That NYS has only 2 pristine Finger Lakes left...both being water sources for Rochester and at least one other town,Springwater and they are looking to open them both up the gas fracking...Two lakes that are highly used for fishing ...canoeing...kayaking ...hunting,,,,No homes allowed or boats with motors over 10hp...no swimming...just peaceful enjoyment on the water...Rochester NY had kept it that way always..

They sell to the state and the DEC is hell bent on Fing it up( no apology for that)...yep I'm angry...A public meeting March? I think 14th will be held in Springwater

With things like corporate greed and imminent domain looming over us and largely supported by our leadership theres no telling what will happen to our state forests and waters in the future. I heard something to the effect of a government buyout of peoples home and properties along the shores where Sandy hit. But the kicker is developers have been eyeing those areas along the ocean for years which are mostly smaller middleclass home so called bedroom communities. And our leaders have been questioned about this BUYOUT and the response was, well it isnt a good idea to have people living in an area that will be wiped out every 2 years by a 100 year storm(which is bull those houses were there forever)? But on the same note they are not saying these lands will become park land either, hence drueling developers? Watch for another big corporate capper coming your way New Yorkers...

Growie...I know that Hemlock is one of the lakes you are talking about..

What is the other one ..?..Canadice ?

I very familiar with the central Finger Lakes, ( Keuka, Seneca, Cayuga) but I have not spent much time on the western ones...

Yes those are the two and if any one knows the lay out of the land there then they know that both lakes are located in an area that the surrounding land is sloping hills with major run off feeders....here are a pics of Canadice...They are beautiful quiet lakes that are jewels among the Finger lakes...

I'll be honest...I am sick and tired of the Adirondacks getting all kinds of special attention ...the Catskills and Southeastern portions of the State having all kinds of open park land with Western NY being the redheaded step child of NYS...agree or not that's my opinion..

As a kid I spent many, many days on Canadice. My mom & dad had a place on Lawrence Hill Rd. from 1969-1983. Fishing, swimming (our secret!) hunting and other wonderful things. I had a buddy who lived up the road that I ran with. We had a boat and oars stashed on the west side of the lake. We'd hike down in the dark from the road with lunches, bait and gear. Fish all day and either hike back up or hitch hike back home on Purcell Hill Rd.

Killed more than a bunch of spring gobblers on the side hill also until the ice storm of 1991.

Hemlock was a longer hike but we did it plenty of times. Killed deer & turkey their also, but only on the east side of that lake.

I hope they don't screw up that area...........

This is what they are counting on....it being "new" on the state park listings....not enough ppl will be aware of this area...so there will not be a huge public out cry...I mean really...go to Rochester and mention these two lakes and ppl are clueless....Please guys don't let the greed of a relative few destroy that area...it can NEVER be put back the way it is now.

Look at those beautiful wooded hills in the pics and picture acres of them stripped away to put in drilling rigs...and yes they strip acres of land to put in roads and set up the rig site...

During the summer months, the wife and myself do a bit of hiking over at Canadice lake. There is an old logging road that goes the side of the lake that is now used as a hiking and biking trail. We could go anywhere for a little exercise, but we drive to that specific spot simply because of the beautiful and totally unique landscape that can't be matched in this part of the fingerlakes. I sure would hate to see anything ugly happen to either of those lakes.

Below is just one of the old foundations of the cottages that used to ring the shoreline back in the early 1900's before Rochester bought the lakes and pulled them all down. Brings to mind the "metal detector" thread in the Chit-chat forum ....lol.

And here's one of Hemlock lake:

It was a long struggle to save those lakes from development when Rochester decided to sell. Finally after a few years of lobbying, the DEC bought both lakes and their watersheds. Supposedly all that effort was to preserve the lands for the future. It would be a shame to then have our own DEC offer it all up for destruction.

This will go ahead if ppl don't speak up...send e-mails...letters and stay informed..I would never known had I not decided to watch the weather last night on channel 13...This story was on that station and told of the Springwater meeting..I only caught part of it doing other things waiting for weather...not absolutely sure on date or location...maybe their fire hall I will look it up

i dont believe you have much to worry about at the moment. the drill/frack plan has always been hands off of major water sheds supplying drinking water to municipalities. the finger lakes included. also cuomo is looking for any excuse not to make a decision on fracking. so take this time to have you towns/counties near your lakes, pass local moritoriums on drilling/fracking.

Believe me-we don't have s### for open land down here. Most of the land we did have, is buried beneath expensive houses. Contaminated wells, and run off, are not uncommon here, thanks to development. You would also be hard pressed to find creeks, and main waterways, that aren't polluted in some form or other. The Hudson River, Fishkill Creek, are just two examples.

In fact, the "Southeastern area", really doesn't have much of anything worthwhile when it comes to hunting. Hell, you can't even find any Ruffed Grouse down here anymore. And, quite frankly, nothing is protected down here, when it comes to development. Hell, wetlands have been wiped out for years, for houses. Believe me-we don't have it good at all.

123BVET...looking at the map you posted...the least amount of green or red for that matter is in the Fingerlakes region where I am...These lakes are surrounded by forests many of the properties that where there went into the nature conservancy..... other than one road near Candice there is little in the way of pollutants...

Now as I said you can't undo the things they will do to have these drilling sites...and by the way..NO we are not protected by the water shed..the DEC is in charge of that and they are the decision maker...They own these lakes(state forests)...it was also stated that they have already developed an outline for this plan, wherein allowing 5 years per well.....

I have spoken to several ppl today in the area Dansville to Hemlock...all thinking Oh no this will never happen the water sheds protected....This is how NYS will ruin a natural resource

Grow, if you look at Dutchess County, our "green" sucks also. Believe me, I can relate. The only difference, is that fracking hasn't destroyed our woodlands-houses have. Drills, of course, are not permanent structures. Houses are. We have lost approximately 30% of the woodlands, at least in southern dutchess, within the last 10-15 years. I mean, development has been crazy here.

Now, having said that, I certainly would encourage you to fight the fracking. We know only too well, here, what the end result is, when lands are wiped out.

Totally agree..and I understand the whole housing and Lord help us the infrastructure that surrounds that...that is really controlled as a town to town zoning issue...here we have to deal with the total BS that is NYS....

Ha...I think of that guy that was swallowed up by a sink whole as he slept...I also think back to the whole Retsof salt mine fiasco...When you go around opening up pockets of empty space under the earths crust with the earth always in some type of motion ....what do these geniuses think is going to happen?
