steve863
I dont follow politics at all, but I dont mind this law. I work in NYC and I see millions of obese people everyday. I'm sick of looking at fatties! As long as I can still order 22oz. beers at Happy Hour, I'm happy! DOWN WITH THE FATTIES! You think NYC has fatties, take a trip down to the deep south or other rural areas in this country. NYC actually has more fit people than other places. I vacationed in a rural part of NH this summer and stopped off at their Walmart. Couldn't believe all the obese people on scooters, with oxygen, etc. I thought I entered the twilight zone or something.
virgil
The law does not state that it's illegal to drink any quantity of soda; only that it cannot be sold/purchased in containers over a certain size in certain settings. Yes, if someone is so motivated to consume such ridiculous quantities of soda, they can do it legally. It'll just cost them more- just like people who are so motivated to smoke can still buy cigarettes, but have to pay huge taxes on them. Elmo
Beer should be safe- especially beers that are high in alcohol content. Not to worry. Beer is safe only because people faught for that right. The soda ban shares some similarities the prohibition. Only difference is the attitude of fighting for ones rights isn't what it use to be apparently.
Culvercreek hunt club
SO Joe walks into Burger King and they have the self serve fountains. Are we going to post a cop at each one of those to make sure the 64 oz super king sized cup is actually having Diet put in it? Joe can still buy large size in Diet but who is going to police him to make sure that is what he put in the cup? Oh and you haven't touched the comment about since this is such a plague on society...why a food stamp program still allowed to purchase the sugary drinks? Elmo
Just a side note. I've never heard of an innocent kid being killed by a driver who had one too many sodas that night.
BizCT
I will stay out this one going forward, but honestly....who cares? you can still drink as much soda as you want, etc. Once no stores sell the big amounts, everyone will forget about the days when you could buy bigger sizes. Did you ever consider that getting the consumer to pay more will only add to McDonald's or Burger King's profits where more money will be put in research & development to put out even more artery clogging fast food?? People need to LEARN what is good to eat and what isn't. Yeah, it's a big problem in this country, but it all stems from people wanting things the easy way. A lot easier to buy prepared foods than to actually cook it yourself. Women want to work, so there is NO time to cook for the kids. It's all a chain reaction of bad choices society has made here. A stupid law like this won't fix anything.
Elmo
First they came for the socialists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.

virgil
That's deep Elmo. Culver- I agree with you completely on the Food Stamps thing. But, not sure if that's something that a mayor can do anything about. I'd assume that's a federal program. As far as the enforcement thing, you're being ridiculous. Do we have a cop posted on every single road to enforce the speed laws? No,
steve863
I'm loving this thread actually. We are close to a 3rd page in less than an hour. The quickest dust up in a good while around here. LOL
Culvercreek hunt club
Oh....starbucks drinks in Venti...those are 20 oz and some have as much sugar as sodas. why not ice cream. who needs two scoops? Let's make stores only serve single scoops. Simple starch foods ....Oh pasta...mmmmmm let's make it illegal to serve over a single serving. 2 ounces. Hell let's do it with all foods. Illegal to serve or sell over what is considered a single serving. Let's make it illegal to consume over 1800 calories in a day. It is for the betterment of society right? Never seems to be a big deal and may make sense on the surface. But where should it stop. If it truely makes sense for one step...why not take it all the way? virgil
Again, you're being ridiculous to try to prove a point. Noone has even suggested any of these silly examples because they are not considered to be significant causes of the obesity epidemic. BizCT
I guess you wouldn't until the come for one of your freedoms. Come on man, it would never happen in our lifetimes. Just like guns, nobody is ever going to walk into every household in the world and take away each and every gun....like they say on ESPN, COME ON MAN! Too many more important things to put decent thought to than arguing about why you should be able to big sodas lol. Lets argue about crossbows in the archery season or baiting in NY or why 2 buck tags isn't enough for me!

virgil
Culver, you're pissing up a tree now. Yes, sugary foods are not good either. But, studies have proven that consumption of sugary drinks is the worst offender. You need to let go of this silly fear that everyone in government has a hidden agenda to take away your 'freedom'. Culvercreek hunt club
The drinks are the problem. How many of you have seen the person sitting on two chairs In McDonalds...couple big macs, large fries, nice hot fudge sundae and a diet coke. Come on you got the visual and you know you have...lol

It's not the goverment so much as a degradation of personal accountability. Muslim women have to wear a hijab (the robe covering) because by Islamic law, men can not control themselves so it is the fault of the woman for presenting temptation. Let's change the words a little. Business cannot serve sugary drinks over 20 ozs because by Bloomberg's law, people cannot control themselves so it is the fault of businesses to present temptation.

You know when it comes to guns, I tend to agree with you and Biz-R-O. I don't see anyone taking them away anytime soon. Just way too many in private possession for anyone to ever confiscate them all. But, when it comes to laws such as this, it really takes things to a different level. To me it isn't even about freedom, but about who the hell are they to tell me what type of foods I should eat? I know some foods are better than others, but many will tell you meat causes cancer, is bad for the heart, etc. Should I now not be able to buy some beef or chicken because some bunny huggers don't want us killing cattle or chicken and are influencing the medical profession to keep telling us it's bad for us. How long will it be before the price of beef and chicken is $50 a pound just because they think it's bad for us and they want us to pay more for it if we want it. Come on now. This law is senseless and you guys darned well know it.
virgil
I don't think the law is senseless. But, I'll agree it's mostly toothless. All of the responses here seem like a bunch of hysterical nonsense to me.
