growalot
I read an article in the ODN a few weeks ago that had a picture of a bear in ... what amounted to as a giant ground nest....It talked about how bear are not always burrowing into dens to hibernate but making these "nest"....I thought that a tad unusual as well ... But our son has had the bear walking around his house a good part of this winter...one of his dogs slipped a collar before work...he warned me about the bear when I went to let her back in the house...prints were in the snow all behind his house... growalot
I looked for that article and could not find it...but...found this.. Many dens have a sleeping areas that are higher than the entrance so an igloo-like pocket of air is generated that keeps the bear warm. About one in fifteen black bears don't bother to build a den. Sows even give birth in the open and she and her cubs sleep through the winter while the snow piles up on top of them.
