WhitetailAddict11
Like most passionate hunters, me and my buddy spend a lot of late nights discussing just about anything and everything that has to do with hunting. We have talked before about how cool it would be to bow hunt elk in the ADK's seeing how the landscape seems very suitable for an elk population. Without anyone getting all upset, or making a big mess out of this post, I'm curious what my fellow NY hunters think about this. If you think it's a god awful idea then just say that, but no need to cause an uproar, we're all adults here.
Doewhacker
From what I have read here, Elk are grazers and wouldn't do well up north. Much better suited for the Moose that are already there.

nybuckboy
ADK foothills and Catskill foothills would be great. Also Tug hill area. I'd be in favor of elk intro in NY. Areas north of Camden; southern Herkimer county and northern Oneida cty; Delhi, Walton and Stamford regions could hold elk and not too populated. nyantler
The competition for food source would not be good for other animals in the ADK's if elk were introduced

agross
Thought of that exact thing this morning. Watching boone and crocket hunting show on hunting channel and it was about the reintroduction of elk into pennsylvania. Apparently they started with rocky mountain elk that were trapped in yellowstone and that formed the basis of the population. Very cool idea. Obvious issues were that elk had to be in much larger tracts of land than deer.
sampotter
There used to be elk on Whitney park in the 20s and 30s when my great grandad was a caretaker there. They died off due to harsh winters. They looked into introducing polar bears too but luckily decided not to.
