my ATV.

Don't think a tractor could get into the areas I do.

I drive over stone fences, blaze trails over saplings, retrieve deer with the winch, carry my chainsaw & tools in the front compartment.

It's just too convienent to trade-in for a tractor.

Anyways - back to burmjohn's topic.
