growalot
Seeing the first Hemp/soybean plot was devoured and droughted out...even though the soybeans are now doing great...I decided to take pics now of new planting of same....it just came up and dang the deer are wiping it out already...I was hoping the bracc would have enough to to hide the hemp some but it grows too fast...notice the deer browsed around the young soybeans to eat the hemp...since I disced...seeded then harrowed it in ...some seed went deeper than others ..hopefully helping to refill the plot as the braccs grow...Then a pic of my Hazel nuts...which really like the fertilizer I spread on hemp plot.... landtracdeerhunter
Wow, thought I had rock on the knolls, lol. So the deer prefer the hemp to the soybeans. Something never would of expected. Something there they liked. Did u ever try sugar beets mixed with turnips or tillage radish, for a late plot? Shooting for some type of replacement for the corn, pumpkins, failed to get in. Any other suggestions for another winter carb. feed? Thanks. growalot
Joe...from a place in Oregon years ago...they were whips and cost me a 1.00 apiece...Of course several years ago Harris seed bought them out and stopped selling young cheap nursery stock....but you can find them in most nursery catalogs...I rarely ever get nuts to use for us....it's amazing how fast the critters gobble them up Yes I just checked my Ground Hog radish and they are coming up spotty and I'm not seeing much rye either...new ground...but limed the heck out of it a month ago ???perhaps harrowed in deeper than I thought ...will give it another good rain and a couple of days then hit it with rape seed...Well if it ever arrives I have WTI forage oats coming in...Damn Gander Mnt.....Any how ....Rocks!!!! that field is AFTER 7yrs of de-rocking ..lol...rabbits have nothing on how fast a good winter of frost heaving can multiply rocks here... Fantail
How well do you think the soybeans will come back next year? Having a similar issue with a soy/peas/milo mix.
growalot
Not sure what you mean..but here goes...the QH soybeans are the reseeding type but usually only in the south...the original planting I did is growing way beyond what I thought it would ...considering how hard they got hit once the hemp was gone and then the plot being only 2 years in.... was taken over by weeds...I mean thick weeds...but when the rains came the weeds hid them enough and now they are thick and have runners 2ft long...the more the deer chomp them the faster they grow!! Today I discovered they grow great in shade too....I over seeded and shaded area in braccs..after hemp and beans we're eaten...the only thing to come back and grew are the beans...Now they will frost kill ..but...being in such weed cover...they may last much longer in the plot than anticipated...
