Apple trees by cabin.

I have a few apple trees in the field in front of my house. Loaded with apples this year. The field is about 120 yds long from the cabin to the road and about 60-70 yards across. I never really thought of hunting it since its right out front but this weekend I had a nice 8 point there on Friday night around 5. 2 more bucks Sunday morning (4pt and spike). Then at 8am the same 8pt and another 8pt that looked bigger came out. I can put a blind out on the wood line. I'm always hauling stuff a mile up the mountain to hunt and they are coming out right in front of the house.

I know scent control is huge with whitetails. How is it that with people around, cars, wood burning, all this stuff they still come out into that field

I will be spending at least a few days sitting by the front window of our house with the rifle. Every year I come down off the hill and have to listen to, "Gee you should have been here this afternoon. A whole herd of deer came out and ate another shrub". Well, this year I am going into a defend-your-landscape mode and start knocking off a few of those shrub munching critters. Yeah, it hardly can be called hunting, but it probably is worth a day or two of the season just to start getting control of the local herd.

Funny you say this. My buddies mom gets her license every year, mostly to transfer DMP's now, but has shot a few in her day. One opening day we were in the garage skinning some deer when all of a sudden BANG! We almost cut off our fingers it scared us so badly. Mind you, she hadn't hunted or shot anything in several years so we didnt expect her to be shooting. Needless to say a doe tried to eat one of her precious bushes and she whacked her. Priceless...
