Looking for Squirrel Rifle

I am looking to buy a used squirrel gun. Trying to branch out both in terms of hunting and firearm ownership. Thanks.

How much are you looking to spend?

A basic .22 runs around $150 new. I guess $75ish for a well used rifle (without scope) would be fair but I'm open to suggestion.

Keep an eye on Dick's and other sporting goods stores. You can get a decent .22 for @ $100 brand new if you watch the sales.

The issue for me is in addition to the money I just don't want to deal with the ridiculous regulations one must follow when buying a rifle in NY and NJ.

I'm a Virginia resident and live on a military base so I don't need a NYC rifle permit and do not want to get a Firearm Purchaser ID Card or whatever.

So your not even eligible to buy a gun in NY then.

Looks like you'll have to take a drive to Virginia to get one.  You can have a rifle in NY, but you can't buy one in NY.

I'm not sure I follow.

As a military member stationed in NYS for many things I am treated as a legal resident of the state. I can get an New York DL if I wanted and I pay resident price for hunting licenses.

For military members from another state permanently stationed in VA one simply needs a copy of orders and a proof of address to be sold a firearm by dealer and not even that for private sales.

I'm not familiar with your situation here in NY.  I don't know how they handle military stationed here.  Call a local gun shop or your local PD and ask them how it's done.  I hope they let you buy a rifle at least.  That should be OK for you.  But I know you are not even allowed to possess a handgun in NY unless you are a resident.  I doubt that rule is waived for military, even though it should be,

Spoke to a dealer today.

I can buy a rifle as long as I present my Virginia Driver's License, Military ID, copy of my official orders.

So that settles it. I can legally purchase a rifle in the state of NY.

Now who wants to sell me one?

How about for a prior service member?
