josephmrtn
I own 3/4 of an acre. The farms i hunt i do not own. The total i have permission for is @ 900 acres. There have been years when opening day by me sounds like the first scene in Saving Private Ryan, complete with artillery, But in the last few it has been some what subdued. I'm surrounded by all private land,I guess less people are hunting or the cut back in does permits in 3H is the answer. I hear the standard bangs and booms and it seems like every year, you hear that shot that sounds like a frigging cannon, makes you think "what In the heck is he shootin over there" What's your average walk in ? 1 mile or more ?? depends on how far i drive and which stand it is... it can be anywhere from 1 mile to 100 yrds I cation those on ATV's to be safe, my cousin had an accident with his this week and broke a rib taking him out of commision for the opener. one of my cousins was killed a few years ago when a throttle malfunctioned and stuck wide open
F-150
When gun season opened on Monday years ago a buddy of mine and I would be up in our treestands listening to all the people sighting in their guns, I wondered if any deer got shot before opening of season. My brother said more ammo was used before season than during. Mayor Bloomberg would not want to come to Allegany County because we probably have more guns than people. I know in the past I would hear gunshots and it made me think of the movie the sound of music. The hills are alive with sound of music ( gunshots are redneck music ) Edited November 14, 2013 by F-
Uncle Nicky
Love the sound of opening day in the woods, whether it's PA or NY. For me it's the nostalgia & tradition. In the big woods up north, it's the all-day barrage of rifle fire, and the quads at the end of the day dragging deer out. Locally it's the buckshotters unloading their guns (are they aiming or just spraying?), and the deer drivers yelling "YOOOHHHH BUCKKKK!!!". Nothing else quite like it that I can think of. nys-buckstalker
I remember when I first started hunting (1982), opening day you could drive pass local diner at 4:30 in the morning and the place would be packed. The place ran a breakfast special and made ham ,egg ,and cheese sandwiches and filled thermos with coffee for $ 5.00 . We would get to my uncle's property around 5:30 am and walk in and be set up by 6:15 am. Never failed around 6:30 we would here the neighbors start driving up the hill to their stands and here doors slam shut. Wouldn't be 2 minutes later you would hear a shot or 2 fired from their direction. We just sit there and laugh inside and think "What the heck are they doing?" We would start hearing shots about 7 am and continue till about 10 am. Now today still drive pass that diner and its closed, but the neighbor still drives in around 6:30. Except now don't hear the a shot from them till around 10 or 11. Still shots being fired before legal shooting hours up and down the valley. Not as many as years ago but still a few. accman
Opening morning of rifle season starts on Friday by me as far as the deer are concerned ! Friday the camps fill up, then the shooting " sighting in " starts. That lasts most of the day, then when that gets boring the camps empty out, as everyone heads up the hill to check and make sure the rock or stump they sit on is still there, some need to look for a spot to sit cuz they have no clue where to go. It's all part of the tradition here. I will leave camp at 4:30 Friday morning and head up the mountain with my bow to hunt the edge of a thick bedding area loaded with rubs and scrapes. Hopefully I can sit all day and catch one of those critters getting the heck out of the low areas :-) Our camp policy is no firing the rifles after the sunday before the season starts. Gives us a week to get the woods quiet. All the guys head up to their stands the week before, drop off what they want, and not head back up till opening morning on saturday. We all try to get there early on Friday afternoon to do the important things like buy all the kegs, get all the food, and start cooking up the tenderloins. Somebody always has smoked turkey, venison pepperoni, chili, stews, and I bring up the peace-de-resistaanse, the italian antipasta from Aurthur Avenue and the homemade pasta fagioli. We dont shoot either. The camp next to us will start shooting around noon Friday, and that will go on until dark non stop, thats why I am trying to get things set up for bowhunting where I am pretty much alone. It's tradition for these guys though so I just go with the flow and get in the thickest crap I can on opening day So when is dinner served ?? I will be there :-)
Dnkydog
Last year was my first year. I heard a ton of shots at the first crack of light and then a few seconds later a flash of deer came whizzing past me. Couldn't even tell if they were does or bucks. Pretty exciting. There's no other day like opening day. Can't wait but for christs sake will it cool down some this weekend??!!!
